I think this was Richard Benjamin's directoral debut. Like other posters, I love this movie.
But I do pick out (no knock on anything about the movie) the pattern of a Sony Trinatron cathode ray tube in the final close-ups of a television screen.
Peter O'Toole's performance in Lord Jim made me go back to read the book again.
Wonderful movie and some very clever moments. As previously stated, it's a shame people don't give it the attention or credit it deserves. It got at least one or two Oscar nominations. Saw it a few years ago on a list, from Maxim or Stuff, of "50 greatest movies you haven't seen" or something like that.
I always relate Swann to the friend, that seemingly everyone has, that drops the ball so much...then they come through like a hero in a perfect moment like it was made for them.
One of my all time favorite movies. My favorite movie quote of all time is in this movie, but not here...check out the youtube video labeled "ladies only" ...it should be in Related Videos over on the right.
@divinsfun1 "Ladies only" LOL! My favorite scene is the one just before this one when Swann realizes he's going to be on live TV. He says something like, "Live? LIVE?" and then mentions his first play. " I was a butler (pause) I had one line (longer pause) I FORGOT IT!
I've watched this movie since I was 12 years old- it never fails to make me feel good- when I'm down, sick, or just plain bored- I pop this in- and life is suddenly better
Has anyone posted the scene where the show host, King Kaiser has the Mafia boss, in his office and mimics him, including tossing his hat out the window?
I'd love to see that scene posted here on YouTube.
That is the best scene in movie history. Cracks me & my mate up every time we see the producer shouting 'Stan' in increasingly urgent tones throughout the scene
This movie is a all-time fave of mine :) I remember when it came out (didn't see it in the theatre though) & seeing it on the Movie Channel the year after about 30 times! LOL! :D O'Toole was cool back then;is now & FOREVER will be :)
O'Toole's first wife wrote in her memoir PUBLIC PLACES that she'd never known anyone who could exasperate people and be forgiven so completely like Peter O'Toole. It reminded me of the last line in this scene, "As Alfie says, `With Swann you forgive a lot, you know?' I know."
A truly underrated movie. Saw this when it opened with my mom when I was 5. Didn't get it then. Took a few years before I realized how great a flick this is. And O'Toole was FUCKING GREAT in this film. Lawrence Of Arabia? The Lion In Winter? NO!!! This is his best and most memorable role to me. Thanks for the post.
I'd like to see the ladies room scene. You know, the one where Stella Diamond says, "this is for ladies only", to Swann, who turns and replies, "so is this, but right now I'm running a little water through it."
This movie was directed by Mel Brooks under a pseudoname. He wanted it to not be attached to his typical repitore. Pretty amazing, touching and comedic movie. I love this and all his films. Suprized?!!!
The DVD is like $5 on Amazon.... what an under-priced gem... Another favorite with Peter & Virginia Madsen from the 80's is "Creator" - more magic... Thanks for uploading this clip!
Absolutely recommend this film to you...funny and nostalgic, and a wonderful feel of the '50's about it. Great casting all 'round, well worth the cash.
Do you have any more clips from the movie? I might consider buying it if I could see a few more scenes. I'm a "Perfect Strangers" fan, especially of Mark Linn-Baker and Bronson Pinchot, and was interested in "My Favorite Year" ever since I discovered that was one of the films he got recognized for.
I actually ended up purchasing it last year! I uploaded the scene where Mark and O'Toole are on the roof with plans of "surprising" the party guests below them. Inflitrate them so to speak...:D It's one of the best scenes in the movie!
@Karen- Amazon has it

"My Favorite Year" is one of my most "favorite films ".
A great moment when Swan finds his "inner swashbuckler".
Also,1954,the year I was born is still,"MY favorite year".
Also,Mark Lynn-Baker was never better!

Yet another Academy Award that should have been. O'Toole has been so thoroughly robbed so many times. This was one of them.

Well that pseudonym was Actor Director Richard Benjamin who directed 19 other films.
It was Brooks' company that produced the film.
