The exhaust from the barrel type engine pod sort of sticks in a layer against the skin of the wing, and this enhances lift when the flaps are down. Sort of like the way water will stay against the back of a spoon if you hold it under the tap. Don't spare the titanium when constructing that part of the wing, incidentally.
The AN-72/74 is an undersized copy of the Boeing YC-14. The YC-14 was supposed to replace the c-130 back in the '70s. It had spectacular short-field performance because of the upper-surface-blown flaps. The Soviets did an excellent job with this plane.
