First off, the "fastest man in the world" title goes to the 100m WR holder. Not the 200. And though Bob Beamon held the wr til 1991, it wouldn't have been accurate to say in 1988 that he was the best long jumper. he had the furthest jump, but he was like 50 by then. His WR stood and no one had jumped further. That's like saying today Flojo is the fastest female runner in the world because 23 years ago she set the wr. She isn't. In fact, she's dead. It's only true that no woman has run faster.

that is true but i`m using the same logic that was used when mj was considered such based on the fastest top speed. if mj was rated using that system then it would only be fair to apply that to menea or else that system is just invalid be it for mj or any other 200 runner.
the reason for the question of MJ's title was because the record was broken by so much. Mennea's 19.72(a) didn't fall into that category. And the question was gonna be "settled" by having him race the current WR holder and olympic 100m gold medalist.. Mennea won't ever be considered in the same category as a MJ. He just won't. i go by the STATS and they say that altitude gives very little advantage if any at all in the sprints. the STATS is what counts. since ur soooo scientific pls provide the "scientific" data to substantiate ur claim?

Mennea`s time in the 1970's was way ahead of it`s era thus the 17 yrs unbroken. to this very day the only time run faster that his time at "altitude" at altitude is mj 19,71. the altitude was almost exactly the same and so was the wind. i does not matter what u say mennea was the fastest period!

Carl Lewis and Joe Deloach's 19.75, for instance, were far more impressive. Oh yeah not to mention Michael Marsh's 19.73.

First off, the "fastest man in the world" title goes to the 100m WR holder. Not the 200. And though Bob Beamon held the wr til 1991, it wouldn't have been accurate to say in 1988 that he was the best long jumper. he had the furthest jump, but he was like 50 by then. His WR stood and no one had jumped further. That's like saying today Flojo is the fastest female runner in the world because 23 years ago she set the wr. She isn't. In fact, she's dead. It's only true that no woman has run faster.

the reason for the question of MJ's title was because the record was broken by so much. Mennea's 19.72(a) didn't fall into that category. And the question was gonna be "settled" by having him race the current WR holder and olympic 100m gold medalist.. Mennea won't ever be considered in the same category as a MJ. He just won't. There were rumors of his unethical practices (cutting the lane line) and his prime was during a time where the field wasn't as stacked as it was during mj's time

Any run of 19.80 or below at sea level is far superior to Mennea's 19.72 at altitude. the record stood for as long as it did because of it's assist. Carl Lewis and Joe Deloach's 19.75, for instance, were far more impressive. Oh yeah not to mention Michael Marsh's 19.73.
