well .... it turns out that after repeated hearings of this gorgeous song, I too doubted that it was actually Dave singing. Went so far as to google the album on itunes and preview the song from a different source ... sounded a bit different. So I got out the headphones and had a good listen to this version again. Wow!!! highly recommend you try it yourself ... beautiful powerful experience. It is indeed Dave and he sings like an angel. Go ahead, Crank it!!
One of the top Kinks albums. From "Killin Tine" to "Sleazy Town" to "Video Shop" to "Working At The Factory" with "Rock And Roll Cities" putting the icing on the cake this is a great cross-section of Klassic Kinks stuff no holds barred. Not to mention the title track! Great post.
One of the best songs they EVER did, "80's production" or not. An absolute stunner on every level. Anyone who says otherwise is blinded by Kinks "I-Like-Their-60's-Stuff"-centricism.
KinkS were great in the 60's, 70's, 80's and in to the 90's right up until the end and they reamin the greatest band of all time. And their solo careers are going and Ray is still writing and playing the greatest songs of all time. God save The KinKs and Ray Davies!
You're probably more accustomed to hearing Ray sing lead on Kinks songs -- one of the reasons this song sound so different is because Dave's singing the lead on it. Dave's a lot more than simply one of the greatest lead guitarists in the history of rock -- he also has one of the most expressive voices EVER & his songwriting skills are stellar too. Why not check out some of his solo work? I think (and hope) that you'll love it.

@PlaceSoFarAway I agree with you. This is really beautiful Kinks - tune, sung by Dave Davies.
