The Glass Steagle Act prohibited Banks from underwriting speculative securities. Bank holding companies were allowed to do such underwriting under Section 20 Subsidiaries under strigent guidelines... the democrats removed the guidelines.

When the rates increased they could not afford the payments and defaulted. Understand? Can you put this all together now?

While private label securities owned 15% of MBS. Their delinquency rate was 51%. That is just counting 65% of MBS. In 2006, the GSE only backed 20% of all sub-prime mortgages, so that left 360 Billion in sub-prime mortgages. So it wasn't government, as you've mistakenly believe. But they were left holding the bag. Have a nice life

Now these mortgages were also used by banks to securitized their repo activities with other banks, e.g., borrowing money. You don't understand the play involved and recourse to the Govt gtee.

@Holyslayer2 That's actually not a bulletproof argument, I'm afraid. Ronald Reagan had a 42% approval rating (after being shot, no less!) in July 1983 before going on to the largest electoral college landslide in American history. I'm not saying that Obama will have the same result (much less deserve anything close to it), but the approval rating is not a true predictor of election day results. Plus, the Republican contenders are less viable than even lame Mondale was, which also helps Obama.

GNMA, FNMA and FHLB were never guaranteed by the Gov't until the democrats had the gov't guarantee their mortgages in the secondary markets without recourse. CRA is the catalyst of this. Then the democrats repealed the Glass Steagle Act. Do some research yourself before placing blame.

@Frostweld You read alot into something written that does not adhere to your liberal ideology. 1) The CRA forced banks under monetary penalty to write these mortagaes to unworthy borrowers. 2) These mortgages under Gov't gtee were rated AAA. The Glass Steagle Act prohibited Banks from underwriting speculative securities. Bank holding companies were allowed to do such underwriting under Section 20 Subsidiaries under strigent guidelines... the democrats removed the guidelines.

@illhavemine S&P WAS paid by the banks for the AAA rating, FACT. The fact that GSE's, Fannie and Freddie owned 50% of the mortgages in 2008. Their delinquency was 20%. While private label securities owned 15% of MBS. Their delinquency rate was 51%. That is just counting 65% of MBS. In 2006, the GSE only backed 20% of all sub-prime mortgages, so that left 360 Billion in sub-prime mortgages. So it wasn't government, as you've mistakenly believe. But they were left holding the bag. Have a nice life

Now these mortgages were also used by banks to securitized their repo activities with other banks, e.g., borrowing money. You don't understand the play involved and recourse to the Govt gtee.

@Holyslayer2 That's actually not a bulletproof argument, I'm afraid. Ronald Reagan had a 42% approval rating (after being shot, no less!) in July 1983 before going on to the largest electoral college landslide in American history. I'm not saying that Obama will have the same result (much less deserve anything close to it), but the approval rating is not a true predictor of election day results. Plus, the Republican contenders are less viable than even lame Mondale was, which also helps Obama.
