  • Incredible. I just happened by the closing credits to "The Town" on HBO today and heard this song playing. Glad I found it, great musician, I had never heard of Ray LaMontagne before this. Now I have to either go get an album of his music or download as an MP3.

  • @joevs21001 that's where i heard this for the first time

  • A modern version of Dan Fogelburg

  • Does he mean Spokane WA?

  • @yes Spokane ,with cocaine playin in my veins,I found myself face down in the ditch, with booze in my hair and blood on my lips,a picture of you holdin a picture of me,in a pocket in my blue jeans.Still dont know what love means ,still dont know what love means,Passed thru Spokane in a mud bogg music fest ,a pocket of shrooms ,and coke in my vest,40 years come to pass ,and Ray sing the rest....Jolene ,i aint about to go straight, too late ,and I still dont know what love means

  • @faaaaaaaaaaaaaag Kraken*

  • @kbond002 Hey buddy! Get over it.

  • @kbond002 It's artistic expression. Artists do it all the time to make things rhyme. You can still understand him when he says early.

  • EVERYBODY JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP AND STOP BEING EMOTIONAL......PLEAAASE ITS FUCKING CORNEY

  • It just makes me wanna cry, over and over.

  • gawd dammit Ray... you make me wanna

  • It's sad that you rarely see true passion and the pain behind the song expressed so evidently on the performers face and in his tone. Make's it so much more beautiful.

  • this man illustrates perfectly what it means to FEEL the music you play.

  • yup thats a good song , that makes you sadly happy

  • makes me think of the days that you just let go and time doesn't matter...

  • this man's voice is like a hundred rusty razor blades tugging at a weary heart

  • @neaks713 True that!

  • When i heard this song at the end of the town it really hit me.

  • no one on this planet has more emotion, feeling, and altogether humanity in this day and age than RAY CHARLES LAMONTAGNE. alot of his songs have become to studio/overdubbed/generally overdone for me, if you listen to record but damnit if he doesnt feel every word, every chord. every song to the depths of his bone. if i were worthy of giving advice to such a great man, i would say go back to your roots, leave the orchestra and the army of backing musicians behind and do more just you and guitar.

  • This song made me start playing acoustic again.

  • Great song!!

If you like this song you may like my songs? Check out my video response! Emily, When I am Free (demo version).

  • Ray, you are awesum!

  • I don't know what to say... just saw "The Town".

But even if I haven't saw this movie... just thinking of my own burrial... great song to be the last one played for myself.

  • The Town! It took a while for me to find this out :) It´s a beautiful song, perfect for the ending...

  • BIG thanks 2 my homegirl tonya.. 4 gettin me hip 2 this shiit right chere

  • THE TOWN!

  • His voice is a thing of beauty, but his guitar playing here has so much feeling and nuance. Forever thankful I have found Ray.

  • I don't know what to say about my heart.....except it has you in it.......and I don't know what to hope about yours....except the same thing......

  • sweet

  • @luis230111 same here :) great song.. just fit right in there

  • Comment removed

  • @luis230111 me too ! +1

  • this song is beautiful.. makes me think of how short this life is.... things never stay the same... ppl change... the world changes... will it ever go back to the way it was or is?

  • dude has an unreal voice

  • @phat989 hell yeah, dude can flex the Golden Pipes :)

  • i don't get it, i like his music and been to his concerts, but WHY IS THIS GUY SOOOO STUCK UP/ARROGANT?

  • @moamaori he definitely isn't stuck up or arrogant...if you've seen interviews with him he explains that he is very shy it is evident that he is a very private person. he delivers his music to the audience, which is what you want, isn't it? It's simply his style of performance. it really stinks that he comes across to you as such. shy people are grossly misunderstood.

  • @moamaori shyness is all to often taken for being stuck up or arrogant. As someone thats been shy for his whole life I get it.

  • @JimB667 Probably the truest comment I've ever read. My Girl still thinks im arrogant when im just not as open as most people.

  • nashville sucks

  • if you don't love Nashville TN you don't know not a thang bout country music

  • I like both versions. Ray's is his own... that's never a question. But just to clear up some misconceptions. Zac Brown was not and is not the typical Nashville Swill. He started in Georgia and had his own record label with a real fan base. It wasn't until later that Atlantic picked up one of their albums. He is still based in GA and has still refused to conform to Nashville. His music has been called similar to Texas country or Red Dirt music. Far from Nashville's low standards.

  • Come on people, let's stop hatin on ZBB. They did a very good cover of this song. Ray's version is also very good, it's the original and his voice is just raw and tugs on the heartstrings. Let's just kick back and listen to the tunes.

  • the town was really great, this song such great ending for movie:)

  • good song...zac brown sings it waaay better tho.

  • @SmokeyMcKronik ...if your idea of "waaay better" is boring, canned Nashville twang, then yes... but otherwise, no waaay...

  • @SmokeyMcKronik He most definitely doesn't...this Zac Brown dude has such a boring run of the mill voice. Ray LaMontagne's voice is like a rusty razor. It sounds like his voice has been weathered for a thousand years. It's magnificent.

  • @SmokeyMcKronik depends on your viewpoint personally i like zbb version better but i love this one two

  • this is amazing.

  • Awesome song. Just heard it on the credit line of "The Town". Go Boston. I miss home now!

  • @TheBelleJenelle heard it from the town too... great film nd this is a great song

  • how does a man with a beard like that have a voice like this. :D makes me smile.

  • just heard this song on the closing credits of the movie "The Town" and it bothered me that i couldnt think of what it was. Turns out i was thinking of ZBB's version. Came home to look it up and this version is by far my favorite. Full of emotion and slow beat. Very nice!

  • I'm happy ZBB covered this, because it's given Ray alot of exposure. But at the same time... to take a raw, emotionally charged song like this and over produce it... sucked all the feeling out of it. Shame, ZBB. Shame. Ray is the man.

  • Hey, Anyone know whats tunning is this? Full step down??

  • Hey Ray, if you ever got tired of that guitar just chuck it my way! :) Even your strumming is turning me on man!

  • Excellent music !

  • Everyone relax. Both versions are great.

  • @mdellasala very true

  • Zac Brown's version angers me

This song is slow and beautiful,

Zac Brown's version doesnt even flow.

Ray is untouchable, you cant fake the pain in his voice

  • This blew my mind a little bit. I'm part of the ignorant masses that's only ever heard Zac Brown do this song. Jolene is/was my favorite song off ZBB's album. But wow! This version is just beautiful!!!

  • Great version. Zac Brown's is great also. My favorite would have to be Jason Isbell's though. Cant go wrong with any of them

  • "I found myself face down in a ditch

    Booze in my hair

    Blood in my lips

A picture of you holding a picture of me

In the pocket of my blue jeans

Still don't know what love means"

my ex boyfriend once got really drunk and actually did wind up in a ditch at midnight. this song hits home for me.

  • @downthestreetteam I think my favorite lyric is "cocaine flame in my bloodstream"

  • this is better than the album version

  • i think i love zac brown bands version better. this one is amazing but i just like the pace and sound better from zac brown.

  • @benjistoll why should we care, we are here for the ray lamontagne.

  • @TheJuliusJT because your mother sucked my dick for money one time

  • @benjistoll FTW!! Well played.

  • @benjistoll I think I like the Zac Brown one better for the same reason, but you can feel more emotion from this version.

  • @vegasboy79 ray lamontagne does put more soul in it but zac brown makes it more country :)

  • i love this song, not just cause i have the name its amazining

  • this guy is probably one of the greatest songwriters of all-time

  • no one throws out heart like ray. nobody.

  • i fukin love this song....ray.....

  • This is music.

  • I thought God shaved his beard off, guess not.

  • Spent time as a kid in Spokane. When I fist heard this song thats what kept me listening. Thank god for the Spokane reference because that one line got me listening to Ray.

  • @ne14dirt The mention of Spokane is what drew me to this song. Now I cannot get enough of Jolene!!

  • Truly amazing artist and song. Euphoric.

  • awesome song... if u like rays style of singing you should check out Jesse Winter.. i like the song Shama-ling-dong-ding.... absolutly beautiful song

  • Does this have anything to do with the White Stripes song entitled "Jolene"?

  • no their version is a cover of dolly parton's song jolene

  • @fizzgigify no, the white stripes version is a cover of dolly parton's single. someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think this has any connection to dolly parton's single.

  • one of the best singers ever. SO underrated. this song is incredible.

  • This guy is one of the only musicians that plays with true emotion in this day. I would be ashamed to admit I enjoy some other musicians who are "emotional" because it is feminine. I think Ray can pull it off as a man would truly sing, from the soul - pure and awesome.

  • Heard his studio stuff before and kinda felt it was cool but formula...listening to him sans production...whole 'nother world..really good!!!!

  • just want to eat this guy with a spoon

    or shovel

    love it love it loveit

  • Ray's best song. Been listening to him for about 5 years now. Love this song, and it's not just because I live close to Spokane

  • a man needs something he can hold on to a 9 punds hammer or a woman like you either one of them will do :)

  • thats pretty awesome

  • I agree with steelpowerhouse... beautiful illustration. Really sets up the character.

    God I love this song.

  • Best opening lyrics of a song, ever. Really paints a picture...

  • ive never been a fan of his more upbeat stuff. but jesus, when he goes to the lower sadder stuff hes a genius. i cant stop listening to this, empty, or burn. jolene definitely takes it for me though.

  • I just saw him live in Philadelphia and he explained that he made some changes to his single "you are the best thing", to make it a better sounding record. He kind of of hinted at him not wanting to do it, but he was so soft spoken it was hard to make out exactly what he was saying. Anyway he played the song "you are the best thing" the way he said he originally intended to record it, and it was just low strum palm mute acoustic (much like burn), without the brass and full band.

  • i think hes gotta better grip on music when its just him and a guitar. he doesnt need the clutter of other instruments to make his music unique.

  • Yes. Totally.

  • Telefunken!

  • haha! :)

  • hes amazing!

  • he doesn't sound like a walrus.

i think this song its incredible

  • He is amazing. I seriously can't stop listening to him. This song and his voice are so so real. Absolutely awesome.

  • OH Ray oh Ray! How I love your music. Your melodies make me swoon and your voice... Oh that voice... makes me weak in the knees.

  • HAHAHAhAH

  • Been killing many walruses lately?

  • God, that's so mean! But funny, haha

  • Just amazing, breathtaking, addicting, comforting, etc. I'm so thankful that he was put here to affect us all with his music. Can't wait to see him in early July . . .

  • breathtakingly beautiful. this song gives me chills i love it so very much.

  • <3 Completely amazing x Cant wait for September when i get to see him live ! <3

  • A picture of you holding a picture of me in the pocket of my blue jeans. Not only is this song a meloidic masterpiece his voice is just intoxicating. An absolute joy everytime I hear it.

  • someone must have really snapped his heart in two for him to sing like that. beautiful, but incredibly sad.

  • "A man needs something he can hold onto, a nine pound hammer or a woman like you"

    love it.

  • dylan with a voice...

  • Its amazing musical talent like this that keeps the spirit alive. This song drives me to tears every time I hear it. I love Ray for sharing it with us,

  • I love ray lamontagne, and this is my all time favorite song by him.

  • goosebumps

  • Holy Goosebumps.

  • AMAZING! ..."...a picture of you holding a picture of me in the pocket of my blue jeans..." amazing.

  • Deep.

  • Brilliant acoustics lead to an open road

  • this guy is so friken amazing!!!!

  • he could sing ANYTHING and make it sound amazingg.

    xx

  • I heard once,

"Men want to be him, women want to be on him."

    haha

  • I have heard Ray do this song so many times and this is my favorite version, just amazing.

  • he can't be real, he's like a warrior prophet, his words are his swords, his voice is his love

  • are you takin the piss mate. go on make up an even more contrived summation of this i dare ya.

  • he is like an albino kangaroo, his pouch holds his music. and his whiteness shows his purity. suck it :P

  • ya were takin the piss. Thats actually fairly funny. well done!

  • Ray LaMontagne is the new Dylan, an unrivaled modern poet.
