I wonder if they're going to do anything about the film's twentieth anniversary next year, when I saw this movie I was little and ever since I have loved it to death, from the segregation of the peas from the meatloaf, all the way through to the battle scene near the end. I know a lot of you hate this movie, but for those few of us who truly understand it's meaning it will forever stand alone as a testament that joy and innocence will prevail now I'm off to my emo corner to weep for the future

I remember seeing the trailer and wondering what kind of movie this was, but I heard the critics saying it was awful. So I didn't see it till years later, and I thought, holy shit, this movie is awesome! I wish I saw it in the theater. Let that be a lesson -- never listen to critics.

Okay I have a question. Is this the trailer that is spoofed in the Simpsons episode "Burn's Heir?" In the episode, Mr. Burns is advertising that he wants an heir to his fortune. He is in a grassy field like this alone. The DVD commentary said it was based on Toys but said it was a strange and unique trailer. I just want to know was this the trailer that was "strange and unique?"

Yes it was. It is strange and Unique because Robin Williams is talking straight at the camera (or breaking the fourth wall) to tell people to see the movie. Can you think of any other movie trailer that does that?

@kbry118 I know it's been a year, but the answer is no, this isn't the exact one. The original one is on YouTube called "Toys vhs trailer". This trailer is sort of a remix of that one. The original is def one of the most original trailers I've seen for a movie.

@kbry118 This is a trailer for the video release. When it was in the cinema, they probably ran a whole teaser which had nothing except Robin Williams in a field riffing on the title. I believe The Simpsons writers said the film itself was a bit strange, and the trailer was a bit crap as it didn't really explain what the film was about at all.

Actually technically that's even too short. I remember the original cinema trailer being even longer again, they tend to have longer ones for cinema.

This was an allegory for the battle between childhood and perceived adulthood. I don't believe it ever was a children's movie. I know it gets more intense as I get older, but it remains one of my favorites - childhood wins! (Sorry if that spoils the suspense)

It was a dream project for Barry Levinson--was to be his first film. Even as a kid I thought the overall story (in concept) and ideas were great but something just made it agonizing to watch. Now that I'm older I think the story was executed in an awful, obnoxious way but it seems like it was originally supposed to be a whimsical Rene Magritte inspired film and got ruined in preproduction. I loved the "Mirror Song" scene though.
