  • thanks for posting this

  • The song sung by the choir is entitled "Come, Ye Sons of Art" by Henry Purcell

  • When did they tear it out?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!

  • Thank you for posting this...when I was little my Grandpa would take me to the Cinedome all the time (he spoiled me, haha), and I would always love seeing this. Memories of this bring back memories of being there with my Grandpa...When I miss him, maybe now I can look back at this and not feel so sad, because we shared that time together.

  • I so agree with "vekoma." I miss the CineDome!!!! There was nothing else like it and the usual Imax cannot even compare with it. I hate that stupid dinosphere thing. This film just brings back so many great memories of the old style Children's Museum and all the great things about Indiana. Definite lump in the throat feeling. Thank you for posting this!!

  • Oh old Indianapolis. I miss that part of my life.

  • I'm so glad I found this. I haven't seen it for over ten years, but it always gave me chills back then -- and I just felt the same thing as I watched it today! Beautiful, touching, funny, and exciting. Just like Indiana.

  • Finally:

    10. Bystander in red shirt sits to the right of the State Fair backdrop for several scenes, always staring into the camera.

    11. Supposedly they gave away the balloons in the final carousel scene so they'd be moving faster. One is also released from behind the carousel.

    12. The producers had to make arrangements with many downtown buildings to leave the lights on at night to make the final scene more interesting. (See the credits.)

  • Continued:

    8. The IndyCar scene couldn't be filmed on a real car as they couldn't drive slow enough to ensure the camera's safety. So they filmed on a truck at half speed. When played back at normal rate, it looks fast. (A plane shoots the the sky super fast, though you can't see it here.)

    9. Barnstorming was done in a helicopter, not a plane, despite sound effects.

  • Continued:

    3. The sounds in the helicopter & race scene are dubbed - not what you'd hear if you were really there.

    4. As the balloon covers the sun, the family's waving.

    5. The sound in the water clock scene matches the 1 PM draining of the hour balls.

    6. Indianapolis Children's Choir is singing in the Indiana State Capitol.

    7. Basketball scene filmed in the Athenaeum gym.

  • @downeymj #6. I'm in that scene.

  • I worked at the CineDome for several years and also have a cameo in this film. I've still got a high-quality S-VHS tape of this, and it was also sold for several years in the museum store on VHS.

A few random facts/rumors about this film:

    1. The butterfly at jumped because it was being held by a museum staffer in the summer butterfly garden exhibit during filming. She shook it to get the butterfly to take flight on command.

    2. Most of the balloon scenes were filmed backwards for alignment.

  • @downeymj is there some way I can get a copy?

  • this video means so much to me. thank you kkiilljjooy for making me feel like a kid again.

  • CineDome was one of the best places Indianapolis had. Bummer they tore it down!

  • The CineDome was one of the best things that Indianapolis had. Took my children and family members to it all the time. Haven't been to the Museum since they tore it down. Video brings back nice memories.

  • Wow Market Square Arena. I remember those days going with my dad to see Reggie and Rik and the Davis boys. Man i miss the glory days of the Pacers. Boom Baby!!!!

  • we used to drive to indy to go to the children's museum.

oh god, this gave me chills all over. i wish they still showed this. it's been years since i've seen it but i remember it really well.

it's weird the things that stick with you.

  • Does anybody know where you can get the DVD? Is it only available at the Children's Museum or what? Cause I really want to buy it but I can't find it online :( Help?!

  • I was told about a month ago that it was going to be released on Feb 5th in the Museum Store. So far no dice. Liars.

  • i cant even express in words how much it means to be able to watch this again. i remember going to the CineDome all the time as a kid. i miss it so much. i wish they never tore it out for that stupid dinosphere. the CineDome will always be superior to the IMAX they built downtown. it really made you feel like you were "in" the movie. i still remember the light/speaker show before the film started. so cool. and this just tops the cake. thank you so much. I wish so much theyd bring it back!:(

  • @vekoma I know exactly what you mean. My family had a membership at the Children's Museum for over 8 years until my sister and I outgrew it. We went and saw a few shows that included this. When I watched it today I literally got chills in my spine just because it brought back memories.

If anyone has a video of that Light/Speaker show that they also shows, I would love to see it as that always had me amazed!

  • @schnabelz0045 No video exists of the sound and light show. Because the screen was made of perforated aluminum, when lights went on behind it, you could see the speakers themselves. The audio narrative was done by Bob Eubanks of TV game show fame. I never knew it to exist on anything but digital solid-state media for the theatre, so it's possible that there's a copy of it around somewhere. Hard to say.

  • @vekoma

i agree. my dad & i went to it when he was still alive when i was a 8 or 9. i'm 20 now.

  • I think they need to do an updated one for the IMAX.

  • Remember when people would care about, without cynicism, the place where they lived?

  • @cmc10101 I miss those days.

  • proud to be a Hoosier

  • childhood memories!

  • Wow - I can't believe you found this. I've been looking for information about this movie for years now. I'm not even a native Hoosier, but the one time I saw this at the Childrens Museum I'll have to admit I got that lump in my throat too. It made me proud of my adopted hometown. This has to be on DVD somewhere, right?

  • It'll be on DVD by feb 5 2010

  • Thank you so much for this posting. I grew up in Indy and love it and remember visiting the CineDome and tearing up with pride seeing this video. I now live in Ireland with my husband and feel delighted to have this bit of home available to me. It's so very appropriately and sensitively done. Thank you again.

  • i dont want to tell anyone how many times ive seen this because it might be extremely embarassing. this takes me back

  • you know the music from the ending credits. It's always been stuck in my head since the first time I witnessed the greatness of the Cinedome.

  • @saqer1 I don't know the title, but I know who sang it.

It was The Indianapolis Children's Choir and I think (don't quote me on it) The Indy Symphonic Choir.

  • I work at the museum, and of all the items that people miss, it's the Cinedome, and I gotta say that this was my favorite part too.

  • I used to work at the children's museum, I remember on break after lunch I'd still have enough time to go see a cinedome flick. So I would..... It was great way to finish out the morning!

  • Does anybody know if this is available on DVD or if I could download a higher quality version from anyplace?

  • I know... I want one too... anyone?

  • Thank you so much for posting this video. I actually have this on an old VHS tape. My family and I used to go to the Cinedome movies just to see this. It brings back a lot of good memories and it really tell the world what Indiana and Hoosiers are all about.

  • It brings back so many memories for me...the nostalgia part you mention is so true. I am a Hoosier and when I get out of Indiana someday this video will make me proud to have been raised in such a wonderful city as Indianapolis and a wonderful state as Indiana.

  • I remember loving this video sooo much!

  • i remember seeing that film in the cinedome theater in the childrens museum because i remember my group leader that took us to see it got very sick the next day.
