    last for ever. Iris

  • 90 years old,she was stunning,my nan tells me she was my grandfathers secret fantasy lol,I can't say I blame him,she was gorgeous, with a voice to match :-)

  • Beautiful video, thank you for uploaded. Share their judgments about this, extensible to other companies or individuals who impede the free diffusion of videos costructivos that, besides not commercial.

  • Wonderful lady, singing a wonderful song. I totally agree.

  • This is one of many videos I have uploaded that has been subjected to a phony copyright claim by "Orchard Music". This is a public domain recording. Please do not click on any links below the video. This criminal conduct by Orchard Music should not be rewarded.

  • What a lovely rendition, a beautiful lady singing a beautiful song.

  • We are SO lucky to be able to hear a wonderful singer , and a lovely lady. Makes you appreciate quality.

  • We are blessed that u tube gives ordinary mortals the chance to hear and see singerswith such quality and beauty----do you believe in Angels.??

  • Deanna's voice is like I imagine an angel's voice mus be. I've never heard such a beautiful voice,

  • anyone who is not moved by her rendition of this immortal song must be made of stone.

  • I hear she's living in France, not far from Paris. --The best voice in the history of movies.

  • @gallantrycross

She is still till today the best of them all who was the best singer+the best actress+the best expressive beauty, ALL at the same time at top.

  • @gallantrycross

When I hear a song of her,or watch one of her movies,or look at her very expressive beauty I really feel so so so sad because I didn`t live her golden era of real arts.

  • s c h ö n !! (wonderful version)

  • beautiful

  • Will last as long as this old world of ours and is just as lovely.

  • my heart hears the song, my heart feels the song, my heart can see the song...what more can my heart ask for but only to whisper to say "thank you Miss Deanna, you are still wonderful." May God always bless You and your Family.

  • NICE!

  • Film "Because of him", 1949. Deanna Durbin was always one of my fovorites. Her voice at a very young age, would surpasse a lot of singers. But It seems like she faded quickly from the screen? But I always love her voice. Thank you for sharing this.

  • @DIANNEELEE she apparently chose to "fade" from the screen

  • It's Captain Bly-

She sings to Captain Bly- as ever.

  • @harponercam Yes, it's Charles Laughton. One of the greats.

  • like the statesmen of our past beauty and Grace has all but fled from the bussom of our nation , Edna May moved to France to live , I did read a book that voices a remedy , the book is called , Man Greed and the economy , I like the way he writes so much I;m trying to write like him

  • absolutly breathtaking !!!

  • That's heartbreaking. I'm so stupid I never knew Deanna Durbin sang that well. Then again she was a bit before even my time and I'm old. Thanx for posting.

  • Deanna is absolutely gorgeous

  • Who's the giuy at the door? What film is this from?seen that guy in lots of old films

  • @harleyrrab Charles Laughton

  • @harleyrrab I think he is charles laughton...

  • a very beautiful rendition.

  • Amazing. The people {Only 6.. and counting..} aren't listening to the beauty of a sad, sorrowful, but beautiful song.. sung by the amazing Deanna Durbin.

  • Never heard such a poignant rendering of Danny Boy . D.D. has such an expressive and melodious voice.

  • Everything a movie should be-

    be there,yes, yet underscored.

  • Lovely

  • Deanna Durbin's version of Danny Boy is so incredibly beautiful that it reaches down into my soul. What a fantastic voice! She captures the melancholy mood of the song so well--simply angelic!!

  • @WJC4023151 . YOu are soooo right. She was/is an angel sent from God. Incredible voice, stunning beauty, great acting.

  • Brilliant...absolutly georgus

  • Brilliant is a word that comes to mind, Just Brilliant

  • I cannot get enough of her singing this song. Note perfect, effortless, perfect countenance. Heaven will be even more wonderful when she finally gets there.

  • I'm 82 years old and I still have my Deanna Durbin doll that my brother Adrian won for me when I was about 10 and he was about 13 by selling magazines. Thank you. ~OneKewpie~

  • Look at her... she was a CHILD!!! Just a sweet, beautiful child blessed with the voice of an angel... that is the BEST rendition of Danny Boy I have ever heard... what a treat! Thank you, Uploader!

  • When I was in college, there were a lot of girls named Deanna. Now I can see why the name caught on.

  • I have a feeling hearing Deanna sing this in person would have been breathtaking. I can only imagine. She was so wise to get out of the rat hole before it did to her what it did to her contemporary Judy Garland.

  • know one can sing this like deanna the voice of an angel sang with true heart and feeling thats why it moves you to tears , she has an amazing control in her voice that seems to come with ease, jackie evancho has it to , it cant be taught , its a gift from the angels . is anyone out there still amazed at how such a big voice comes out of such a little person. tina

  • my god! beautiful!

  • Here is an instance where in Deanna Durbin beats Judy Garland, hands down. Compare Judy's version of Danny Boy and you'll have to agree. This ballad must be sung with purity of heart rather than a heart on fire. Congratulations Miss. Durbin, you made me cry.

    Sincerely,

    Friend of Dorothy's

  • Wow!!!

  • She is better than Jackie electrodud.

  • 6 people are weird.

  • Yes! A very nice version! I had heard the name of Deanna Durbin, but I never heard her sing!!...The last verse, you don't always hear it sung--it's quite sad:" If I am dead, you'll come and find the place where I am lying...And I shall hear how soft you tread above me" etc. She does a nice job of Stephen Foster's "Old Folks At home" (see YouTube).

  • OMG! Magnificent voice, beautiful woman. Angels do exist on earth!

  • What a beautiful woman, both visually and vocally. Bravo, and peace Ms. Durbin.

  • A very beautiful melody sang by a gifted beautiful lady. N.Sablay. M.D. ( ret )North Las Vegas, Nv.

  • I used to watch all Deanna Durbin films - Sunday matinees! She has the most beautiful voice - thank you so much for posting this here. Makes me want to go and buy a CD of her songs.

  • Beautiful...almost brought me to tears :')

  • what a wonderful version & voice; only recently discovered Deanna Durbin on a CD I purchased were she sings beneath the lights of home; hope to listen to more of here songs and have added her to my favourites

  • Wonderful Version ! Love it ! One of the best I've heard ! She sings it beautifully ! Great Video ! Thank you so much for uploading ! 5*****+

  • It brings back my childhood memories when we only had the philco upright radio.

  • thank you to the people that have made this possible to hear and see this wonderful song, may I go to my grave with this song as they wheel or carry me out the door.

    aum shanti

    Maureen

  • Thanks, Violinthief, for posting the Deanna Durbin videos. They are very beautiful and very much appreciated. She was a wonderful singer.

  • BEAUTIFUL! what more can you say?

  • Lovely voice she had... It's such a beautiful and sad irish song <3

  • The names of the city and county of Derry or Londonderry in Northern Ireland are the subject of a naming dispute between nationalists and unionists. Generally, although not always, one will find nationalists calling them Derry, and unionists referring to them as Londonderry. Legally, the city and county are called "Londonderry", while the local government district is called "Derry". The debate became particularly politicised at the outset of the Troubles

  • Such a good example of all the beauty the world has to offer. Thanks for posting.

  • English wrote it, Irish sing it. God save the commonwealth of nations.

  • The interesting thing on this, is that the guy who composed "Oh Danny Boy" never setfoot in Ireland!!!!

  • @raoulsteiner Stephen C. Foster never set foot in Florida, but that did not stop him from writing Swannee River, which is Florida's state song. Deanna Durbin performs it well too.

  • @raoulsteiner

Cool, That's right up there with the word "Democracy" is never mentioned anywhere in the US founding documents. haha Sounds like a good tagline for the old Rest of the Story bits the late Paul Harvey used to do.

  • During their occupation of Ireland, the British tacked London onto County Derry, making it Londonderry. Let's just put that aside and call the tune what it is, the beloved Irish song "Danny Boy."

  • @bilmar1966 Well they added the name to the city in recognition of the London guilds that helped found it, not because they were "tacking on Britishness" to it (in fact, the city would be little more than a monastery if they hadn't done so). The county was never known as "County Derry", since before being changed to "Londonderry" in 1613 it was known as "County Coleraine". (Though I personally refer to the city as Derry 'cause it's shorter.)

  • I love this reminds me of me ma and me bro no capitals cos they belonged to me xxxx

  • Still charming but something happened when she grew up, or this is a very strange look she's sporting. Still, beautiful singing and very touching. Must find this movie, very intriguing.

  • @walnutgodwin Mostly what happened is that her studio put her up against Judy Garland. I guess there was only room for one young diva in the big films. She became increasingly irritated with the roles she was given and quit the business in 1949. In the late thirties, she was a big name. She's still alive, I think, about 89, lives in France.

  • @barkingspider403 I loved her statement that she "couldn't go on being little Miss Fixit and bursting into song. :) Wish she could have gotten some roles like Kathryn Grayson did as she had (and may have) as good a voice as her. She and Judy Garland were really different singer types.

  • @walnutgodwin I think it is acting. The movie is kind of strange. She has a dalliance with Charles Laughton because she has been using him to further her career. The ending is interesting. "Because of Him" is the name of the movie and TCM has it in its latest DD collection.

  • I thought it was from a movie "It Started with Eve"

  • @raisingAJ You are right about this. Very boring movie, I think, but this part of it was the one redeeming part for me. I just don't care for Franchot Tone at all, and never saw Charles Laughton as anything but the actor he played in this.....not as a love interest in the story.

  • @antinotis I doubt I'm wrong, but Durbin's on my list-- a short list-- of Hollywood actors and actresses who made it purely on talent. Aside from the off-the-wall visual of it, a "dalliance" between Deanna and Mr. Laughton is pretty silly. For one thing, he was, as the kids would say, so not into that.

  • Oh my goodness . . . sooooo beautiful.

GOD Bless that girl and the Irish.

  • man is she good at her vibrato!!!

  • Londonderry? You may as well call Zimbabwe Rhodesia!

  • Simply beautiful!

  • Wow - what a voice and wonderful interp! To my regret I first heard of Deanna today Nov 17, 2010. I'm sure I've heard her on film before but as a child didn't pay that much attention. This is the type of singing I love to hear.

  • I have heard many versions of this, but never have I heard such perfection that brings tears to my eyes. Thank you for posting. I am taken back to my childhood when my great grandmother would sing this to me as we would swing in her back yard.

  • Derry is a county in Ireland I believe and Londonderry is a town. :)

  • I bet Frederick Weatherly would never have believed how much of an Irish song this has become :)

My dads all time favorite song, he sings it 'almost' as good :)

  • Talented born singer and actress!

the only actress when young, to win "The Academy Juvenile Award".

  • Lovely and such a classic beauty. May you find peace Deanna as you seem unhappy. Hope you find it in your solitude in Paris.

  • Bravo and again bravo! What an incredible voice and what a beauty! It's not fair... all of that talent and beauty in just one person. Truly appreciated in Oxford, FL on this fine October morn.

October 16, 2010. Blessings to all.

  • I fall to pieces when I hear this part of the song......."And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me".......so beautiful, so sad.

  • The best performance of this beautiful song ever.....Deanna you just own it. Happy 88th year.

  • Does anyone know which film this is from? Ah, Charles Laughton- I think he did two films with her. Yes, as a Voice teacher and Opera singer, I'll say Durbin was phenomenal for the era in which she lived. Her one 'operatic duet' w/ Metropolitan Tenor Jan Peerce (when she was maybe 20?) clearly showed that she could have held her own with ANYONE. She has some vocal quirks, but they are what endear her voice to me; & She could make the audience melt, because she was so 'real.' Thanks for posting.

  • @jsmoir1 she did a film with Laughton called all about eve but this is not from that

  • @jhunted7667 Deanna was not in "all about eve", she was in "it started with eve". you must be thinking of Anne Baxter. Laughton was in "it started with eve".

  • @jsmoir1 The film is Because of him. One of her best.

  • I am too too splendid, and there are not words!

  • I know I'm going to sound like a sour old man, but this was from the days when a singer of popular light music was actually expected to have a decent set of pipes. Durbin could have sung opera.

  • @puffin02 I agree with you. The quality of singing has declined remarkably in recent years. I never knew anything about Deanna Durbin until recently, and I learned about her on You Tube.

  • @puffin02 She has sung Opera!

  • she has a perty voice ;D

  • Must be on e of the best interpretations .

  • amazing high notes.

  • What a Beautiful voice and BEST Danny Boy I have heard.

Too bad we haven't heard from her in over 50 years.

Hollywood is a scary and RAT infested place. I don't blame her for weanting to get away from it.

As I have been saying all day she was the Jackie Evancho of her time. Maybe even better.

I hope Hollywood doesn't corrupt Jackie Evancho once they get their claws in her

Does anyone know what was the youngest age she started to record?

God Bless you Deanna Durbin - hope you live FOREVER :-)

  • @electrodud She was 14 when she played her first movie(short) with Judy Garland. She lives in Paris and will respond to her fans but not the press. MGM could only use 1 of the 2. Producer said get rid of the fat one. It was misheard and they retained the fat one , which was Judy. Deann's Durbin's style in still used as a model for singing coaches even today. She was truly an amazing talent.

  • @hajune while the fact about starring in a short with garland is true, the way that they decided who was signed and who wasn't is false. after long consideration, MGM actually just chose garland.

  • @hajune and MGM fed Judy those pills and destroyed her. Her later singing was nothing compared to what she could do at first. Judy became a great showman though. Deanna Durbin's singing matured and got even better and then got married and say adios. One has to conclude Deanna was lucky one, but we missed out, no doubt.

  • @electrodud HOOOOLD UP. Jackie Evancho is about 12? Deanna Durbin is in a league of her own.

  • @electrodud she will

  • @electrodud I echo your sentiments about Evancho! She is a dear, sweet and pure child who possesses a lot of talent!!! But, as an opera singer in training, her training and technique is horrible!!! Her tone is completely swallowed and she uses jaw vibrato to create the mature sound in her voice and the vibrato that she doesn't naturally have! This poor child and her family have been either taken advantage of by a voice teacher with dollar signs in her eyes or one that is completely ignorant.

  • @flowersings I agree with you completely about Evancho. I'm surprised more people don't notice the harm that is being done from her bad training. As far as I have read, all she has is a famous (and rich) vocal coach who prepares her for snazzy performances. She seems to have no real voice teacher who can work on healthy technique. I hope she finds one who will help guide her talent safely so she can sing for her whole life. Deanna Durbin had a voice teacher beginning at age 10, apparently.

  • @DivetteDoryKamen You made a statement that harm IS being done to Jackie from bad training. Feel free to back it up.... what harm is being done? FYI she IS being coached only to assure that she is NOT using technique that will hurt her voice. She will have a full time coach only after she reaches puberty. BTW, she will not have any problems finding that coach... as even Renee Fleming has shown interest in working with her to some degree.

  • @flowersings Jackie Evancho is not "an opera singer in training". She is a Classical Crossover singer.

  • @rational2 indeed. I would be very surprised if she wound up being an opera singer.

  • @flowersings I am so glad you made this comment. I made a comment saying pretty much the same thing and was shouted down. There is a trend at the moment to make all opera and classical singers sound the same with a very fake unnatural "posh" sound that is completely swallowed with excessive jaw vibrato creating a "pretend" sound. It is ugly and unnecessary.

  • @flowersings Jaw vibrato does not create an adult sound.

  • @electrodud I feel like you do. I've only recently listened to Deanna's recordings...and...WOW! After listening to most of the greats of the past...and present, I've found her to be the most spectacular.

I've also, like many, become a fan of Jackie's. I'm 64 years old, have been a singer since I was in the chior at church at 7. As objective as I can be, I'll say, Jackie still has to grow a more physically, her special musical ability is there. Wait a couple more years. And watch out.

  • Never been done better!

  • beautiful voice.

  • I wish she had a version where she sang all the verses because this is truly beautiful!

  • I'm in love again!!

  • one of my very favorite versions of this song it is stunning, only Judith Durham's version even comes close, thanks for this beautiful voice

  • What year is this footage from?

  • @hev936 It's from "Because of Him" from 1946.

  • it's the Derry Air not londonderry!

  • Deanna is my favorite singer of them all.

  • Man, I love this song and have heard it a million times. I never cry... but looking at the lyrics almost made me cry... Weird that he's never been to Ireland... haha

  • After fighting with my computer for hours to get Adobe Player to upload, I think I've got

it right, click on Deanna's lovely face and viola!

Wherever she's living now in Europe, I hope she knows how her fans love her. To say nothing of my squeal of relief at getting to HEAR her through my new speakers!

  • She's beautiful, just like her voice.

  • Deanna Durbin's ,"Danny Boy" I enjoy very much.

  • One of the best versions i have heard. thank you.

  • Thank you Ms. Deanna Durbin. I like your Danny Boy the best.

  • @heihachiable I must say, I never really liked this song in the past, but I just saw this video and she really executed it beautifully. I have a new found respect for this song...I suppose it's never too late to appreciate something of value.

P.s. did you notice how much she looks like Sarah Brightman towards 1.59?

  • This, a perfect version of the melody written my Ruiari Dall Ó Cathain; Aisling an Óg Fhír (sorry my Gaeilge is rusty); nach dtuigeann tú, tá an ceol seo, go h-an mhaith. More than that.... perfect

  • Гениальная актриса и певица! Мой папа во второй половине 40-х все время держал ее фотографию, как самой очаровательной киноактрисы!

  • she reminds me of a relative who thinks they sing better then they do.Nothing special about her voice

  • "Derry Air" made me laugh out loud.

  • Having done an informal survey of about 10 other versions, this one still stands as my favorite. Deanna remains a gem buried in the rough of our history.

  • Deanna Durbin in this film does the finest version of this finest of songs in the English language! This is Aryan song at its best.

  • amazing

  • She has such a fantastic voice!

  • no one does it better

  • What a voice!

    Thanks for sharing.

  • Beautiful! This one's for you dad.x

  • is this from a movie?

  • Yes, the name of the movie was " Because of Him" in 1946. Great movie as well.

  • What does the meaning of the lyrics? Danny boys are the soldiers???

  • the song is about a lost love

  • Angels must sound like this.

  • My dear husband, Tom, loved to sing the old Irish songs. This brings back memories.

  • I miss my mum as well. Love you mum from Danny Boy and Louise xx

  • Thank you for this wonderful rendition of Danny Boy! Happy St. Patrick's Day Deanna wherever you are!

  • wonderful version of this beautiful song.

    missyou mam!!!! xxxx

  • yep Londonderry

  • Are we related? I am Nancy Crane.

  • yeah well the people actually live the call it derry and not L.derry.

And if the people who live there call it derry i dont see what the overrated has beens and their buddies can do about it.

  • this song always makes me cry!

  • So much Irish music makes me cry.

  • I'm sorry to sound petty but its derry not londonderry...just for future reference.

  • @macker33 Yes, you are being petty as well as incorrect - the theme is the "Londonderry Air". It was given this title by George Petrie in 1855 for Jane Ross of Londonderry, who wrote down the tune after hearing a fiddler playing it. "Derry air" would be your backside.

  • Yeah well, theres no such place as londonderry.

    32

  • @violinthief Derry is the name the Irish Catholics use for the city. They resent the British name of Londonderry. I agree with you, Macker33, the name of the song is "Londonderry Air."

  • @violinthief: That was a dam great response if I may say so. I hope "macker33" take note of it for future reference (lol).

  • @violinthief ouch

  • @violinthief Well, you know how it is with the Irish. Left to their own devices, they wouldn't even speak English.

  • @violinthief but an Englishman wrote it.

  • @violinthief the irish hate it being called londonderry...as the word london was added to it by the english when they conquered Eire

  • @3tangle3 Uhm. It was a englishman who wrote it..

  • @macker33 You republicans need to know you were beaten and it's Londonderry

  • @macker33 bravo...x

  • @macker33 you are right macka - it is Derry - Londonderry is just the english (but incorrect) name for the town

  • @macker33 I love your reply to what what said about " Derry Air" !

    You go macker33!!

  • @macker33 DERRY

  • her voice is angelic

  • Wasn't this also the theme from the Danny Thomas show "Make Room for Daddy?" It was a sitcom in the 1950's.

  • @Starlifter88 No , sorry , it was not ... but , Danny Thomas was a fav of my Mom's .. she still supports St.Judes Hospital for Children .. He was a wonderful Humanitarian !!

    All the Best :))

  • We Japanese love this song. Thanks so much.

  • @salmonidae2009 Does it have some sort of special significance to the Japanese?

  • RIP poppy :'( _---- played at his funeral

  • @kgrl829 Bless his heart Darlin
