@lifesart1 McDonalds is an extension of culture, ignoramus. Not just anything that feels artsy, but anything that constitutes a culture - is cultural. Coin toilets were a cultural thing. Feminism. Slutty teenagers. None of that has to do with music, but it's all part of North American Culture. Some facets of culture are more respectable, some are less. America's tendancy to invade weak countries is part of the culture, but it's not agreeable. Just TRY and think, for once. You might like it.

Listen. Just because you think this is garbage, doesn't make you racist. It has nothing to do with "fearing" cultures, or not liking what isn't your own. Just like we have horrible singing white people, brown people are not exempt from the same judgement simply because this is what they do when they're bored in a province where it's snowy and dark ages at a time. Cultural practice aside, from a musical PoV, this is STILL shit. You're hiding behind the race card, when few have even mentioned race

@killerguppy how does one "twist" vocal cords? Throat singing is mostly contracting muscles in the lower throat and pushing air through it. The sound comes from below your actual vocal cords. You can however, use your vocal cords as well but you're using it as you normally would - but the air in the throat makes it sound distorted.
@danielnator A bit nonsensical, for one thing, its a completely different technique, like comparing a guitar with a violin... second, this done by women and the other by men, "proper" is cultural and not interculturally or universally applicable, but i mean its a contest, if you think you can beat them, try it!!
@barriehomeboy I know when I rent, personally, I herd up my landlords, subject them to special laws, and place them on reserves. I also take and populate the best parts of the building, leaving the freezing and barren attic to them. I also give my landlords smallpox.
@TheXeno16 There is no white guy in canada who understands what you said better than I do. We should all be ashamed at the least, or executed for genocide at the worst, for the damage our french and english ancestors did to the owners of the land. Oh Christ now the CSIS guys are going to be on my ass again for being an anarchist.
I really wish dumb-ass people who fear and mock cultures that are not their own would STFU so the rest of us can learn something.
This video, and the others here on Inuit throat singing, is amazing. I am so grateful to all of you for posting these so the rest of us have a chance to see and hear it,and I'm sorry you've been repaid by having to read stupid racist garbage.
@haddayr Throatsinging is actually one of the most interesting forms of singing out there. I had only heard those from Tuva, Mongolia and Northern China pull it off, but I had no idea Tagaq made her career with this! Nice work!
um, all you racist assholes that dont know about other cultures that white, this is my culture. this is called throat singing. go educate yourselfs punks
@butkicker75 I found this page knowing all of those things, and the fact that it's your culture is moot. Favouring something just because it is your own is selectism and bias, the same things you are accusing other people of. So, shut your face until you pass your own qualifications. Secondly, people form opinions of things, you can't handle them, maybe you need a little more self-security. Thirdly, this is shit. It doesn't matter what culture it comes from. Also, all singing is "throat" singing
@TheXeno16 So, did you seek this page out to make criticisms? If you see a live performance of music you don't like in your town, do you go up to the musicians and tell them they sucked? If you don't like it, move along. Why post negative remarks. That is just rude, no matter whose culture it is.
@adamsfall Are you that emotionally invested in this garbage that someone can not like it and it gets your tits in a vice? Just like the rest of the tards on this page, if someone disagrees, they get voted down. How is this any different from what I did with my comment? I didn't rate anyone down, simply critiqued it musically, fair criticism, and it gets me bogged down by people who can't stand to see what they're associated with be criticized. Grow up a bit, people. My opinion is just as valid.
@TheXeno16 It's not a matter of opinion, which you have a right to, but having a little courtesy and respect. What did you accomplish by sharing your opinion (which is all it is) other than offending people? And the fact that you said "all singing is throat singing" shows your own ignorance. Any vocalist will tell you that voice is generated from the diaphragm in traditional western music, hence the distinction. I guess your opinion is more important than others feelings.
@adamsfall My opinion is far more important than feelings. I try to have as close to factual opinion as possible, and where facts are concerned, feelings are moot.
Secondly - During inhalation, the diaphragm contracts, thus enlarging the thoracic cavity (the external intercostal muscles also participate in this enlargement). This reduces intra-thoracic pressure: In other words, enlarging the cavity creates suction that draws air into the lungs. It also helps expel feces by exerting pressure.
@TheXeno16 Obviously, your opinion is more important TO YOU than the feelings of others. That is common with self centered, overly self important, people.
@TheXeno16 Nobody is saying you should not have an opinion. All I am wondering is why you felt compelled to post it here, where people are only trying to share something that they enjoy and are proud of. Can you answer that? Why say something hurtful? What did you accomplish?
@adamsfall What did I accomplish? I added a little perspective. Some realism. Some fucking outside world. Not everyone grew up in the dark, in the cold, in some crazy ass hut, so bored that they developed this junk. Many of us have been exposed to more than a dark hut, and therefore music has developed past grunts and frog noises as primary features. You're looking at blind cave-art and pretending it's Flemish Renaissance. While it might be "music" it's of low quality and character.
Respond to this video...Obviously, you are dumb enough to think that the people who throat sing have no exposure to the outside world. Are the people in the video primitive savages who have never heard any outside music? It sounds like that is what you are saying. Well, thank God you came along to show them the light of civilization. Why don't you just tell them everything you think is wrong with their culture? I am sure they will thank you, bringer of civilization.
@TheXeno16 You remind me of the missionaries who came to America hundreds of years ago and would tell the Natives how backwards they were. Why don't you come here to Alaska and say it to their faces? Who knows, maybe you can civilize them out of their dark little huts.
@TheXeno16 Why are you trying to tell them what 'real' music is, or of what quality? You can't state opinions like facts, it doesn't make sense. You just sound like a moron who needs to go back to elementary school and learn the contrast between fact and opinion. I think you posted this comment in hopes to hurt feeling, because you are the kind of coward who can sit behind a computer screen and attack someone who you will never come across. Bravo for being a complete and total prick.
@TehDrugsAndBabies "You just sound like a moron who needs to go back to elementary school and learn the contrast between fact and opinion."
If you made them throat sing into a pitch calculator, or transcribed this to music, it would look like garbage. It smashes musicalo theory and shits all over it. This is not opinion. If you can factually track and record how un-musical something is, then, logically, it's not musical. Too thought-intensive for you? Figured so.
@TheXeno16 If it reads on a pitch meter it can be seen as music. Are you really going to tell these people that their culture is wrong? For years they have done this so Im sure that they would have realized it wasn't singing a long time ago if that were the case, but its not. You are not some kind of genius who has just discovered that inuit throat singing is not real singing. Music is not music because YOU say it is, music is also not based on what it looks like. Music is based on culture.
@TheXeno16 You know, I've studied music and classical music/singing for the last six years now, and I have to say that the idea of pitch and the twelve tone scale is actually a newish idea. Prior to the Gregorian monks and the creation of the twelve tone scale, this type of music and singing was part of many cultures, and obviously still is today. Take Chinese opera, and the tuning system used for it's instruments, and the way they sing. >>
@TheXeno16 To say this takes music theory and shits all over it is actually backwards in it's thinking. Without the progression of music in various cultures, and the persistence of it, Gregorian chant, and the refining of the church modes wouldn't have happened. This is where music started, in cultures where singing, dancing, and instruments were vital to the culture, and how they expressed themselves ritualistically and spiritually in celebration. >>
@TheXeno16 I understand you don't like it, and you don't have to. Hell, my voice teacher can't listen to Chinese opera for more than five minutes. But considering its origins in music, you simply cannot be a lover and advocate of music theory, without being a lover of music history, and learning how it all began. I'm not trying to start any BS here, and I'm not going to perpetuate any flame wars with you, but I love hearing new and astounding sounds in music. I couldn't fathom singing this.
@TehDrugsAndBabies "Real" music fits without boundaries. That's how we can differentiate between music, and say, a banana. The banana doesn't fit the criteria of music. It's not just my opinion. If you hook a banana up to a pitch meter, it won't work. The banana puts out no feasible tune on it's own. This is exactly the equivolent. If this idea defeats you, then it's likely you'll fail at life regardless, and any way I try and educate you will fail in turn. This explains your mental disability.
@TheXeno16 "The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of music vary according to culture and social context. Music ranges from strictly organized compositions (and their recreation in performance), through improvisational music to aleatoric forms." You fucking ass hat, also your metaphor was absolute shit. Obviously bananas dont fit the fucking criteria they don't make sound. Please stop rambling. It is very unattractive.
@TehDrugsAndBabies If you look anything like the skank in your profile picture, then I could give a shit what you consider attractive - I'm not into boys. That aside, here's a less drastic comparison for you. This is to actual singing what long distance running is to ballet. This is simply seeing who can out-croak the other. There. Short, sweet, and correct. Don't hurt yourself.
@TheXeno16 So because I wear face paint im considered a skank? Someone should inform Bowie. Haha, so now we are back to childhood using insults like "You're a boy."? If you don't mind I'll refer back to your previous post where you say "This is not opinion." Well my good man I am afraid you are contradicting yourself yet again. "This is to actual singing what long distance running is to ballet" <OPINION. Therefor you are incorrect. Holy Fuck! Like I said go back to elementary school.
@TehDrugsAndBabies LMFAO! Yeah, it's the facepaint I was laughing at, and not the face it's on... I've never seen Facepaint before *gasp*
And you're right about one thing, my opinion of you being an opinion. However, you're less intelligent than I thought if you somehow confused the two conversations into just one somehow concerning your face, david bowie, and tuneless endurance chanting... And my metaphor was not an opinion, please explain how it's unfactual by comparison.
@TheXeno16 There are so many things wrong with your comment, try paying attention for a moment and see if you understand. Let me deconstruct your stupidity. 1. I never said a thing about laughing at face paint. I said face paint doesn't make you a skank. 2. I didn't say your opinion of me was an opinion, I said saying this music is not music is in fact your opinion. 3. Peoples expectations of me do not concern me in the least. 4. I didn't say your metaphor was an opinion, I said it was crap.
@TehDrugsAndBabies Please explain how using an example of endurance for "endurance" and an example of studious perfection and aesthetic appeasement for "aesthetics" is incorrect. It's easy to put on some facepaint and make pretend like a knowledgable woman. But stop kidding yourself, you're just some little girl who was emotionally irritated by a crass statement and decided to ride her emotions instead of logic. *shrug*
@TheXeno16 I didn't say that your examples where incorrect, I said they where crap! I had no Idea face paint makes you a knowledgeable woman. I should send you some, so you can stop pretending like that's a dick between your legs. I don't kid, If you've by chance taken me for something more than I am you are the one at fault. I am in fact a young lady, I just happen to be sharp tongued. I was not emotionally irritated, I just get enjoyment out of debates. Do tell, what logic have you to show?
@adamsfall The diaphragm doesn't make noise, your larynx does, in conjunction with your lips, glottis, tongue, and teeth. So your analysis of western music and its derivations you can pretty much cram back up the ass it fell from. My statement stands - all singers use their throats, aka partake in throat-singing, and they also use their diaphragms, just like they use their lungs and their mouths...And these "singers" are sub-par. *shrug* The truth isn't subjective to your feelings.
@TheXeno16 I am talking about where the sound GENERATES. That is if you are pushing air up using the muscles of the diaphragm or if you are constricting the throat mucles. How do you explain the difference in sound? I didn't name it throat singing. Musicologists did. My friend is a voice teacher, but don't believe her or me. Try researching the phenomenon.
@adamsfall "That is if you are pushing air up using the muscles of the diaphragm or if you are constricting the throat mucles. How do you explain the difference in sound? "
You cannot generate sound by clutching your throat muscles. They don't work that way. This is why you can't breathe when your diaphragm has been paralyzed. Your trachea is distinct from your esophagus. Your esophagus can constrict to move food, and leads to your stomach. The trachea and esophagus are seperated by a pharynx
@TheXeno16 So, where are the vocal chords located? Where does a singer breathe from when they sing? The lungs, pushed by the diaphragm. The sound is affected by what the throat muscles do. That is the difference. .
@TheXeno16 Western singing has similar characteristics in the harmonic range, but the breathing process and throat mechanics are completely different. This is an issue you should take up with someone who teaches music. Why do you think trained musicologists call it "throat singing?" I suppose you know better.
@adamsfall "Why do you think trained musicologists call it "throat singing?""
Cause they didn't want to call it saskquatch imitation?
But seriously, they call it throat singing because the only characteristic it has is a throaty squelching noise. Musical quality isn't even the goal, "Unlike the throat singers in other regions of the world, particularly Tibet, Mongolia and Tuva, the Inuit performers are usually women who sing duets in an entertaining effort to outlast each other.
Get a sense of humor, shit breath. it was a joke. You probably joke about every other race of people on earth, but when someone tells an obvious joke about your people you get all defensive. Just relax. I'm not racist, but it's funny. I can't help it. I mean...it IS funny.
If this doesn't prove that Inuit and Siberian-related groups (Siberians, Turks, Mongols etc.) are all related, I don't know what does! They all have forms of throat singing. Plus they all share similar morphology.
It is definitely a melody, I can sing along to it and I could even transcribe it for you. All that a melody requires is pitch and rhythm, even if it is just one pitch repeated over and over (which this isn't).
this is more a rhythm than a melody, from a purely technical point of view it isn't really singing. Thumbs it down all you want, its only my opinion, not making anybody agree
OFF: IMHO, Szomjas-Schiffert György, author of book about Saami yoiks, would agree with You in some aspects (at least for yoiks ). He wrote: it is exactly the beauty in Saami yoiks that they do not even try to be `bel canto', rather they try to render the sounds of nature. I think, the same is true for many shamanic songs (most assistant spirits are zoomorphic at invocations). See article `Sound mimesis in various cultures' in Wikipedia, or `Nganasan shaman trailer' on Youtube.
It isn't "your opinion" if you're claiming that it isn't "technically" singing. You're making an argument that there is a standard for what can and cannot be singing, and imposing that to this and deciding that it isn't, by your whim.
"singing" is a word with a definition, and its my opinion that this shouldn't be classified as singing, because then you're essentially broadening the definition to any kind of vocal art. You might as well call beatboxing, rapping and spoken word poetry all forms of singing then
ha humans, maybe we are just too human, but that us yup yup lol, thanx for clearing that up though hehehe, plus i was just asking which is which, not what we are lmho
People say wtf...but have you ever listened to techno music w/ a growly bassline?
If one opens one's mind, connections are easy to see among musics of different cultures. Humans are all susceptible to other humans' musics. Which is fun!
So glad to see the younger generations keeping on with Native Traditions. How could you make anyone understand what throat singing is, if you had never heard it. It's amazing!

@barriehomeboy I know when I rent, personally, I herd up my landlords, subject them to special laws, and place them on reserves. I also take and populate the best parts of the building, leaving the freezing and barren attic to them. I also give my landlords smallpox.

butkicker75 2 years ago 24
@butkicker75 I found this page knowing all of those things, and the fact that it's your culture is moot. Favouring something just because it is your own is selectism and bias, the same things you are accusing other people of. So, shut your face until you pass your own qualifications. Secondly, people form opinions of things, you can't handle them, maybe you need a little more self-security. Thirdly, this is shit. It doesn't matter what culture it comes from. Also, all singing is "throat" singing
TheXeno16 1 year ago
@TheXeno16 you're 7 months late. Thanks for reminding me of this video, though.
butkicker75 1 year ago
@TheXeno16 So, did you seek this page out to make criticisms? If you see a live performance of music you don't like in your town, do you go up to the musicians and tell them they sucked? If you don't like it, move along. Why post negative remarks. That is just rude, no matter whose culture it is.
adamsfall 1 year ago
@adamsfall Are you that emotionally invested in this garbage that someone can not like it and it gets your tits in a vice? Just like the rest of the tards on this page, if someone disagrees, they get voted down. How is this any different from what I did with my comment? I didn't rate anyone down, simply critiqued it musically, fair criticism, and it gets me bogged down by people who can't stand to see what they're associated with be criticized. Grow up a bit, people. My opinion is just as valid.
TheXeno16 1 year ago
@TheXeno16 It's not a matter of opinion, which you have a right to, but having a little courtesy and respect. What did you accomplish by sharing your opinion (which is all it is) other than offending people? And the fact that you said "all singing is throat singing" shows your own ignorance. Any vocalist will tell you that voice is generated from the diaphragm in traditional western music, hence the distinction. I guess your opinion is more important than others feelings.
adamsfall 1 year ago
@adamsfall My opinion is far more important than feelings. I try to have as close to factual opinion as possible, and where facts are concerned, feelings are moot.
Secondly - During inhalation, the diaphragm contracts, thus enlarging the thoracic cavity (the external intercostal muscles also participate in this enlargement). This reduces intra-thoracic pressure: In other words, enlarging the cavity creates suction that draws air into the lungs. It also helps expel feces by exerting pressure.
TheXeno16 1 year ago
@TheXeno16 Obviously, your opinion is more important TO YOU than the feelings of others. That is common with self centered, overly self important, people.
adamsfall 1 year ago
@TheXeno16 Nobody is saying you should not have an opinion. All I am wondering is why you felt compelled to post it here, where people are only trying to share something that they enjoy and are proud of. Can you answer that? Why say something hurtful? What did you accomplish?
adamsfall 1 year ago
@adamsfall What did I accomplish? I added a little perspective. Some realism. Some fucking outside world. Not everyone grew up in the dark, in the cold, in some crazy ass hut, so bored that they developed this junk. Many of us have been exposed to more than a dark hut, and therefore music has developed past grunts and frog noises as primary features. You're looking at blind cave-art and pretending it's Flemish Renaissance. While it might be "music" it's of low quality and character.
TheXeno16 1 year ago
Respond to this video...Obviously, you are dumb enough to think that the people who throat sing have no exposure to the outside world. Are the people in the video primitive savages who have never heard any outside music? It sounds like that is what you are saying. Well, thank God you came along to show them the light of civilization. Why don't you just tell them everything you think is wrong with their culture? I am sure they will thank you, bringer of civilization.
adamsfall 1 year ago 2
@TheXeno16 You remind me of the missionaries who came to America hundreds of years ago and would tell the Natives how backwards they were. Why don't you come here to Alaska and say it to their faces? Who knows, maybe you can civilize them out of their dark little huts.
adamsfall 1 year ago
@TheXeno16 Why are you trying to tell them what 'real' music is, or of what quality? You can't state opinions like facts, it doesn't make sense. You just sound like a moron who needs to go back to elementary school and learn the contrast between fact and opinion. I think you posted this comment in hopes to hurt feeling, because you are the kind of coward who can sit behind a computer screen and attack someone who you will never come across. Bravo for being a complete and total prick.
TehDrugsAndBabies 1 year ago
@TehDrugsAndBabies "You just sound like a moron who needs to go back to elementary school and learn the contrast between fact and opinion."
If you made them throat sing into a pitch calculator, or transcribed this to music, it would look like garbage. It smashes musicalo theory and shits all over it. This is not opinion. If you can factually track and record how un-musical something is, then, logically, it's not musical. Too thought-intensive for you? Figured so.
TheXeno16 1 year ago
@TheXeno16 If it reads on a pitch meter it can be seen as music. Are you really going to tell these people that their culture is wrong? For years they have done this so Im sure that they would have realized it wasn't singing a long time ago if that were the case, but its not. You are not some kind of genius who has just discovered that inuit throat singing is not real singing. Music is not music because YOU say it is, music is also not based on what it looks like. Music is based on culture.
TehDrugsAndBabies 1 year ago
@TheXeno16 You know, I've studied music and classical music/singing for the last six years now, and I have to say that the idea of pitch and the twelve tone scale is actually a newish idea. Prior to the Gregorian monks and the creation of the twelve tone scale, this type of music and singing was part of many cultures, and obviously still is today. Take Chinese opera, and the tuning system used for it's instruments, and the way they sing. >>
missapriori 1 year ago
@TheXeno16 To say this takes music theory and shits all over it is actually backwards in it's thinking. Without the progression of music in various cultures, and the persistence of it, Gregorian chant, and the refining of the church modes wouldn't have happened. This is where music started, in cultures where singing, dancing, and instruments were vital to the culture, and how they expressed themselves ritualistically and spiritually in celebration. >>
missapriori 1 year ago
@TheXeno16 I understand you don't like it, and you don't have to. Hell, my voice teacher can't listen to Chinese opera for more than five minutes. But considering its origins in music, you simply cannot be a lover and advocate of music theory, without being a lover of music history, and learning how it all began. I'm not trying to start any BS here, and I'm not going to perpetuate any flame wars with you, but I love hearing new and astounding sounds in music. I couldn't fathom singing this.
missapriori 1 year ago
@TehDrugsAndBabies "Real" music fits without boundaries. That's how we can differentiate between music, and say, a banana. The banana doesn't fit the criteria of music. It's not just my opinion. If you hook a banana up to a pitch meter, it won't work. The banana puts out no feasible tune on it's own. This is exactly the equivolent. If this idea defeats you, then it's likely you'll fail at life regardless, and any way I try and educate you will fail in turn. This explains your mental disability.
TheXeno16 1 year ago
@TheXeno16 "The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of music vary according to culture and social context. Music ranges from strictly organized compositions (and their recreation in performance), through improvisational music to aleatoric forms." You fucking ass hat, also your metaphor was absolute shit. Obviously bananas dont fit the fucking criteria they don't make sound. Please stop rambling. It is very unattractive.
TehDrugsAndBabies 1 year ago
@TehDrugsAndBabies If you look anything like the skank in your profile picture, then I could give a shit what you consider attractive - I'm not into boys. That aside, here's a less drastic comparison for you. This is to actual singing what long distance running is to ballet. This is simply seeing who can out-croak the other. There. Short, sweet, and correct. Don't hurt yourself.
TheXeno16 1 year ago
@TheXeno16 So because I wear face paint im considered a skank? Someone should inform Bowie. Haha, so now we are back to childhood using insults like "You're a boy."? If you don't mind I'll refer back to your previous post where you say "This is not opinion." Well my good man I am afraid you are contradicting yourself yet again. "This is to actual singing what long distance running is to ballet" <OPINION. Therefor you are incorrect. Holy Fuck! Like I said go back to elementary school.
TehDrugsAndBabies 1 year ago
@TehDrugsAndBabies LMFAO! Yeah, it's the facepaint I was laughing at, and not the face it's on... I've never seen Facepaint before *gasp*
And you're right about one thing, my opinion of you being an opinion. However, you're less intelligent than I thought if you somehow confused the two conversations into just one somehow concerning your face, david bowie, and tuneless endurance chanting... And my metaphor was not an opinion, please explain how it's unfactual by comparison.
TheXeno16 1 year ago
@TheXeno16 There are so many things wrong with your comment, try paying attention for a moment and see if you understand. Let me deconstruct your stupidity. 1. I never said a thing about laughing at face paint. I said face paint doesn't make you a skank. 2. I didn't say your opinion of me was an opinion, I said saying this music is not music is in fact your opinion. 3. Peoples expectations of me do not concern me in the least. 4. I didn't say your metaphor was an opinion, I said it was crap.
TehDrugsAndBabies 1 year ago
@TehDrugsAndBabies Please explain how using an example of endurance for "endurance" and an example of studious perfection and aesthetic appeasement for "aesthetics" is incorrect. It's easy to put on some facepaint and make pretend like a knowledgable woman. But stop kidding yourself, you're just some little girl who was emotionally irritated by a crass statement and decided to ride her emotions instead of logic. *shrug*
TheXeno16 1 year ago
@TheXeno16 I didn't say that your examples where incorrect, I said they where crap! I had no Idea face paint makes you a knowledgeable woman. I should send you some, so you can stop pretending like that's a dick between your legs. I don't kid, If you've by chance taken me for something more than I am you are the one at fault. I am in fact a young lady, I just happen to be sharp tongued. I was not emotionally irritated, I just get enjoyment out of debates. Do tell, what logic have you to show?
TehDrugsAndBabies 1 year ago
@adamsfall The diaphragm doesn't make noise, your larynx does, in conjunction with your lips, glottis, tongue, and teeth. So your analysis of western music and its derivations you can pretty much cram back up the ass it fell from. My statement stands - all singers use their throats, aka partake in throat-singing, and they also use their diaphragms, just like they use their lungs and their mouths...And these "singers" are sub-par. *shrug* The truth isn't subjective to your feelings.
TheXeno16 1 year ago
@TheXeno16 I am talking about where the sound GENERATES. That is if you are pushing air up using the muscles of the diaphragm or if you are constricting the throat mucles. How do you explain the difference in sound? I didn't name it throat singing. Musicologists did. My friend is a voice teacher, but don't believe her or me. Try researching the phenomenon.
adamsfall 1 year ago
@adamsfall "That is if you are pushing air up using the muscles of the diaphragm or if you are constricting the throat mucles. How do you explain the difference in sound? "
You cannot generate sound by clutching your throat muscles. They don't work that way. This is why you can't breathe when your diaphragm has been paralyzed. Your trachea is distinct from your esophagus. Your esophagus can constrict to move food, and leads to your stomach. The trachea and esophagus are seperated by a pharynx
TheXeno16 1 year ago
@TheXeno16 So, where are the vocal chords located? Where does a singer breathe from when they sing? The lungs, pushed by the diaphragm. The sound is affected by what the throat muscles do. That is the difference. .
adamsfall 1 year ago
@adamsfall Your friend apparently has no idea how the human body functions.
TheXeno16 1 year ago
@TheXeno16 Western singing has similar characteristics in the harmonic range, but the breathing process and throat mechanics are completely different. This is an issue you should take up with someone who teaches music. Why do you think trained musicologists call it "throat singing?" I suppose you know better.
adamsfall 1 year ago
@adamsfall "Why do you think trained musicologists call it "throat singing?""
Cause they didn't want to call it saskquatch imitation?
But seriously, they call it throat singing because the only characteristic it has is a throaty squelching noise. Musical quality isn't even the goal, "Unlike the throat singers in other regions of the world, particularly Tibet, Mongolia and Tuva, the Inuit performers are usually women who sing duets in an entertaining effort to outlast each other.

It is definitely a melody, I can sing along to it and I could even transcribe it for you. All that a melody requires is pitch and rhythm, even if it is just one pitch repeated over and over (which this isn't).

See article `Sound mimesis in various cultures' in Wikipedia, or `Nganasan shaman trailer' on Youtube.
ungazik 2 years ago 2
It isn't "your opinion" if you're claiming that it isn't "technically" singing. You're making an argument that there is a standard for what can and cannot be singing, and imposing that to this and deciding that it isn't, by your whim.
Khanstant 2 years ago
"singing" is a word with a definition, and its my opinion that this shouldn't be classified as singing, because then you're essentially broadening the definition to any kind of vocal art. You might as well call beatboxing, rapping and spoken word poetry all forms of singing then
theoriginalmcsquare 2 years ago
@theoriginalmcsquare I see your point, but I'm a singer and if this vocal technique is called that way, I dont have the least objections to that
