Great video. I got my first ember from a bow drill a few weeks ago and I was told that the spindle should be on the outside of the bow instead of the inside. Thanks for sharing Take Care.
Good points about the progression in knives and fire making. Until you understand how to work he kindling you really can't do much with a spark. I think starting a fire with a single match was a good task set for me as a boy. My first knife was a SAK. And I closed it on my fingers, so +1 on the lock blade. I now like my swisstool and fallkniven f1. If I could justify a third knife it'd be the fallkniven wm1 as a neck knife, but a hatchet or axe is another extra and it's all extra weight. The pl
Can't remember the last time that I favorited a video but I think it's time for me to add a new one up top. Thanks for the adventure Jordan!
Almost forgot to ask, do you prefer your bow spindle a bit longer and if so, is that to provide more bow clearance or do you just like a higher socket height? I kinda like the socket to be in the middle of my left chin but then I usually drag the bow on the ground unless I find a place work on a slight bow side decline.
I probably have wierd body geometry when I do the bow drill but I preffer a spindle that is about 12" long because that keeps my bearing arm almost straight. I'll try to desribe my posture to you, my left arm wraps around my left knee under the knee cap, my right knee is on the ground touching my left heel and my chin is almost on my left knee. I find that this gives me a clear path for the bow and also gives me a lot of control on the set.
Great choice! Everyone's first knife should be a Vicotorinox, locking blade even better, however, I have to say that I learned to respect the sharpness of a blade very quickly when my swiss army knife blade closed on my hand.
I have used the transparent, adjustable flame lighters for many years and have never ever had a problem with even one. As a pipe smoker for over 30 years, I used about one every month and never had a bad one,
I LIVE IN THE CITY, AND WHEN I GET MY CHANCE; LIKE A LITTLE KID IM IN THE WOODS PRACTICING MY BUSHCRAFRT AND I HAVE TO SAY IM STILL LEARNING, AND KEEP MAKING GREAT VIDEOS, YOU HAVE A SIMPLICITY ON SHOWING THE TRADE.
Thanks for another video, im amazed at the swiss army knife. i always overlooked it. maybe its time i took mine out for some use. great video as usaul. Stay safe mate!
If you use the Egyptian bow drill method where you ream a hole through the spindle for the bow string to go through it wont matter if the string stretches. Demonstrated at 15:26 in this video watch?v=v1eWx76RGVM
A BIC lighter is a poor choice and the most expensive disposiable lighter on the market. I highly recommend a disposiable lighter that is transparent so you can see how much fuel is remaining and an adjustable flame to produce a hotter flame when you need it. They also cost a bout half what a BIC lighter cost. Check out Walmart.
@buckarue100 gotta be careful with the adjustable flame ones, i got one to shoot a flame over 1 meter long haha.. you could literally see the fluid draining, i emptied a whole lighter in less then 5 mins, Only problem with these cheap ones i found is the flint can sometimes snap from its housing rendering the light totally useless. its worth the few extra cents for a quality Bic
Well said everyone has to start somewhere and with that you get to enjoy the learning process and being out in nature is always good, great video as always
Let's talk knives. For EDC I highly recommend a Leatherman Juice S2 which has a plain edge knive blade plus a fine pair of needle nose pliers, which is especially useful for untying knots, a pair of useable scissors, etal. I also recommend a Victorinox Framer which has a plain edge knive blade, an fine saw the back of which is a perfect striker for a firesteel and a awl for reaming and punching holes, etal. A locking blade is for stabbing and not the least bit necessary for cutting and slicing..
Good choice - I'm middle-aged and have used swiss army knives or a locking Victorinx Tracker style knife for the majority of camp chores since I was a kid. They're great, utilitarian knives that are tough, easy to sharpen and carry. Good call on the mora too! Thanks for sharing and best wishes -
Well, here is yet another of my unsolicited, arm-chair opinions (FWIW) -- As a purely bushcraft knife, I recommend the Mora Companion MG Carbon (formerly, the Clipper MG Carbon) -or- The Mora Bushcraft Force (but it is 2x the cost, at ~$30 US and is 12c27 Stainless) Since the Mora Companion is only ~$15US and carbon is a better trainer, for sharpening I would give him a Companion MG or one of the similar Moras. BUT, to include "Survival Camping" as a POU? ... WENGER RANGER ! watch?v=FKI6q3JRQQI
I'm another who has carried a Victorinox for most of my life. Well, I should say several. I have used a couple up and given away I don't know how many. Great piece of gear.
i like your apprenticeship comparison. a logical progression of tools and techniques makes sense. my learning sort of jumped around, depending on what i found next in books. will there be more footage of you with your new student? it might keep him out of a bad situation on his own.
Wise words towards the end, learning by doing is by far the best method in my opinion. but u tube helps a LOT by giving ideas and mentors like you - thanks a lot mate.
Victorinox always +1! I'm sporting a Workchamp for EDC myself. They're super easy to sharpen, are packed with goodness and will basically survive WW3.
what kind of gun is that a 22 ??
