  • The audience is so Quiet, maybe wandering ;what the hell are we doing here, watching this GAY performance.?

  • Are they, GAYS?? that's where Michael Jackson got his idea of the GAY Militia uniform.

  • Is this vidclip fromt he flip wilson show?

  • Osmonds got some serious swag...

  • I don't doubt this is lip-synched, but it's such a fun, happy song! Love it!

  • Damn these white dudes can jam

  • As a little girl I was so in love with Donny, but now, as a more mature woman, i realize the sexiest Osmond brother was actually Jay! Watch him dance. He has got the moves baby! A natural!

  • @bbughtiful I always loved Jay best!

  • @reduff627 you and me both!

  • aids

  • I can only imagine how hard this was to do. Those crazy suits and umpteen hundred moves. I wonder if they were able to dance this in one take. They couldn't have performed this dance while singing live 'cause their mic cords would have tripped them off the stage. LOL At the time (I was 6, sheesh!) I didn't realize how talented they were.

  • @34airflow There is something called an overhead boom microphone; a device which has been around for over fifty years. It is used when singers are not basically standing still. Very high-tech stuff... in the 1950s.

  • @JeffersonDinedAlone

I have a copy of this song and it's identical to what is heard on this clip from the Flip Wilson Show. So there's no doubt in my mind that it was lip synched. In the wide shots at the opening and closing, we would have noticed any boom mikes. Today, in a similar situation, artists might perform using a wireless mic, like the ones developed by Sennheiser. Thanks for the history of boom mikes, though.

  • I found some of my Osmond Brothers albums the other day. I opened the crazy horse album cover and found my Puppy Love 45 inside. wooot! now, if I could find an actual record player, I'd have it made. LOL!

  • @nhford07

You can find a nice record /cd/tape/ radio player at Target. Records are still the BEST!

  • @nhford07 they are out there, try Target. I also know Crosely still makes them,I happen to have two record players. Wouldn't know what to do without them!

  • This was AESOME WOW I remember this the day it aired.. BTW

Go here on youtube and hear what Donnie had to say about his friend MJ

  • You can hate if you want...but them Mormons put in work!

  • looks like they use some of this choregraphy for the mob dance that donny did in vegas on 7/22/11

  • 5 stars

  • I don't think the choreography is outdated. It's better than that crotch-grabbing crap popularized by Michael Jackson.

There has never been a cute, child singer to match Donnie. Alas, he reached his peak so early.

  • @verypeachy1 its interesting how they rotate to each singer

  • this song is similar to Bogie Feaver from the Silvers

  • This is better than any song of 2011!!!!

  • @trevor40 agreed!! from JBT3168

  • alan jay did alot of choreogrphy back then.. alan is oldest here... he has MS now..hes the tall one on left

  • the short one is donny u moron

  • Marie is the short one, right? She was pretty flat-chested back then.

  • donnie is still hot..justin bieber. doesnt got the moves like these guys...woohoo!

  • @charger4079 your mother is a ROID HEAD!

  • Fake Jackson FIve, White version. SMH

  • Comment removed

  • @rumbleinthejungle80 The Osmonds predate the Jacksons by 6 years, and The Osmonds were on TV 2 years before the Jackson 5 started performing.

  • Love there costumes!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great! I love it.

  • That was some awesome choreography for back then. They are so AWESOME!

  • Nurfana! I love this video! I get just excited watching them perform as I did when I was 10. So Thank you!

  • what's with the audience? they're so well behaved! the osmonds are awesome!

  • @luvrof70s yes I noticed that too. I think they were told to keep still ahead of time. There's a guy standing offstage giving signals telling everyone what to do.

  • one of my favs

    x

  • great song and their dancing is just awesome the kids of these days should see this clip and start dancing the same instead of shaking their behinds and stuff

  • This is Fantastic!!!

  • Whoa. That choreography! And the outfits...simply amazing. But in a good way.

  • And they say "White men can't dance"! Well, whoever said that was not a fan of the Osmonds! Still love listening to their music and I will never forget when I saw them in MN and Marie in Minot. Wonderful shows, wonderful music. And no matter what troubles you were facing, they would help you forget. Such an uplifting family! I am still crazy for them after all these years!

  • I have to give it them...the choreography is on point!

  • they always had the greatest dance routines..love it :)

  • They're so light on their feet.

  • Anyone in the know as to who their choreographer was or did they do it themselves?

  • @Khultan According to the web and Jay's website, Jay choregraphed the Osmonds' routines. He was also choregrapher for the Donny & Marie show. Quite a guy, huh?

  • @Sewnknit Yes, it's quite remarkable, in that the Osmonds took to dancing by chance of being at a transitional time past the 1960s and, perhaps, of being young as music continued to produce dance scores but other bands did not at all take to dancing and they are numerous, but as an aside, one curious unusual group would be the Cowsills, The only member to actively take on dancing proactively in the band is Susan Cowsill. It's a shame they broke up before they could, perhaps, seek a new way.

  • @Khultan - Ah, the Cowsills, a very underrated group. Sadly, Barry Cowsill died during hurricaine Katrina. I always liked their music.

  • @Sewnknit These are the Osmonds, not Cowsills!

  • @cjdahlien I didn't say the Osmonds were the Cowsills, I was referring to the previous comment.

  • @Khultan Merrill did most, but they all were a part of the dance routines!

  • i remember seeing them in toronto, ontario TWICE....ahhh the memories..

  • this was so fascinating to watch again!!! they are fabulous all the way around...the choreography was supurb...and the hard work, well it showed with sparkles!!!! Great guys and family....best to you always...susie davis/chicago!

  • Brings back my youth. I had pictures of Donnie every where

  • funny stuff!!! got me rollin

  • I'm a 48 year old male and I'm not ashamed to say that I thought these guys were THE cat's ass back In the early '70's....and I STILL like there music.....what can I say...And Donny's voice In this particular song Is to DIE for.

  • I saw them in concert when I was 8 years old! Love them. The osmonds shouldn't be compared to the Jacksons at all. This is a video of the Osmonds. Nothing to do with the J-5. Love the J-5 as well!!!!!

  • I remember the concerts....No I did not scream..Saw no sense in it...But were they good? You bet they were. What you see is what they did...

  • I used to dance like that in high school...lol...(hiding face).

  • i love this performance!! My brother is black, 23 years old and loves rap and when i showed him this clip, even he was impressed!! lol

  • See Donny could dance years before DWTS. No wonder he won!

  • They look like girls

  • the Osmonds,my banana splits lunchbox, and sat morn cartoons--ah those were the days-remember yall???????

  • Oh good god ya these guys r doing it for me!

  • I always loved the Osmonds - their harmony was outstanding! Dancing good, too! Glad to see some positive remarks here, though we could do without the foul language. Thank you.

  • @Sewnknit MY GOODNESS YOU CANT COMPARE THE JACKSONS TO THE OSMONDS..BOTH WERE TALENTED ARTIST.. AND IN THIER OWN RIGHT VERY GOOD.. THE OSMONDS WERE TIGHT AS DANCERS , BUT THE JACKSONS WERE MORE POLISHED AS FOR FLOW OF STYLE IN MORE SOUTRAINISH .. AND LITTLE MICHEAL TOOK IT TO ANOTHER LEVEL ... ONE KNEW THAT HE WAS A SUPERSTAR ..LOOK AT HOW HE DANCED ASA KID.. U CAN TELL HE TOOK LESSIONS FROM JAMES BROWN ....EFFECT IN HOW YOU PRSENT THOSE MOVES........ CAPTURE THE AUDIANCE AT FRIST GLANCE

  • @sierria64 - I wasn't comparing the Osmonds to the Jacksons. Where, in my comment, did you see that I was? Both were very talented artists. If I remember correctly, Michael was an admirer of Fred Astaire - not James Brown. James has his style and Michael his. All deservs to be respected for their choices.

  • Response: Joe South wrote this FOR the Osmonds. And I've yet to see any Jacksons tv performance from this era this tight. People are getting the brothers confused with Michael. All they did was shake. Michael & Jermaine were 100% of the show.

  • @MultiBudboy Actually as I relearned today from the Tampa Bay area's Q105's Sunday morning Top 20 countdown Joe South originally wrote this tune, "Yo-yo" for Billy Joe Royal (of "Down in the Boondocks" fame) and Royal did record it in the mid-1960's, but it didn't do as well for him as it would later in 1971 for the Osmonds. You need to get all your facts correct before you post.

  • @MultiBudboy There is an audio only video of Billy Joe Royal's minor 1967 hit of the original "Yo-yo" as posted by garageband66. You might want to take a listen to it -- it isn't as overly produced, in a 1970's Mike Curb kind of way as the Osmonds' version, and actually sounds more dancable than the Osmonds' version.

  • @MultiBudboy MY GOODNESS YOU CANT COMPARE THE JACKSONS TO THE OSMONDS..BOTH WERE TALENTED ARTIST.. AND IN THIER OWN RIGHT VERY GOOD.. THE OSMONDS WERE TIGHT AS DANCERS , BUT THE JACKSONS WERE MORE POLISHED AS FOR FLOW OF STYLE IN MORE SOUTRAINISH .. AND LITTLE MICHEAL TOOK IT TO ANOTHER LEVEL ... • So, that's where the Brady kids stole their moves from!

  • One of their best of many songs. When Music was real unlike the kind we have now a days.

  • Love the choreography to this... no wonder they managed to stay so fit and in-shape. And the hair! Enough on their heads for 10 more people! One tiny thing wrong... I always thought they wore their favorite colors with their stage costumes, but in this it seems Wayne (my fave) is the only one wearing his favorite color (orange)... the others are mixed up. Or am I wrong about that?

  • did they lift the song from the jacksons just like they lifted the dance moves & style from them?

  • I was thinking about this today and had to watch it. I remember actually watching this show as a young girl.

Jacksons vs. The Osmonds, Osmonds vs. The Jacksons. Those boys could dance.

Gosh, I'm old! But that was real music back in them days...

  • FYI, the guy who made the jumpsuits for ELVIS also made them for the Osmond brothers.

  • Back when people had actual talent and could do it all.

    bitchin stuff!

  • i want to kill myself now

  • AMAZING!!!!!!!!

  • Right On!

  • I don't care how outdated the choreography is - I LOVE the dancing that these Osmonds do!!

  • @Hermione4 I love the dancing too, and the Osmonds!

  • @Hermione4 I love the choreography, especially the way they made their exit!!!

  • @Hermione4 THE OSMONDS WERE TIGHT AS DANCERS , BUT THE JACKSONS WERE MORE POLISHED AS FOR FLOW OF STYLE IN MORE SOUTRAINISH ..

  • the way the dance is is just great, they cycle through each person switft and simple.

  • Was honored to of met the whole family in 1980

at the Nugget floor show in Reno, Nevada, what a

night that was & there mom & dad(Olive & George)

were such sweethearts to me( may the RIP). Actually the whole family was nice, you couldn't of met sweeter ppl. Jimmy was so cute with

his puppet performance that night that it still brings a smile to my face!!.. Excellent Video & song!!!..

Thanks 4 sharing the love of this family!!...

    (100,000 + Stars)

    Love: jan

  • Ay they could dance they ass off and had the nerve to have some soul!! Loves it!!!

  • I love them

  • Jay Osmond was the the really STAR of this group over shadowed by Donny of course

  • Do you mean Merrill, the guy on lead vocals??

  • agreed

  • Dig the hair and the outfits! Look at these white boys get down! The Jacksons and the Osmonds were all really great friends! The media tried to make up a rivalry between them.

  • Did you notice that NBC studio audience? They were like maniquins. They looked all middle-aged, and restrained. What a waste for a talented group like the Os-Bros.

  • OH YEAH!! just like a Yo0o-Yo0o0o...i freakin LOVE this song :D:D

  • @BeatleMonkeegirl15

Down By the Lazy River is better! LOL

  • WHOOP NOW! saw them in Tulsa back in the 70s. Had the biggest crush on Donnie! Awesome memories :DD

  • Congrats to Donny on Winning "Dancing With The Stars" :-) woohoo!!!

  • I loved them then and I love them now!!!

  • I saw this exact performance on Tv on the Flip Wilson show in 1971. I was 10 when I saw it.

Since Donny is now on Dancing w/the Stars, I'm reviewing this. It's even better than I remembered. The Osmonds and the J5 were the Funkiest MF's on the planet! God, they were talented! Merrill Osmond had a rockin' voice. Lots of Rock musicians were into this song back then, including me. Tommy Lee from Motley Crue said his first record album was an Osmonds lp! They were my first concert. Cheers!

  • Awesome. Grew up watching the OSmands & the Jackson 5 dance like this. Kiss Ass.

  • The Jonas Bros and all these other boy bands..will never have anything on the Osmonds..and the Jackson Five!!!!! Michael Jackson...and Donny Osmond...were talented in their own right! But being with their brothers...they really showed what a family act who is so talented really should be!

  • wow..the jumpsuits. I think KISS got the idea from this act

  • Donny was bad ass!....much props to the O brothers.

  • me and my bets mate copied part fo this danc ein p.e wen we were in yera 8 i fink. it was just me her. the others wuldnt do it. they thought it look stupid. it may did, but it was fun!!!

  • cherry32959, thanks for the info, that's fascinating. I should have realized, that actually makes perfect sense. If I had been there and had been given that warning, I sure would have been on my best behavior too. :)

  • i love the osmonds and this vid thanks 4 the post genna

  • Well for me, and I grew up listening to them and posters on my walls of them it was their closeness as a family. They were a good and moral family, just check out their family history. I thought they were awesome, heck I still do!

  • Oh darling, then your hormones ain't workin'. lol.

  • You can't see it? The Osmonds and the Jackson's were the bomb back in the day!! The choreography was slick and neat and well executed. I'm sorry but a lot of the groups now, just don't have the magic of these groups from back in the day!

  • Tell ya what, as a 49 year old guy who remembers those gushy teen idol days and what the girls liked-let's face it, these are some pretty funky moves. If Donny could handle this back then, he can handle anything they throw at him on Dancing With The Stars. The boys are all over the place here. Expertly done.

  • Donny was so cute here! hpoe wins on Dancing With The Stars,He's already got my votes!

  • they were the coolest when we was young

  • That audience looks like they could be in Weekend At Bernie's, go figure. But then again, I suppose if they had packed the place with young girls, we probably wouldn't have been able to hear the Osmonds, lol. I was 12 when I saw this on t.v. and still remember practically screaming over Donny and Jay (Jay was my favorite) in my front room but trying to control myself in front of my parents, lol. By the way, got to meet Donny as an adult and talked to him, great guy, very nice.

  • Audience seems dead.

  • they were warned to not scream or they would cut the show, escort them out and start over. I was there.

  • Good times!!!

  • Whenever I hear the beginning of "Day Tripper" by The Beatles, I automatically think of this song.

    Gotta love 1:22-1:33 here!

  • Elvis suits and Dorothy Hamill hair-dos, love it.

  • Man the audiance is tranqualized...wtf?

  • Man how Flip had to grit his teeth when he said "my soul brothers"!!@ LOLOL

  • Hot AND sexy, I say. These guys were so badass. SO talented. When they dance, watch Wayne - that guy belonged on Broadway with his moves. He's in the orange belt - he always wears the orange! Love 'em, love 'em.......

  • Marie was really good looking back then.

  • Elvis' jumpsuit maker made these too. Merrill was a hottie!

  • hot? or positively sexy?

    hmmm

    someone help me decide

    <3

  • really good video jay and merrill are really hot

  • I agree, excellent video!!! they were all really hot, But It will always be DONNY in my heart! Talk about SEXY!!!!!

  • I saw donny and marie in vegas in April. Front row seats and backstage meet and greet. For a 51 year old man, he can still dance. he has the moves.

  • My favorite song of all time. Is it bad that I can still remember all the words???

  • I'm a click away from buy a ticket to Vegas!!!! Oooohhhh

  • I'm right there with ya! Oh my Donny!

  • This is one of their most rockinest songs ever!

then again, all their songs are cool..

  • donny was smokin whenever he was youngerr. <3

  • From Anna,

Hi Ryann, Had you heard that the Osmonds 50th tour of the UK was going to be on a 2 set DVD in August? It will cost $50.00 in US.

    Your friend,

    Anna

  • strangly, I've always loved this.

  • Absolutely LOVE rainydaywoman1957's comment - "TEMPTATIONS ON SPEED."

While watching this I was thinking how much they remind me of the Temptations, then I read her comment! They were another one of my favorite groups growing up!!!

  • Great video and song! My favorite group of all time! The dancing is a hoot!

  • wow! this was definately one of my favorites! i will always love the osmonds! i can sing along with all of their songs to this day!! loveyouosmonds4ever!!

  • The Osmonds were a real family with talent. I am glad I got a chance too see them now

  • Comment removed

  • Donny voice is really great in this one..

  • 1.hou je adem in

    2.Kopier dit

    3.Plak het bij 2 andere video's

als je het lukt ben je een goede zoener

  • They didnt need to try so hard... they had nice voices.

  • A moment in time. Bing a teenager was along time ago.

  • temptations on speed

  • ...and those people in the audience just sit there...this is such a good video!

  • This is one of the best single "spots" I've ever seen. I tell EVERYONE about it! Rock on, Osmonds!

  • Flip Wilson Was Cool! Damm Good & Funny tv Show!

  • Dodohead, why'd you watch this then? And what's with the language? I guess you don't have much in the vocabulary department, hmm?

  • I was born in '68, my first girl crush was Donny Osmond. Too little to remember their performances back then; I just remember the songs on the records. My point is, I can't believe the preciseness and polished performances they gave. This is amazing for its time. Who can't love the Osmonds!

  • dodewhatever, YOU were the one to go to the site. don't blame the singers. how juvenille.

  • DodecahedronHead is calling this "gay a** sh**" and yet he spends his time trying to learn how to play with a yo yo

  • Um Sierria, you're obviously not watching this video or you're blind. Of course they have rhythm...what are you TALKING about...

  • a) you're beyond wrong

    b) my god, you can't spell

  • I also remember seeing this the night it aired. Yes the dance steps are dated, BUT it IS a clip from the 'olden' days ;)

Back in the day, these guys were hot. I loved them. Saw them in concert at Madison Square Garden with a bunch of friends and a mom took us. It was a great time. Great memories! This was the kind of stuff you could take your kids to and not worry they are seeing questionable material. Innocence ruled! Thank you so much!

  • Pay attention to this and you'll see how incredible this performance really is. They show up and have to choreograph everything to fit the stage and its surroundings. Back then, they didn't have weeks to plan it, but hours, if not minutes. They pulled this off amazingly. Plus, for 1971, the "dancing" you apparently criticize was the style. I have seen plenty of the Jackson 5 in comparison. The Osmonds were much better and more polished.

  • I agree. Watch when Dony and Merrill switch singing lead, how seamlessly

    they switch places. Incredible.

  • Sierria, you are out of your friggin' mind. The Jackson 5 are not even in the same league - not professionally or personally. If you have no taste, and you apparently don't, keep off of the Osmond videos and message board.

  • Thank you for sharing this! I loved the Flip Wilson show. Too bad they didn't use Merrill's voice front and center, and instead turned into a Donny/Pop machine. They could have actually been a good hard rock band.

  • No offense meant Chuck, but I don't think Mormons are inclined to do "Hard Rock"

  • Check out their video for "Crazy Horses"

  • they r so amazingly awesome! itz not even funny! donny makes me die when he hits 16!haha

  • Great dancing.

  • LOVE this.....so happy...

    xx

  • If only entertainers had the Osmonds' spunk, moral values, and charisma! I LOVE IT! Thank you for posting this cheerful video!

  • you're right!

  • Autumn of 1971.
