She is my #1 FAVORITE performer....next is Cameron Carpenter, Donald Dumler, Peter Hurford, Michael Murray, and Carol Williams! All superb artists with a talent compared to none!!!!
Marie-Claire, consummate master musician as usual, here demonstrates how important memorizing the music is to effective presentation of the music undistracted by the visual clutter of the pages.
As Bach probably wore almost exactly the same type of shoes as Mdme Alain, I defy anyone to prove that he didn't "cheat" and use his heels on tricky passages.....lol!
The type of shoes he might have worn misses the point. That's actually very easy to "prove" since the pedals of the organs of his day were short little affairs not really long enough to reach the heels, though as you say there was probably some "cheating" that went on, especially on the part of those who weren't such geniuses terribly daunted by his and his music's greatness, as usual a greatness often sadly unappreciated by those who paid his remuneration.
MCA is an excellent lesson in the idea of 'economy of motion'. I think it's interesting that she quite intentionally uses her heels on the pedal solos, when she could have just as easily used her toes (most purists would look down their nose at this, but I say go for it!).
Marie-Claire Alain (FR) und Diane Bish (USA) sind meiner Meinung die weltbesten Organistinnen. Ihre Leistung wird wohl nie wieder erreicht. Einfach gigantisch.
As part of Saxony, all Leipzig's residents (which included Bach from 1723-1750) were subjects of the Electoral Saxon Duke aka King in (not "of") Poland. One of the reasons Bach sought (and obtained) the title "Electoral Saxon and Royal Polish Court Composer" was to raise his social standing in Leipzig and have the support of the King in his dealings with the Leipzig officials!
no combination action, 100% mechanical - stops and keys - I only saw her draw one stop in the middle of the piece - a manual to pedal coupler for the two pedal solo passages
Wonderfull played Marie-Claire! I know this piece from our basilika in Stockholm and love to hear it! Complements to the Recording crew, they have done a great job and show the musical drama of the music in there pictures!
@HerrWarja I would hasten to say the M-CA clearly demonstrates the way I pipe organ should be played. Look at some of the other 'big names' that studied under her - Diane Bish, Guy Bovet, to name a few. M-CA set the standard.
Truly she doubtless has set great standards, yet she is the first to say that she herself has stood on the shoulders of her great predecessor giants, not least of whom was her great brother Jehan, one of her first teachers, whose champion she remains, whose relatively few organ works, like Franck, have carved an essential place for him in the repertoire. One can hardly be a great organist without mastering the monuments of Franck's Three Chorales and Alain's Litanies.
Sad to say her brother WAS Jehan Alain, for it is an inestimable loss that he was killed in defending France against the German invasion in 1940 when he was just 29
Staggering, both musically and visually. Many thanks.

Hola a todos. Después de ejecutar ella esta versión, ella tendría que hacer lo que hizo Beethoven después de tocar la Variaciones de Diabelli . . .
Insuperable esta señora.
Larga vida para poder disfrutar del mejor de los placeres.

Bach visited Dresden many times, for personal and professional reasons. The documented professional trips are
1717 (contest with Marchand);
1725,1731 (organ recitals at St. Sophia's);
1733 (July, performance of B minor mass BWV 232);
1736 (organ recital at Our Lady's shortly after Bach's appointment as "Electoral Saxon and Royal Polish Court Composer");
1738, 1741 (unknown purpose)
But what was the occasion in 1746?

@russedav5 Are you serious? MCA's brother is Jehan Alain, the French composer who wrote "Litanies"??? Amazing!!!
