  • The Count Basie band could have made those so called " imposible "

trombone riffs that the comentator mentioned .

  • The Herculoids!

  • @Actionguy1 Ted Nichols composed and conducted the main theme and soundtrack of The Herculoids in 1967, not Hoyt S. Curtin. But Hanna-Barbera's musical editors used Curtin's score for Jonny Quest in allmost every action/science fiction cartoon they produced. Ted Nichols composed the soundctracks for:

    Space Ghost & Dino Boy

    The Fantastic Four

    Birdman & The Galaxy Trio

    Moby Dick & Mighty Mightor

    Shazzan

But Curtin's music scores were present in each of them. He was that awesome

  • I want Hoyt's background music from the Hannah Barbera Godzilla cartoon. the man is a genius!

  • I used to wonder why marching bands didn't do the "Johnny Quest" theme, since it's so exciting and dynamic. Then I found out only the very best trombonists could even come close to playing it! Too bad. The full theme is pure adrenaline trapped in brass.

  • What a treat! Thank you so much. Between the JQ themesong and the Jetson's riffs, incredible!

  • Thank you for this, and for the music!

  • So amazingly imaginative, without limitations, yet so perfectly tasteful, exciting, and classy - Hoyt Curtin had it all. I haven't heard anything currently that rivals his talent. And no computers or samplers ; all was done with a great jazz orchestra, and his compositions / arrangements. Truly humbling is Curtin - a genius that few of the current "stars" know or acknowledge. I hope his family can enjoy the fact that more and more of us are "knowing" his genius and loving it.

  • My channel features fanvids I made with 'The Flintstones' and Mr. Curtins underscore has never sounded better. It would be nice if he were still alive and able to hear the music with todays technology.

  • I like his Soundtracks of Fantastic Four series.

  • Hoyt would absolutely love this! He died too early to see this wonderful technology known as YouTube! I have several things I can share with you. He had several CDs distributed by Rhino Records. I also have a few pictures of him in the act of conducting the orchestra. He was an amazing man. He was the silent, hidden jewel in the Hanna Barbera machine. His family's wish would be that he would one day get the recognition he deserved. His music was awesome and only matched by his kindness.

  • That's one of the coolest things I've come across in a while. Thanks for posting that, whoever you are.

  • Great Post Chris. You're right... it did kick ass didn't it ?

  • May I ask under which date in your blog I can find the Hoyt Curtin documentary?

  • @aldiakaroofus That is a blog planned for the future, when I have enough materials, music and pictures to do the man justice.

  • I just watched disc 2 of my season 4 flintstones dvd set and it includes a bonus featurette on mr. curtin. He is AMAZING. Thanks for posting!

  • Absolutely the best! Extremely under rated!

  • Absolutely the best!

  • I'm a trombonist and I must say that I would never challenge a composer to make a score more difficult for me, no matter how good I was. The movement of the instrument to get to the notes is as much as twenty times and at least four times the distance any other wind instrument has to move.

  • Thank you for these videos. I often wondered who was the real talents behind the quest series. As a professional with 3 regional Emmy nominations in my career, I can say with confidence... Congratulations. Your depth of information is very impressive, with care and respect to the artists involved. (In my opinion), these videos can stand up against ANY documentary currently on broadcast.

  • Thank you, Chrisweb037, for this wonderful piece about my uncle, Hoyt Curtin. I had never seen it, and it is a great tribute to a man we loved and also thought was a musical genius! Tiny correction - born in Downey, CA and lived in San Bernardino, CA. It is wonderful to see a knowledgeable and admiring portrait of him. He was also a very funny guy! Thanks again.

  • Wow! Fantastic! Thank you.

  • Hoyt's theme for "Jonny Quest," as well as all the incidental music he composed for the show, ranks as some of the most iconographic , instantly recognizable music ever composed. It's a wonder more bands don't cover the tremendous theme music from this show, it ranks right up there with "Hawaii 5-O" and "Dragnet" in terms of great instrumental tracks.

  • My search from the QT Hush theme led me here...by far the coolest keyboard piece ever.WOW ~ i hit the jackpot what a treat to learn about Hoyt Curtin was my influence.

  • We'll have a gay ole' time!! Luv it!

  • If I ever had the chance to conduct musicians in a piece, this would be it!

  • Hoyt was a genius. The Quest theme was my own personal sound track back when I was a kid. One christmas morning my parents gave me a pair of PF Flyers and a black turtle kneck sweater. I use to put them on and rush down to watch Jonny Quest on Saturday mornings. Afterwards I'd disappear for hours running around the neighborhood pretending to be Jonny.. Oops, just got a little teary eyed remembering back to those childhood days.

  • "Jack-hammer brass" That's the perfect expression! Thanks for posting!

  • Can some orchestra somewhere do an entire live show consisting of Hoyt Curtin's music? If I had the moolah, hell, I'd produce one at the Kennedy Center, at that, and take it on the road. Another kick-ass piece was the theme of Wally Gator.

  • aint that a bitch! a white boy turned a li'l black boy on to jazz! hoyt curtin's music is the shit! i love those old HB themes to this day.

  • NOW I KNOW!! I always wondered who composed the theme for "Battle of the Planets" I swear that minute 30 was some of the most exciting moments of my childhood.

RIP Mr. Curtin. You will be remembered

  • If the best background music is for NFL films this is the second best. The BEST tv theme ever.

  • Thanks for some great info on this incredible composer-arranger. JQ theme is still my favorite theme for being the wildest piece of music ever heard.

  • The "Jonny Quest" signature tune & underscores by Curtin rivals *anything* that Lalo Schifrin ever did for telly & film, m8's!

    And "J.Q." is my ALL-TIME UBER-MEGA-ULTRA RAVE-FAVE toon & music!

    Thanx fer this retrospective vignette...

  • Hoyt Curtin's theme music and underscores were always a major appeal of Hanna-Barbera cartoons some 40 years ago. It's cool now that with youTube and other internet resources we're able to find out more about this incredible musician. He made his name in animated cartoons but his composing was great regardless of the medium. His body of work would have fit live action TV shows or big budget movies.

  • I love his music, too! It's brilliant!

Does anybody know, where I can get the background music from the flintstones? Did HE composed them also?

  • I love his soundtracks for the 1960s Fantastic Four too.

  • I once saw a clip on PBS of a full orchestra performing the JQ theme but have not been able to find a full orchestra recording online.

  • I want Hoyt Curtin Hanna-Barbera CD

  • I want Hoyt Curtin on cd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @barnsby66 Have you been able to get any of his music yet?

  • Always was a fan of Hoyt Curtin...especially after "Battle of the Planets"!

  • INCREDIBLE... thank you

  • hoyt was the shit!!! bar none...he composed the best, not some of the best, but the best shit i've ever heard!!!

  • I gotta join the crowd, I love Hoyt's music! My Dad and I loved watching all the 60's Hanna Barbera cartoons because of that unforgettable music! We still do! Long live Hoyt!

  • 5:43 - That little trumpet solo on the end credits of Jetson's is unforgettable

  • Shit yeah! Conte Candoli!

  • Hurt Curtain is unbelievable! His range is incredible. I can't believe how well he captures the mood of each cartoon for which he was writing.

The background tracks to the Super Friends are unbelievably cool!

  • THANKS So MUCH FOR THIS!

Hoyt Curtin is one of my all time faves and his music really made Saturday mornings rock and keep me going to this day!

  • Thank you for bringing the musical genious of Hoyt Curtin to light. He really wrote some incredible sound tracks to the Hanna Barbera cartoons of the 60's. His music really set the mood for all of the adventure in these cartoons. Hoyt ignored conventional (meaning boring) musical norms and really stepped out to compose some really fantastic music. If only there was a way to get his musical compositions on CD.

  • nice

  • Oh yeah, and The Jetsons - Incredible!

  • Thank you for posting this, his music was a great compliment to Quest, plus it's fun jazz.

  • Damn this guy was incredible!.

Many thanks for this great(and informative) video.

  • I think I've already enjoyed this documentary more than the last three movies I went to. Awesome work!

  • If you don't appreciate Hoyt Curtin's compositions, then you don't appreciate real music :-)

  • Excellent!!!

  • Hard to believe that this stuff was recorded in just a few sessions each. Nowadays they'd take 10 times as long and wouldn't sound any better than this.

  • Also..... if you listen really well....you can hear Battle Of the Planets in Challenge Of The Go-Bots too. ;) I hope Hoyt's family has seen this!

  • Battle Of The Planets music is one of the best things that Curtin ever did! He set the standard for future generations of animation music arrangers too! I am so sad that he has passed! This was a great video!

  • He did the intro of the Battle of the Planets too. Listen to that.
