I think it's one of the best Joplin's blues and one of the most tragic things. I've got it sung by Etta James in 2000s. Some monsters like Koko Taylor,Etta James, Taj Mahal ...Well done. They are great. Janis was unique. Uncomparable
I fully agree with James Gurley was melicharm1 beginnings of a style and psychedelic distortion effects, taking up a conspiracy between him and hendrix, just that he died and the media is disclosed is a pity our media be so, do not give a value to those who deserve Peter Albin, David Getz and Sam Andrews and god janis not lag behind others also are beautiful lol.
It was very sad. She had people, but it was a very different time from what you are going thru...
there were a lot of drugs, and drink and each person around her was young also, and facing the same situations...When she died, it was heartbreaking...
I was a young girl and she was just right there in front of me, I mean my hero.... what a singer.......................
I swear I just had an out of body experience. This shit literally touched my fuckin' soul! I bet her performances were the shit in person. If only, I were born earlier!
@melicharm1 Yeah, he complained about that & how they didn't get the attention for their arrangements and what not. Janis didn't write most of her songs, probably not even a third of them. She sang them great, but the band(s) should have gotten more credit. Sam Andrew too. He and James worked on that sublime solo in her cover of "Summertime". It totally makes the song.
Damn, was James Gurley great on lead guitar or what? This guy should have been recognized for his greatness far more than he ever was. Too bad Janis overshadowed this band with her vocals. .but this band was tight. The bass runs flat out rock. RIP James.
@kilts4u2 Well that was the problem, apparently prior to Janis joining the band James' guitar playing had been one of the main focal points. His playing was what set them apart. Then, as I'm sure lots of people will know Janis joined and it went from Big Brother & The Holding Company to Big Brother with Janis Joplin, and then they started getting introduced as Janis Joplin with Big Brother....pissed a few of them off as you can imagine. Not least James.

@kilts4u2 Well he was recognised. He was "it" prior to Janis joining the band. He was what set the band apart. Then Janis joined and it went from Big Brother and the Holding Company to BBHC with Janis Joplin, and then towards the end they'd be introduced as Janis Joplin with BBHC...pissed them all off a tad, not least James.

I saw her in Toledo. The police were making people sit down. She said from the stage that if the music made us want to dance then we ought to get up and dance. She said it was some trouble putting on these shows and we owed it to the music and the musicians to fkn dance when we were moved to.
@pancakespl You cannot compare the two. The Woodstock version is not Big Brother & the Holding Company. Once Janis went out on her own, with Sam, things started to go down hill. Just my opinion. Like you, I love all the versions. The only two other women that can sing this song are Big Moma Thorton, who wriote the song, & Etta James.
This is a real woman in the real World, (past) Who gave her heart & soul into all her performances. It pains me when ppl are critical of her because she was vunerable. Are not we all?
Where is the real emotion from present day singers/bands.?
I've notice a great many young ppl turning to older music in greater numbers, & loving it...even teenagers. This is a good trend & may save conventional music from the Abyss.
@Kristopful Janis is my fav female artist and I'm 29,long after she died. I became a fan when I was 16,I don't really remember how though but I have been a fan since. No one can come close. I was a teen when I became a fan I prefer older music for sure
@balto4 I only became a serious fan of Janis in the last two years...when I became conected too the internet, & i'm 53. People take for granted access to live shows...which we never had when I was younger. It makes me feel good that very young people are appreciating great music of the past & Janis is certainly among the greats. God rest her troubled & pained soul in peace.
I´m Sorry but Everybody Just Talks about Janis, What about the people Behind Her? , I feel the Guitar ´Player was way ahead of his Time when It comes to soloing also Listen to the Drummer or the bassist very tight band for the times and sound systems or pa´s available then , Man those Guys were Full Pro, EVERYONE in this Band was special One of a Kind not just the female.
@marcw6220 What happened was Big Brothers/Janis' manager did not want them to be filmed. So that is why her initial performance wasn't caught on camera. Finally he caved in and Janis was asked to come back and perform AGAIN so they could film it. I am glad they did :)
This song was written by Big Momma Thorton for Janis ,,please check out Big Momma performing this song. Janis Joplin does justice to this song ! I love it <3
So fatr ahead of her time!!! So misunderstood and so much to say. Nobody could sing a song the way Pearl did and nobody ever will. The best version of this song is definitely from the 67 Monterey Pop Festival. Check it out..
she is THE SOUL! What else you want to say about her?? She had soul and she gave soul! I know about the time there!! But believe: there will be no one like her!
OMG - watched the version from Monterey Pop festival - I believe the most intense live rock performance by a rock female vocalist - we need a 2010 version of the J woman
dont compare big mamas' and janis' version. ball and chain is a great song, that needed both renditions to get perfect. its just like "all along the watchtower", written by Bob Dylan, but Hendrix completed it to the theme song of a whole generation. In both cases its the combination of the two (^^) that makes it to the perfect stuff that it is.
YEAH!! this is the version ive been longing to own: Got bits of it on a BBC Documentary but wanted the full version-great post! I reckon Janis is "the girl who sang the blues and i asked her for some happy news" on Don Mcleans American pie....Scuse me while i light my spliff...
Hahaha you make me laugh. More like can YOU not read. :p I never mentioned any Brit. Whereas you said "i was thinking about that the other day....well about the british invasion." Who the hell could have realized you were speaking of something entirely different after basically saying you were thinking about what I said. :|
This girl (I"m still not sure if she was 15 or 1500 - my guess is that she was an extremely old soul trapped inside a typical Kansas-type body) will be among the immortals of rock. Her life was full of pain - perhaps that is one of the reasons we love her so much. People go through their daily lives and don't talk about the pain inside. Janis not only sung about it, she made it a classy, moving anthem.
You know this was written and originally performed by Big Mama Thornton. Janis just covered it. Also, Big Mama Thornton was also the writer and original performer of "Hound Dog". Yeah, not Elvis, Big Mama Thornton. And by the way, as much as I love Janis Joplin, this nor Elvis's "Hound Dog" have shit on Big Mama Thornton.

Oh, Lord, Lord, sittin’ down by my window,

Honey, that’s exactly what it felt like,
Honey, just dragging me down."
