My father always talked about seeing Ritchie Valens live in El Monte Legion Stadium back in '58... Always talked about how sad it was to hear it when Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly, and The Big Bopper died. Even 52 years later my dad still calls it music saddest day, that these music icons gone too soon, and too young!

February 3, 1959: A small-plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, killed three American rock and roll musicians: Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, as well as the pilot, Roger Peterson. The day was later called The Day the Music Died by Don McLean in his song "American Pie."
Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Big Bopper....Took the last train for the coast the day the music died. RIP. I Wish I go back in time and watch you guys play.
It's a sad song, I'll have to agree with myself on this one, even tho I don't care to play it...what for, it's not my typical tear jerker...for instance "A Boy Without a Girl", by Frankie Avalon or "And the Heavens Cried" by Ronnie Savoy, you know those songs where boy leaves girl or girl finds boy, yes those love songs of tragety or tears of joy.. This is not a love song & serves as a tragic reminder, of what can happen to anyone, and I don't want to hear again Mr. DJ.
February 3rd 1959 is a day that will live in infamy, just like the dates of December 7th 1941 & September 11th 2001. And let's not forget December 8th 1980, August 16th 1977 & June 25th 2009 as other infamous dates that we shall never forget for as long as any of us live.
yeah, that was a sad day. they were truly amazing. it must be true when they say only the good die young. so saaaad, and sooooo missed, now and always. may you truly be those 3 stars.
Not sure who sings this version but the song was written by Tommy Dee and famously performed by Edward Ray Cochran (Eddie Cochran) in 1960. Alas, he died not too long after himself. Rock N Roll lost some amazing talents in those early days.
I think this version of this song is by Dickie Lea and the teetones, (spelling may not be correct) I have the single in my collection but label a litle worn.
Quite sad that 3 guys about to reach the prime of their careers died so tragically. I feel especially bad for Ritchie and his family, he was just a kid and the obvious bread winner and it's all gone in 8 months. As for Buddy, he might have been the one to keep The Beatles from having all that massive success. He was on his way up. The Big Bopper would've been the white version of Fats Domino minus the piano. So sad, neither on of them was even 30.
Your all for getting he was just a baby! Trying to make a better life for his family! Well since now a days morals and values are lost in our so called civilized nation... wich this simple 17 year old kid held *high* that's what gave him *soul* his love for other people.....
No matter what age,Race, male female etc one can not help but think how sad 3 great stars died so young, they made so many even to this day by there music smile and happy, yet so many cry at the same time RIP.
No matter what age,Race, male female etc one can not help but think how sad 3 great stars died so young, they made so many even to this day by there music smile and happy, yet so many cry at the same time RIP
for those who are supersticious, ritchie was born on the 13....i just read an article that the band member that gave up his seat to JP jokingly said to buddy holly "hope your ol' plane crashes" after buddy holly told him "hope your ol' bus freezes"...how bad must he have felt after he found out the plane did crash..
I wouldnt doubt the jews did it....they had to destroy our culture with the beatles...then men would have stood up to this filth from Britain God Bless you guys.... we'll bring the 50's back
nowhere near as heartfelt as Eddie Cochran's original recording... in the end of eddie's version, especially the lines about buddy, you can literally hear him choking up! the story goes that as he finished recording the track, he stormed out of the studio, telling his producer that if the song was ever released, he would quit performing.. it didnt get a release till after eddie died.... so emotional
@gottaloveritchie Maybe you should have used Eddie Cochrans version of 3 stars to pay tribut to Richie , Buddy and J.P... Since it was Eddie who wrote the song. He was in a studio in England when he got the news of thier death's and he recorded it that day. but Eddie refused to let it be released. Sadly within a year he was also gone. to be with his friends. 5 years after Eddie death it was released to the fans
@daniellesutton1 As you seen it it "Three Stars" sung here by Tommy Dee. But it was written by Eddie Cochran. He was in a studio in London when he got the news of the plane crash. he wrote & recorded it that day. But refused to let it be released. Sadly April 17 1960 he also left us way to soon. in a car crash & 6 or 7 years after his death is was released to the public. as you see a few people also record a version of his song. MAY ALL THE ONE'S THAT LEFT US WAY TO SOON R.I.P FOREVER.
They say that the plane left the airport around one o'clock. So, 6 hours and a couple of minutes from now, 51 years ago, three of the greatest rock n roll stars, and a pilot died, in a plane crash over Clear Lake, Iowa...
The '50s rocked because of them and Elvis Presley! And yeah, music did die when we lost them...at least until the '80s (Michael Jackson, Simple Minds, Oingo Boingo, ect.).
The '60s and '70s (about 20 years) were PURE HELL for that reason.
Part 1: I was born 3/4/1944 so I have the experience. Music sucked in the '60s and '70s. I feel exactly like John Milner did in American Graffiti! Ever since Buddy Holly and the others died everything went downhill. In the '60s there was the Beach Boys bull****. Two things I couldn't stand were the hippies and the Acid music. That stupid funky Disco, bell-bottoms and shoes sucked too.
The '80s, however, kept it real just like the '50s.
Well...Acid Rock was mainly of the late '60s. It mostly had a high background sound. It was what the hippies listened to when they were getting high off of the drug "acid". You can hardly even hear the lyrics. A lot of the other songs from the '60s had that "Acid" feel to it (not the Beach Boys, Beatles and "Bubble Gum" music which I also don't like).
There were some decent Rock songs in the '70s hear and there but a lot of them still had that "funky" feel to it even though it wasn't Disco.
I know what Acid Rock is I was wondering what YOUR definition was cuz there were AWESOME bands in the 60's and 70's my favorite is THE WHO. but there were/are bands like BAD COMPANY, DEEP PURPLE, AEROSMITH, THE DOOBIE BROTHERS, FOGHAT, BACHMAN TURNER OVERDRIVE, ROLLING STONES, THE KINKS, YES, BOSTON, THE MOODY BLUES, MOLLY HATCHET, THE ALLMAN BROTHERS just to name a few. the 60's and 70's were filled with good bands and GREAT Rock and Roll.
I told you my definition of Acid in my comment: It is what it is and I don't like it. Don't get me wrong, there were a FEW decent bands like Queen in the late '70s but the theme song of That '70s Show sucks. There is some good in the '70s, yes (overall I don't like that era), but not in the '60s at all.
That's just the way I see things. You have your opinion and I have mine.
Part 2: Two of them are "I'll Stop the World and Melt With You" and "Don't You Forget About Me". I also like the song "Take My Breath Away" but I don't know if that's considered New Wave.
I'm not into the Metal and Psychedelic stuff though. And what do you mean by I have a weird way of music?
Like I said: The '60s have the "Acid" feel and '70s the "funky" feel. I can't stand "Disco Duck" and "Funky Town".
Part 1: I suppose the Beatles were a fairly decent band when they weren't participating in the Psychedelic/Acid Rock but they were still not in my taste of music.
I'll even admit that some of the New Wave from the '80s were weird such as Devo (but in a good and funny way). Unlike some of the other people from the '50s, overall I loved the '80s New Wave and regular Rock music from the '80s because like the '50s, it had real soul in it and some of it had a way of touching my heart.
Oh! Some of the songs by Rolling Stones are alright. I guess there is a little bit of good in the '60s but not enough to count. Once the hippies and Acid came in, the Rolling Stones were pretty much only in the background. There was only a glimpse of decency but that's all.
Part 2: When Buddy Holly and the others died, the music died with them (see name of video). Guys like MJ, Huey Lewis and the News, Devo and John Parr brought music back to life. MJ was the "Elvis Presley of the '80s" so to speak. Tina Turner even performed "Keep-a-Knockin" (1957). The '80s knew how to rock out. The "St. Elmo's Fire" song by John Parr touched me to the core. I didn't even think music would ever be good again since the '50s but I was blown away.
Hard to believe that over 50 years have come and gone since we lost Buddy holly,Richie Valens, and Jilles Perry Richardson(the big bopper)Just stop and think how much they all influenced rock and roll,Buddy once said in 1957 if it wasnt for Elvis none of us would be here.Think of how many people especially John Lennon and Paul McCartney were led into Rock because of Holly not to mention the British Band The Hollies just to mention a few.Take a look at todays country with Hollys influence.R.I.P.
Hummm . you were delivery newspaper's as was Don McLean. later wrote a song about this day... How Ironic and i'm sure you couldnt forget if you wanted to. Kinda the way I feel about the day the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane fell from the sky. I had seen them a few weeks before. all these are very sad days to the muzic world.... Why are people so rude on-line?? Humm I can only guess no home training or respect for themselves or there elder's. We can just hope 1 day that they will grow up.....
Does anybody remember VH1's Behind he Music "The Day The Music Died"? It was one of the most emotional and memorable episodes of the show. If anyone has it, I would like to see it posted.
You know, I love the music of the 50s. I grew up in the 80's, but after watching La Bamba, I became obsessed with Buddy and Richie. At the same time, all is not lost today. Musicians like Radiohead and a lot of other indepent type musicians are making some very interesting and original stuff, a lot of it is high quality. Unfortunately, unless you search for it, it seems Brittany Spears et al dominate the radio.
What also was so sad was that Buddy and The Big Bopper's wives were pregnant, although Maria (Buddy's wife) miscarried after his death, always wondered if it was because of the stress of Buddy's death.
Wow... What a sad day. They were so young. :(

Don't get me wrong, there were a FEW decent bands like Queen in the late '70s but the theme song of That '70s Show sucks. There is some good in the '70s, yes (overall I don't like that era), but not in the '60s at all.
That's just the way I see things. You have your opinion and I have mine.
ThePokefan100 2 years ago
You REALLY don't think there were any good bands in the 60's??
THE BEATLES, STONES, WHO, JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, MOODY BLUES, KINKS, DEEP PURPLE...just to name a few.
You don't think any of those bands are good? I know it's your opinion and you're welcome to it, but I have to say you have a weird view of music!

ThePokefan100 2 years ago
Part 1: I suppose the Beatles were a fairly decent band when they weren't participating in the Psychedelic/Acid Rock but they were still not in my taste of music.
I'll even admit that some of the New Wave from the '80s were weird such as Devo (but in a good and funny way). Unlike some of the other people from the '50s, overall I loved the '80s New Wave and regular Rock music from the '80s because like the '50s, it had real soul in it and some of it had a way of touching my heart.
ThePokefan100 2 years ago
Oh! Some of the songs by Rolling Stones are alright. I guess there is a little bit of good in the '60s but not enough to count. Once the hippies and Acid came in, the Rolling Stones were pretty much only in the background. There was only a glimpse of decency but that's all.
ThePokefan100 2 years ago
Oh! I forgot to say you are right about today's music, though. I'll give you that.
ThePokefan100 2 years ago
Part 2: When Buddy Holly and the others died, the music died with them (see name of video). Guys like MJ, Huey Lewis and the News, Devo and John Parr brought music back to life. MJ was the "Elvis Presley of the '80s" so to speak. Tina Turner even performed "Keep-a-Knockin" (1957). The '80s knew how to rock out. The "St. Elmo's Fire" song by John Parr touched me to the core. I didn't even think music would ever be good again since the '50s but I was blown away.
I think that explains it!

I was 15 when this happened. Yes I'm now old, I'm 66, but surely I can relate to this better than most.
Why are people on line so rude?
This was a big moment in my life and yes I am very old at 66.
People need to get a grip on their posts, there is no reason to be rude. You too will get old.

I will never forget this awful day. I was delivering newspapers and it was the headline. I still remember how sad and empty I felt.
Mau56 2 years ago 6
Hummm . you were delivery newspaper's as was Don McLean. later wrote a song about this day...

Unfortunately, unless you search for it, it seems Brittany Spears et al dominate the radio.
rezabladerunner 2 years ago
Radiohead is not making original music.. Listen to KARMA POLICE AND THEN TO THE BEALTES "SEXY SADIE.....

What also was so sad was that Buddy and The Big Bopper's wives were pregnant, although Maria (Buddy's wife) miscarried after his death, always wondered if it was because of the stress of Buddy's death.
