  • Just got news now that Ani'Ichi Miyagi Sensei passed away on Mon, 27 Apr 2009.

  • sanchin 'tension' is progressive, tension..

of course you can tense 'too much', becoming more like a stone statue than a strong human..

correct sanchin is not, unhealthy, generally or for the cardiac system..

fa jing is not separate from sanchin breathing but a less specifically emphasized part of sanchin breathing.. it manifests within the 'cough like' diaphragmatic contractions at kime..

many systems use/have used sanchin training way back in time, before okinawa..

  • @shisoshin Please tell me where i can find more information about the chi circulations and mind training for this art

  • much, the floor where he practice was said to remain warm long after he ended practice. Lastly EVERY TIME YOU EXERCISE AND BREATHE YOU ARE TENSING AND BREATHING AT THE SAME TIME SO ACCORDING TO WHAT KORYOKOHA IS SAYING ALL EXERCISE KILLS! Forgive me "screaming" but no one seems to have noticed that flaw in his logic. Every time you exercise, you tense and breathe so by that logic, apparently working out will lead to an early grave.

  • To help settle this little exchange; 1) Sanchin Kata does not say to hold the breath. 2) Breathing in while tensing the muscles is something many bodybuilders do all the time, and I'm sorry but, tensing while holding a weight or actively resisting is arguably "worse" than this. Bodybuilders breathe and tense all the time and assuming they don't juice, most live well past 80. 3) Higashiona sensei, founder of Goju Ryu, died at a ripe old age, and his feet were said to tense the ground so

  • I have also heard about the potential harm from Sanchin training. I read an article by a student of George Mattson, who is a Cardiac Surgeon, I believe. He analyzed it and concluded that the fault is in the way people are breathing. You must not hold the breath and you must not tense the muscles too much. It made sense to me but I would like to see studies done. Miyagi Sensei said he should have learned soft Sanchin from Shuri to preserve his life, right before he passed away.

  • First of all its untrue because Miyagi Chojun Sensei did not say that before he died. Secondly saying all Goju-practitioners died early deaths is also rubbish since most of that generation suffered greatly during the war from mal-nutrition etc. Present day practitioners like Aniichi Miyagi, Higaonna Morio, Koshin Iha, Shuichi Arakagi are all quite old and healthy. Miyagi never had many real students anyway and they all lived beyond 80 except for Shinzato who was killed by a bomb.

  • Of his dozen students who learnt and kept at karate throughout their lives, the great majority lived beyond 80.Chojun Miyagi had unhealty eating habits as he loved to eat fatty meat, and plus the stress of losing all his children during the war,his best student (Shinzato) and years of written works on karate (burnt),the stress of it all caused his heart-failure,not Sanchin kata. If you learnt some Yong Chun White Crane that's your misfortune, but spreading unfounded rumours here is really vile.

  • The unfounded rumor came from an interview I read of Seikichi Toguchi. Heard of him?? In it he said that Miyagi's daughter overheard him telling that to her mother. If you have a problem with it, take it up with Seikichi Toguchi when you drop dead! I am not arguing the matter, just posting what I came up with in my research of it. Learning White Crane is not a misfortune, it is a blessing. You need to loosen your obi and relax.

  • No thanks, I had better ask Miyagi himself when I drop dead.

  • i couldnt agree more

  • The art of flexion or Haunchi Do can make this useless. Flexion is an advanced form of

sanchin that is also practiced in the art of Kenpo.

  • the worrysome thing about this kind of practice, is that many karateka end up suffering from severe organ damange in the long run. impact training is not good for a person's health. Shaolin iron shirt training, the real thing, is actually more healthful, and a lot more benign.

  • Sure, and you also get cancer and haemorrhoids from sanchin training and shime. LOL

  • For those looking for "healthy" and "benign" "martial arts", please don't try traditional karate. Karate was not designed for "benign" purposes for the faint-hearted in the first place. Infact, forget about doing this "Shaolin-Ironshirt-the-real-thing"-whatever that is, and take-up Taichi and Yoga instead ;P

  • I also study Yong Chun White Crane and the Sanchin is very different. Emphasis is on releasing the breath using Fa Jing. I teach my Goju Ryu like this now, using White Crane breathing instead of Okinawan breathing. If you notice, the Naha Te practitioners all died early deaths, with the exception of Eiichi Miyazato. When my Sensei went to see him, he was told by him not to tense in Sanchin too much. It all makes sense.

  • Are you just quoting martial arts gossip? My instructors always told me about the potential harm that may come from a bad sanchin, but they always told me also about the benefits of a good sanchin.

  • So, you just need a good instructor, I guess.

  • With every breath you take, it destroys cells. We are all dieing. Live your life to the fullest, don't fear death. Appreciate your life, appreciate physical and emotional pain... but seek happiness and truth. A dead man can't appreciate pain, you should enjoy embrace it.

  • How very zen of you. Although im sure any real zen master would tell you to shuttup and have a nap.

  • I don't think a Zen master would be for or against my ideas.

  • This is veary similar to Shaolin iron shirt training. the core of sanchin is moving the chi to the part of the body being tested.also body conditioning is a larg part of goju karate

  • Im not a Karate guy, I did a little Kung-Fu but now I'm a MMA type martial artist. From my limited knowledge, this style of Karate came from China. This style is similar to "Hung-Gar" Kung-Fu and "Iron Wire" form. A lot of Isometrics involved and deep breathing exersice.

  • Muy bueno Mario...nunca te olvidarás de este presente que te dieron los dos maestros de Okinawa Goju-Ryu, y nada menos que el Budo Sai de Okinawa

  • yeah but isshinryu got it from goju :P

  • nice. Thanks for posting.

  • Wow. It's rare to see videos of Miyagi Anichi Sensei anymore!

  • a question, why do uechi, and goju practitioners always take their shirts off to test their sanchin?

  • So you can see if the practitioner is actually apply the proper muscle tension and breathing. Especially in a larger class, you can look around and see who is 'slacking off'. 8-)

  • Boy, did that one ever bring back memories from my green belt days.

  • Dave, I'm surprised that you can remember back then!! 8-)
