  • Shobayashi-ryu is almost the same nice kata

  • Awesome footage. thx for posting this

  • @cantakenomore1 Thanks, 1 of my favorite series.

  • Thanks for uploading. That's a great bit of history captured there. We practised these kata's in our dojo exactly the same way today, 50 years on. A priviledge to watch. Again, thank you.

  • Great Video! This goes right into the favorites list.

  • @witri9 Happy to oblige!

  • They Were GREAT! Beautiful Shuri Te

  • That old school Kusanku was off the hook!!!!!

It was nice to see how they did it back in the day. We do it the same way with 2 or 3 moves different but basically its the same.

    This is s great video!!

    Thanks.

  • @Kinghercules If u like the older version of kata check out the Kyudokan version that stems from Chibana>Yuchoku Higa>Minoru Higa:

    brNOmqDWJkk

You may see a few differences. It is done slow speed.

  • @NewEnglandBudo if you check out brNOmqDWJkk first thing you will see is the difference in quality of performance. Unfortunately.

  • @ennot That is Gerardo Sensei who belongs to the Kyudokan Association of Minoru Higa Hanshi as I do. He is a big man over 6 feet tall. I see the Matsubayashi kata and the older version done by the Kyudokan as very different kata. I tried to find another Kyudokan dojo kata, but did not find any. Here is Indishe Sensei performing Kusanku Sho. eEgAb0euajQ

  • @ennot BTW, the transfer from the old video tape to the VHS version causes the kata performance to be a lot faster than it actually is ;-(

  • Thank you for posting this.

  • no way the first Kata they do is Fudagata itch (begginer kata number one) I remembe rlearning it as a white belt at empire stat Karate

  • @GreatSirZachary This version of Fukyu gata dai ichi was created by Nagamine Sensei and is widely used in many Goju Ryu & Shorin Ryu dojo. I looked up Empire State Karate dojo and it purports to be a "Matsubayashi " dojo & "Matsamura" dojo. If the above Master created the kata, I fall on his side as to be correct. BTW, you even typed the name incorrectly.

  • @NewEnglandBudo excellent, and yes u r 100% correct! My grandfather trained with GM Nagamine back in 1945 thru 1947 while Kadena Air base was being built and he told me, before he died, that he was NOT taught those two katas. He learned all the orginal 15 katas however and taught them to my father who then taught me and I will teach my little girl when she is ready.

And my Grandfather was given a shodan but was NOT given a teaching menkyo. But whatever.

  • @jiggahippo Some excellent history there!

  • its all kung fu to me =)

Okinawins are short lil stocky people even by Asain standards.

There Hung Gar reflects that and its refinement due to survival.

All the styles are jus branches to the tree....I'd like to see somthing new.

we already can hit and defend as one...most martail artist today are jus hobbyist.

    the others,they alreadly know =)

  • I learned so much in the first few minutes of watching this....amazing demo of kata. I will study this for a long time. Arigato Gozaimasu. Cocoa Beach FL Dojo.

  • thats so good to see, thanks a lot !

Althoug Iam a bit sad, Why is the Rohai Kata cut out.

  • Excellent video thanks

  • Is Jewel video, excellent

  • Thankful2one, the kata is actually just called Kusanku. There is no Kusanku Sho & Dai in Matsubayashi. In fact, Nagamine Shoshin told us in an interview in 1986 that this version was actually called Chatan Yara Kusanku.

  • iso é verdadeiro karate

  • These are really great! and are helping me immensely with the performance of my kata.

  • I'll admit it; Still, as fond as I am of the Korean techniques I've learned, I'd like to learn something closer to home. I'm tempted to try Shotokan, but I've been told it's a very intricate, very difficult style at times.

  • Hah, LOL. If that scares you then definitely stay away from Shotokan's historical beginnings of Naha & Shuri TE (hands) which are Okinawan Shorin Ryu, Goju ryu who kata are much more complicated that the linear Shotokan

  • Nice stuff. I'm into Tang Soo Do, and have been looling for something a little bit more challenging & closer to my heritage (I'm half-japanese).

  • The Okinawans are very proud people and many of the older generation do not call themselves "Japanese" due to the Battle of Okinawa and the destruction brought down on Okinawa due to the war.

  • Thats because they consider themsleves chinese. After the chinese imperial courts recognized them back in the 1400 as a state they used all the chinese characters and spoke Contonieze and Manderian, not japanese.

  • This is incorrect info. Okinawans spoke Uchinaguchi (Okinawan language) and Japanese to a lesser extent. Some envoys and traders spoke better Japanese or Chinese due to their exposure trading with these groups. Okinawa was an independent government governed by its own King until 1625 when the Satsuma clan from Japan took over. They eventually kidnapped the Okinawan king to Japan to control the Okinawan populace!

  • @NewEnglandBudo i learned something, thx my friend. I saw a video that said they, opkinawans, could only speak about karate in their native tounge in order to truly undertsand the tec h. I guess I should learn to speak Uchiaguchi.

  • @jiggahippo okinwans never considered themselves chinese.

  • I disagree. I trained with Shoshin Nagamine for 3 years back in 1979, this is what he teachings taught. Most of what NewEglandBudo says is very true but most of the Okinawans were in fact chinese.

  • @jiggahippo The Okinawan people are a race of their own. Yes, perhaps because of Japanese & Chinese relationships their were multi-cultural off spring but to say that most Okinawans are Chinese is just wrong.

  • @jiggahippo They didn't speak Japanese, they spoke their own language. So, they just up and started speaking two dialects and writing in another language?

  • @IEKUKATAKA yes they spoke Uchiaguchi as well as Manderian chinese and used the characters of the chinese. Do urself a favor and read all the comments as well as a history book or have first hand knowldge as I do then come talk to me, thanks.

  • @jiggahippo Be ok If I just ignore you as being ignorant?

  • @IEKUKATAKA sure u can, I have no problem with ignorant people such as ur self, hell I need some one to pick up my trash and supersize my fries!

  • @jigga hippo You probably do, I sense that is who you are, conceded. Your entire delivery is about you, nothing else. You speak of others as a ruse yet it is about your ego, who you are, what you know, making it known to others. "Pick up your trash, supersize your fries" are just indicators of what you think of others as relative to yourself. What you are is a sham, an egotistical want to be. You really don't like yourself and need others to hide it. A mime, a phoney, a pseudo life on delusion.

  • @IEKUKATAKA wow! ur so insightful about nothing. If I accept what u say then u must also accept this for urself. I can tell u didnt read any of my post with Newenglandbudo and u simply wanted to be a bully so I, enreturned, responded the same. Fine u win and ur the better person, feel better? I hope.

  • @TMRonin85 If you're looking into something japanese, I would suggest kyokushin karate and then Jiujitsu.

  • does anyone know of any old videos of james wax??

  • I would also like to see early James Wax, Frank Grant, Gary Tikten, and Bob Yarnell clips if any one can can post. All (or most) modern Matsubayashi in America has been handed down by these first students, we owe them thanks and giri for what we cannot repay, only learn earnestly, and pass on to the best of our abilities.

  • Does anyone know the kata at the very end where they are dropping down so low to the floor? Great vid, thanks.

  • It's called Kusanku dai.

  • Excellent video thanks for posting. Is the movement from a deep stance to a shallow stance a typical aspect of shorin or this style of shorin?

  • It is atypical of all the Shorin styles. Matsamura Seito is a bit more higher than the others but during Kusanku they drop into a lower stance.

  • good stuff. forgot I knew those katas. Thanks

  • Historic. Thx for uploading.

  • en la 1ra parte han segido el mismo orden de katas q yo tbn he seguido en mi practica en shito ryu. empezando con ten no kata y chi no kata y luego siguiendo con los katas heian (pinan). muy interesante y valiosa pelicula

  • I'm currently a Matsubayashi student and this was awesome to see. Thanks for posting! On an unrelated note, does anyone know what that weird dog/bird looking thing at 1:25 is?

  • I believe that to be a kami that is outside the location where it was filmed.

  • Cool, thanks.

  • It looks to me like a Japanese Chin dog with illuminated eyes, old film.

  • strong solid karate of the orthodox sort. still around, but not so easy to learn

  • Pity the copy has suffered over the years, the quality of the karate still comes thru! Thanks for posting, I got a lot out ok it

  • Yes, it was originally an 8mm film that was transfered to VHS in the 80's and I recently transfered it to DVD.

  • this is really great footage. thanks so much for posting it! Gambatte

  • Good stuff.

Historical interest and practical value to karateka.

    Thanks for posting.

  • do you have any good videos or eihachi ota sensei? or even matsuda sensei (formerly of shorinkan i think)

  • I only have the Ota tape that was distributed a few years ago. Sorry, nothing of Matsuda Sensei.

  • Pretty cool vid. Thanks for uploading NEB.

  • NEB, wow! just amazing video! Thank you for posting it. All I can say about contracts is, do not sign one

for three or four years. One year is fine. I do not like tadashi "hollywood" yamashita too, he teaches a watered down version of Kobayashi Shorin ryu and he is inventing a new style called Suikendo Crap!. Matsubayashi RULES! NEB you rock!

  • 07ATF in a way is right, Tadashi Yamashita is local and he has 3 dojos in Temecula California and around the world. If a person is suffering, help them out and maybe give them a break. NEB, thank you for the awesome vids. 07ATF, are you deploying soon? Just watch your six and come home safe.

  • NewEnglandBudo, great video tahnks, I agree with 07ATF, one of yamashiata's student suffered a financial and medical problems and he kindly ask if he can be releaseed from his contract until he can recover and they said no. I feel that they should have helped him. But they only care about the money and not the student. Nothing wrong with contracts, just help when someone is in need.

  • Was is Yamashita himself, or his billing people, or one of his student's dojo? Let's find out who is to blame. Unfortunately, if you had a gym membership would they have helped you out? I think not....sad facts of life.

  • I speak for all when I say this. I agree and you are right NEB. How long have you been practicing Budo? and do you still enjoy it? Thanks again for your honest opinion. I wish the best.

  • 35 years and going, yes I still enjoy Budo. I empathize with the student that had medical problems, but I shake my head when people do not think about personal budget, etc. when they sign contracts. The onus is put on them. I starved for too many years b/c I listened to "I'll pay you tomorrow!"

  • Well said and I wish you more years in the arts. I am currently studying Kenjutsu and Aikijustu and Shotokan. Good luck you and God bless. I hope to meet you someday. My wife and I never visited NE before :)

  • 'Karate Ni Sente', Karate starts with courtesy.

  • Mr. 5950231, I am sorry but I do not have Respect for tadashi"hollywood"yamashita. I feel he ruined shorin ryu. I like Matsubayashi, Shobayashi, Matsumura and other form of Shorin ryu but not yamashita. He is a big money hungry, contract signing bastard. He said he is Okinawan but he is not! Love this video and thank you NewEnglandBudo! yamashita ruined Kobayashi

    Shorin Ryu!

  • Why is it improper for martial artist who are professionals to have people sign contracts? Other profs. have people sign contracts in other fields? Know how many of my old students said, "I pay you tomorrow?" You don't pay for classes in Okinawa? Let me know where, so I can train there!! 8-)

  • i just wish i could download such a great thing of our past

  • No in the Matsubayashi series that would be one of Nagamine Sensei's group. More to come, next week.

  • I'm looking forward to it! Thank You

  • Hello,Was this an inter dojo demonstration? The katas are great! It's like watching "The Essence of Okinawan Karate-do" come to life.

  • No, it was a demo that Nagamine Sensei put together for some visiting 'Gaijin'! Did you see all 3 parts?

  • I thought the film had been edited to include translations between takes. I saw all three parts, and it is refreshing to see traditional budo being practiced, lately I've read/seen so many bunkai interpretations, from the outrageous to the inane,I'm glad that videos like this can preserve the tradition. I especialy enjoyed the sai demo! Thanks for your reply.

  • Check out the older Goju Ryu of Higaonna & Chinen that I have on the service.

  • Wow, you really have quite a collection. I'm not very familiar with GoJu-ryu,but I can appreciate Sensei Chinens form. As with the Shorin-ryu video series, I enjoyed the KoBudo demo (sai v. bo), is that Sensei Yamashita?

  • No, I believe that this may have been made for a certain group of gaijin after an event.
