Gee...SMH...guess some of yall don't know he is the originator of this style of playing on electric bass all because he thought it was going to be temporary. He thought he would go back to playing guitar.
All I can say is 'pure genius!' Graham is one of the greatest bass players that ever lived! Looking at this video, makes me want to learn how to slap a bass guitar.
@mrbeowulf138 Collegehumor says playing guitar well enough to get laid, and they have other instructional DVD´s wich contains PLaying the bass and don´t get laid XD, funny as hell just kidding Bass is for awesome relaxed people.
Sometimes I feel the Bass Guitar is underrated in guitar society. If I had to choose I'd probably choose a good 4 String Bass and learn on that... Plus the Deep Tone of the Bass sound badass! I like 6 String Rhythm Guitars but I find them not really my style and I prefer to slap something around when I'm listening to Metal anyway...
@rafamine1995 'cause he's not a bassist, he's a true musictian.most of bassists are boring believe me. I am one and i try not to bore myself. Frank Zappa once said "bassist are failed guitarists" hahaha
@TheStressBalls stop trying to insult. I'm not talking about yo momma, I'm talking about Flea. Why you so sensitive? No, Flea pioneered nothing, not if you are from my neighborhood. Maybe in yours Flea is some special anomaly. Most of the Brothers playing bass in my hood can do what Flea does and much much more.
@TheStressBalls Flea didn't pioneer anything, per say, he improved on what Graham started. He's one of the best examples of what innovation means in music.
But Graham was the one who pioneered this technique. Flea just made it faster. That's not to say he's not a great bassist, but pioneer he is not.
@ThePsychoMike Graham pioneered the technique, but I think Flea was also a pioneer in a different sense. Flea was really one of the best at combining funky slap bass with rock, which is what brought him to fame.
@TheStressBalls It's still innovation. Not pioneering. Graham created the technique, Flea expanded upon it, as did many of the other bassists to come after him. Think of it this way: Graham blazed the trail. Flea and everybody else who uses the Thump-Plunk technique are paving the road behind him.
@ThePsychoMike I agree with what you say. but you could also think of it in a different sense. Graham pioneered slapping and popping, but Flea pioneered the funk-rock playing style. I guess it doesn't really matter, they are both great musicians.
somewhere along the line people tossed this aside for the likes of such "musicians" as lady gaga, and they wonder why the world is supposed to end in 2012
From what I have researched, Larry Graham is the inventor of the slap bass technique. He was a teenager playing bass accompanying his mother who was playing piano and their lack of a drummer inspired him to use a percussive attack which he evolved to the slap bass technique that is used world wide.
Oh my God that was amazing. I'm sorry to all of you that have known this guy for quite some time, but I'm just know, as of today, learning what awesome talent he has. MAN!!!!! THIS is the guy behind Sly and the Family Stone's "If You Want Me To Stay" bass line???? Jesus!
This man is the innovator and creator of this style back in the 60's with Sly and the Family Stone. Listen to some of those songs and you can hear him slapping and plucking. I saw him live and he explained how he came up with it. He wanted drums but his mom couldn't afford any. So he had an old guitar, and since he wanted drums so badly, he devised a way to get a beat on the guitar while playing it. Hence, the style we see. I study him a lot. Awesome skills!!!
