  • Some of this footage had to be remade. I remember because in 1984 we got some free tickets for a concert which was in Birmingham UK, and we were told it was for 'extras' to be added to this video 'Arena' which was unfinished. I don't know why they did that or what went wrong with some of the original footage, but obviously in some parts there must be some UK clips added in. I don't think that's mentioned on the Video though, but then i wouldn't know because I have never seen it.

  • my first concert was duran duran 7 & the ragged tiger tour... seattle 1984

  • Halle Berry was there 3:00

  • Never seen arena. But I love it

  • The gadget with the question mark on it was actually an iPhone. I had to invent a time machine to go see this concert live.

  • 3:17 the girl crying behind, does anybody knows her? i'm thinking about her from 1985 ...

  • Great video! Duran rulez!

  • this video and all its content should be dump in the same land fill that the atari 2600 game ET was put in " what a piece of junk." ? "she'll make mach 5 but she's got it where it counts I made a few mods myself but were in a rush so if you'llget on board we can get out of here".

  • YEA AND I CAN SEE MYSELF IN THE CROWD ALSO!!!!!

  • Yes, The Reflex video was filmed at the Maple Leaf Gardens venue in Toronto, Canada.

This was also used in the Duran Duran film 'Arena' but was an extended version.

DD were music video pioneers. The Reflex video & Arena were directed by Russell Mulchay an Australian film director.

  • Yes. The Oracle Arena in Oakland, California is where this footage was filmed. (It was just known as the Oakland Coliseum back in '84). The whole of 'As The Lights Go Down' concert film was filmed there.

I don't know if this film exists on VHS or DVD to buy or not - I've never seen one but it was broadcast on TV in the UK around Christmas time 1984 on late night ITV station.

It was used for the 'Arena' film staring Milo O'Shea as the Dr Duran Duran character from the 60's film 'Barbarella'

  • @thirdpirate Theres a dvd for this, it was released somewhere around 03 or 04..

  • wow, their star was high then, i don't think people now days realise how huge they were. they were being called the fab 5, the greatest band since the beatles, for a while at least

  • Once you have heard the slightly mournful dystopian jazz section near the end, which is in this version, and luckily, in the version on the Arena album, only with it included can the whole song ever be right. Which means, the original single, without it, isn't so good and sounds wrong. It's similar with Planet Earth and The Reflex - they added extra spice to songs after first releasing them in more bland forms then left sounding too bland in hindsight. What was this caution all about?

  • I worked for quite a bit with one of their -at the time- producers, ...beautiful man, Colin Thurston... And met another of their producers from the time, too... And was told they were after a more 'punk' sound, after the 'softness' of Rio. Hence they commissioned "Is There Something', to the new guy, as his first job, to rework.

  • such a loaded question!!!!!!

  • I saw them at the Brighton Centre in England and they were brilliant.I nearly fainted :)

  • THE BEST LIVE!!!!!

  • BEST CONCERT EVER !!!

  • I saw them in early 84 in Austin, TX...I remember being starstuck and in awe..I thought it was a wonderful concert. John Taylor was simply gorgeous and Andy was so full of energy (my mom liked him the most) and Roger's drumming was superb...I still have the concert T-shirt actually..

  • See, even now years later they affect me. I meant to say "starstruck"..

  • ok, you are one of the luckiest people in the world getting to see them in person!!!*mumbles* and I wasnt even born yet...

  • lol XD i wasnt born until 1993 XDD

  • I mean 1:40

  • I love the part at 3:40 when john sings "that will make you come my way!"

  • Interesting, did Nick really used Fairlight computer onstage?

  • If there is a favorite of all of my favorites, this is it! I am lovin' all of the JT footage in this video. THANK YOU!!!

  • I was only nine when Duranmanina hit North America and remember the comparisons people made to the beatles.

  • LOL...I WISH!!!! Alas I wouldve only been 11 or 12 at the time of the concert. HIIIGHLY doubt my mother would let me attend. =)

  • It was filmed at the Oakland Coliseum....I dont know if they've changed the name since.

    Love the video.

  • There are A LOT of girls from near Oakland in that arena!

  • Oh my god. I have this kickass concert on a crappy VHS and i'm still watching it after 20 years.. Amazing show.

Simon was my first love when i was 5.:)

  • Yes this was filmed in Oakland, CA...not sure of the name of the venue though

  • I don't remember the name of the arena in Okland, CA. where they played it was a long time ago. The video for The Reflex was shot at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, in March 1984. They filmed some of the closeup footage in the arena that afternoon without an audience, and the rest was filmed live during that evening's concert. That sort of explains the heavy hair spray and lack of sweat when seeing them close up in the video.

  • Wow... I hate to say this but alot of their live performances aren't too good, but this one's great!

  • I was 17 Yrs old when I saw them at this concert. I am 41 now. I went to the shows at Oakland, CA. Toronto, ON. And NY NY in 1984. I am not in the video, but do remember the filming taking place at the Oakland show. The screaming was so loud, you could barely hear the music. I have seen Duran Duran 24 times total and would say this was the best concert of them all.

  • They're like wearing basically exercise clothes... Imagine the money for some sweat!

  • All these comments are so juicy and good! I love the band and the guitarists with the jump. I really love John!

  • The cool young boy with the sunglasses in the beginning is my husband. I can't believe we found this video here!

  • really? that's awesome :-)

I love the way Nick looks in that top hat. I really love when he wears top hats lol

  • it is not a top hat

  • Tell us more!

  • @rzdc that lucky sob :)))

  • @rzdc "cool" is subjective... i guess the in crowd and good looking people might slightly disagree with you

  • Thid clip is from de "ARENA" video, recorded around the world, good stuff!!

  • no it isnt

  • That alien kid is U L T R A COOOOOOL!
