Yup! You have... BUT now that you've heard John, you are in for a real treat. I recomend you buy ANY cd's of his you find, NONE of them are anything less than deffinite buys, ENJOY!!!
Couldn't disagree more, man. John has great respect for the songs he's playing and the lineage of players that he's following. If you want slow playing with great melody, listen to Jim Hall. The rest of us will listen to John and enjoy it!
I agree. I prefer older musicians generally and John is one of the few modern players that I truly enjoy listening to because I can hear so much of jazz history in his playing.
The best version of I Got Rythm ever. I never get bored of this. Man Pizzarelli rules so much... The fact that he had the pick in his mouth makes this even more amazing. GREAT GREAT GREAAAAT VIDEO.
That's some amazing scat singing there, granted he's not playing as fast as many play these licks, nonetheless keeping up vocally with his fingers without missing any notes during the solos has got to be rough.
Played for years with his dad Bucky (John Sr.) Though Bucky doesnt sing, the playing is identical. John Jr. studied at the feet of the master. Bucky is 85 years young and still going strong.....Plays on lots of John Jr.'s albums.
"Why all these fools are tryin' always to play the same licks that Bird, Dizzy and me have already played long time ago, don't they have anything new ?!" Miles Davis
the 7 string adds a really nice warmth to it, the scatting + the playing is so ridiculously good and the chord soloing is so fricken cool and unbelievably clean. Most importantly, the music sounds great and it swings! Ok enough compliments! Just listen and enjoy.
that 7th string got me mad x) i cant 'get' his arrangement of this song and i would like a lot... to try to understand whats happening... usualy we learn a lot borrowing stuff xP
2. Why must one be able to do something better than another person in order to comment or criticise it. Can't an ordinary person without a special talent make an honest and accurate judgement?
I mean nothing negative. I am a musician myself and think that this performance of John Pizzarelli is amazing. Your misunderstaqnding of my comment will be caused by my bad English as a Dutchman.
Any good improviser sings in the mind, the lines being invented. I agree, singing what you are playing, compared to singing counter melody, might be easy. But man that was NOT easy. It has to come naturally. The guy is a wizard.
i think in the running part of his solo, hes singing what hes playing as well. that or theres something going on with the mic, but i see his mouth moving. If he's singing the part as well thats incredible, because first of all, what hes playing is hard! then, he has to actually play what hes singing, and that takes talent and lots of it
Boognish; Thanks for your critical analysis. I can tell from your comment that you've studied music extensively--more than you've studied capitalization and punctuation, anyway--and that your future is clearly that of a music critic. If only others on YouTube could analyze things with your clarity and wit.
JimThayer: well,, your comment is just as dumb. claiming he is the MOST talented.. don't get me wrong, he is totally awesome, but there are a lot others just as awesome and talented.
Imagine at an audition where the band leader says "I want you to play the intro bridge exactly like this" umm, I'd probably stick with my temp job a little longer.
the pick's not in his mouth, it's pinched between his index and middle finger---he just does that little swipe at his face to readjust it for soloing. Pizzarelli rules.
John Pizzarelli is AMAZING! We met him once after a concert and, since I didn't have a camera on us, he drew me a self-portrait caricature to remember him by! Very friendly guy :)

This guys great...
Except for the fact that he's playing at such a fast tempo the melody just turns to shit.
This is what is wrong with 90% of the jazz players today.
Monster technique with zero respect for the melody.
