I finally understand what this song means at 35. I used to listen to it (and loved it) in my 20s, but I was too young and naive to know why you (especially if you're female) should 'keep your hand wide open' when seeking love... you can't lose a love that never belonged to you in the first place.

Am I the only one who likes newer Abbey the best (Abbey Sings Abbey, Wholly Earth, etc.)? That stuff is *raw* - in an awesome way. I also really like newer Sarah Vaughan. Both vocalists had/have voices that developed in really cool ways as they got/have gotten older.

If you love her music, you'll definently appreciate her acting...Look for the movie "Nothing But a man" which was made in the 60's def one my favorite flicks from the and there's another one where she played opposite of sidney poiter as a house keeper he fell in love with and in this ine she worked for archie bunker. Sidney had a underground casino on a 18 wheel truck as his enterprise. Very nice chick flixs. She's definently accomplished in both acting and as an artist....Chk out the movie

How right you are! 'Nothing but a man' is one of a few films that brings tears to my eyes every time I see it. I first saw it back in the early 80's (or was it late 70's) when it aired on PBS. I found it on DVD 4 years ago and bought it. It has lots of 'extras' including singing performances by Abbey. Well worth the $20 price ... a keeper!
