I finally understand what this song means at 35. I used to listen to it (and loved it) in my 20s, but I was too young and naive to know why you (especially if you're female) should 'keep your hand wide open' when seeking love... you can't lose a love that never belonged to you in the first place.
A heartbreaking lyric - that remains positive! She was a genius. Sort of a modern day Billie Holiday. Seeing her live was an moving experience I will never forget. Definitive jazz.. A great musician. A great songwriter. She had few peers. Quite a lady. R.I,P,
Hey, I’m a young artist, & I would really appreciate it if everyone would check out my cover of Michael Bublé’s “You’re Nobody till Somebody Loves You.” Although I’m knowledgeable that Michael Bublé was not the first to record the song, my version was inspired by his rendition, nonetheless. I promise you that you will not regret giving my version of the song a listen, & it will truly knock you off of your feet! So please listen & enjoy! Thanks!
Throw it away...just throw it away <3 <3 <3 this song & try 2 make it part of my daily living...give <3 away-dont worry about if it is returned as what is not returned by those u give it 2-it STILL comes bk 2 U!!!!
I think about the life I live I think about the life I live A figure made of clay And think about the things I lost The things I gave away And when I'm in a certain mood I search the house and look One night I found these magic words In a magic book Throw it away Throw it away Give your love, live your life Each and every day And keep your hand wide open Let the sun shine through 'Cause you can never lose a thing If it belongs to you
Dammit I just discovered her music today...no lie...not because of her death...but I was turning through a Jazz encyclopedia and decided to look her and was blown away by her voice...and then I click over to Google news and she just died...man...
I friend of mine told me Ms Abbey passed away... what a beautiful voice..
Anna Marie Wooldridge (August 6, 1930 – August 14, 2010),[1] better known by her stage name Abbey Lincoln, was a jazz vocalist, songwriter, and actress. Lincoln was unusual in that she wrote and performed her own compositions, expanding the expectations of jazz audiences.
Abbey's "A Turtle's Dream" is one of mine all time favorite Jazz CD. What a beautiful soothing voice! So long Abbey. The world is more beautiful because of you.
She gave us so much. Sometimes I thought I was her, sometimes i thought she was me. If I could sing i would sing Abby's songs to others. My children were raised hearing her voice and magical musical arrangements through the good and bad times.
Am I the only one who likes newer Abbey the best (Abbey Sings Abbey, Wholly Earth, etc.)? That stuff is *raw* - in an awesome way. I also really like newer Sarah Vaughan. Both vocalists had/have voices that developed in really cool ways as they got/have gotten older.
it is absolutely indescribable the feeling I get when I hear a beautiful voice, phenomenal lyrics, and great instruments together... this is what heaven must feel like... and that may be understating how this make me feel...
RT: asweetnightmare - It's not a book you'll find in the library or at a bookstore. You'll find it in yourself. Listen to the lyrics. You'll find it, if you really want to~
If you love her music, you'll definently appreciate her acting...Look for the movie "Nothing But a man" which was made in the 60's def one my favorite flicks from the and there's another one where she played opposite of sidney poiter as a house keeper he fell in love with and in this ine she worked for archie bunker. Sidney had a underground casino on a 18 wheel truck as his enterprise. Very nice chick flixs. She's definently accomplished in both acting and as an artist....Chk out the movie
How right you are! 'Nothing but a man' is one of a few films that brings tears to my eyes every time I see it. I first saw it back in the early 80's (or was it late 70's) when it aired on PBS. I found it on DVD 4 years ago and bought it. It has lots of 'extras' including singing performances by Abbey. Well worth the $20 price ... a keeper!
I totally agree with you, Yapostadodat ... I can't add anything ... I just listen to this poignant song ... Thank both of you, ianfalland, and especially Abbey ...
