@tobias3211 Amazing bro and you did a great job. Please do not listen to others on here who think they know something. Truth is they don't have any proof to even show that they have ever trained a day in their life. Many of them are fanatics and watch to many movies. Again thank you for sharing and you did an awesome job.
wow,Correct breathing and mussle tension are very important. Dont fail by unwantingly mix Hangetsu dachi with sanchin dachi. get a firm and strong Hangetsu dachi and puch pelvic forward. Also make sure you dont puch your zuki to much forward. Yes your should put your hip in but dont stretch it by lauching your arm too far.
I've watched this a few times and I think your contact/relationship with the floor is your biggest down fall. Try to drive into your heel when you step backwards this should prevent it lifting. When you step forward - drive from your back foot into your hip, compress the front knee and as the back foot passes the front foot expand using this front leg compression (which is now the back leg). Once you sort out the contact issue - you will see dramatic improvements overall. Ossu

Automatically your starting-speed for each move will increase and give you more power and stability to proceed to your next move.
Try to watch any great Japan sensei to find to correct rythm of each kata. It not all 1-1-1-1-1-1-1 etc. This also give you more feeling in your performance.
Kime and focus are things hard to judge when watching a video, so no comment there.
The last partially performed kata, Hangetsu, is not difficult in moves but extremely difficult in execution.
Are you indeed from the USA and are you indeed first Dan?
As I said your performance is not bad at all. Try to work on your stance. Your rear foot should always stick to the floor before moving forward. So all your zk-dachis should have your rear foot sticking to the floor. So train on glueing yourself to it. Same for your KK-dachis, kiba dachis etc. Not glueing your foot to the floor makes you loose balance in the slightest way as you can see in all your kata.
I am indeed from the USA and I am a Shodan in Shotokan karate. This video was taken after a hip injury making it slightly more difficult to lift off a completely planted foot. It became a chronic problem after this and ultimately aided in the failure that was my Nidan examination. Thanks much for the constructive criticism :)
if this is USA karate then Tobias is doing a great job because as we all know....USA karate tought be USA sensei usually is way bad. Wiggling, unneeded extra hand-leg-hip movement etc. For Tobias, if he learned his Shotokan in the USA must have a fairly descent teacher. If not I'd say he watched a lot of youtube videos of European and/or asian sensei. We must understand that he is a first dan grade. If any higher then the examinator is questionable. His performance isn't bad at all.
@RassinNL You must be on crack. It does not matter where you train and I have seen many in the Shotokan practitioners win tournaments in different countries. And there many amazing USA instructors.
You've got great stances and very nice form. But you're making a very basic mistake - the back heel is coming up off the ground during every stance transition, except for in Kokutso dachi. Try engaging your core while steping in front stance (and back). Not a complete abdominal contraction (like flexing), but more of a "sucking in" of your belly. It feels strange in the beginning, but over time you will get used to it and it will provide you with more stability.
True words Tobias, on the superior fighter over superior/inferior styles debates.
I really enjoyed the video, and it reminded me of the kata days. I believe you executed them well and I sympathize for the injury. I delevoped a bit of arthrosis on my right kneecap and that really crippled my career. Miss those days dearly. Post more when you can.
Sorry tobias3211 very weak, no snap. During tekki shodan you were bobbing up and down, stance should be strong so you don't bob! Whats with the strange face pulling! Shotokan is dynamic!!!!!
Looks very nice Bryce. You still need to "find the ground" in your transition. Imagine "kicking" the floor with the rear leg when you move. This will help to keep the heel down
Looks good Bryce! For a young buck you are a bit high in your stance. Try and use the ground more, imagine kicking the floor with the back leg while in transition. That might help with the back heel.
your heel is lifting up. if you work on shifting your weight so that your heel doesn't lift up you might find you have more power, snap and balance when moving.
looks good to me, I did the same thing when i was 4th kyu, some of it looked ok but saw so many mistakes, it really helps to improve technique, im 1st dan now so i should do it again, hopefully look a lot better now, looks like you have had a good traditional teacher, keep training hard mate, oss
aysel12345678910 ........ that just shows what an arse you are, every martial arts a diff jorney to the same destination. grow some balls and put ur art on the table to judge. i hope you never teach some one with that attitude.
I have a 1st degree black belt in Chung Do Kwan style Tae Kwon Do and am now a 5th kyu in Shotokan. Taikyoku Shodan in Shotokan was Taeguk Chodan in TKD. I learned all the Heian kata in TKD, but they were called Pyong-On. Tekki Shodan was Chul-Gi Chodan and Bassai Dai was Pal-sehk(?). And yes, there is a big difference in the way the different styles teach these kata or hyungs(TKD). TKD familiarized me with these kata but I feel that really "learned" them in Shotokan. My humble opinion only.
As a fellow student of Shotokan, I would like to congratulate you on having the guts to put your kata online. I am nervous enough getting judged by me Senseis, let alone the whole world. Dont be so hard on yourself and just keep practicing. You've inspired me to now tape myself so i can evaluate my kata better rather than just doing it in front of a mirror. Great job but be mindful of where the Keia's are in Bassai Dai and Keia like you mean it!!!
Hello this is your fellow karateka You look good. stay formal the karateka is modest an humble. Even though you don't need a uniform to practice. but you teaching. set the example.for us shotokan 4life everybody else that made a comment forget katate learn to spell then say mean judgements.
he hasnt even gotten it down yet and u judge? he will b corrected. oh ya and all bankai is not the same. funakoshi said kata will adapt and change as time goes by. and unless ure teacher trained with the man that created these katas sooo long ago his bankai could b diff. i have seen jka teachers have diff. bankai. so when he has done the kata 1000 times we will judge then. keep the training up and ule b great.
the move in hiean godan before the jump why did you snap that the bunkai for that is snaping someones kneck, you need to rethink of what your kata is about, also you need to relax the shoulders as you are all tense which is not good apart from that you have good speed but dont throw teqnice out the window,
people!!.. omg!! he's kata is gud!! some comments here are very mean!! who are you to say tat to him!?? are you better than HIM! then cmon.. hurry up and post some cool tokoi kata.. or something!! if you TALK THA TALK u betttaaaa WALK THEEEE WALK!!!
nice job. pretty good form. and unless ure a master we all need improvement. try some bankai training with ure kata, ule be amazed how much it helps. keep up ure training. that last kata was hangetsu and looked pretty good. i cant tell if ure breathing correctly but it looked good. hope to c more

Hi! Nice video, I'll try to come with some constructive critique(Heian shodan):
Your upper body oi zuki is good, but the legs are lingering a little bit. Try to work on finishing the punch at the same time as the maximum power from the legs kicks in.
Also, your turns are good and fast, but they can be faster if you remove the little extra movement when you lift the heel before turn. This move is unnessecary and doesn't get you closer to your goal, which is the turn!
EXACTLY! The exponent of the style can be bad, but that doesn't make the art bad. My humble advice to you brother is to slow down just a little. I figured that you were moving faster because of the time limit for posting videos here. Remember, we train in a martial art, but it is still an ART. Make it look AWESOME! You looked pretty good to me by the way. I train at Traditional Karate in Owensboro, Ky under Sensei Allen Renfrow. Look up "tska karate" on youtube. Where do you train?
Thats pretty smart, nice work! Nothing but respect for your moves. If you would be so kind Have a look on my channel and tell me how you think my boys karate is coming on. look for the ok go here it goes video i think you will enjy it :)
what I meant was you are good, but u need nore strenght and power and kata would look very nice. Practice more kihon. If possible do 500 punches everyither day and 500 kicks every other day. And try to practice more kumite technoques if you want to improve at kata.
Hello fellow karateka, working towards my nidan here so just some helpful observations. firstly you have come a long way, don't sell yourself short. You have good hip action and you know how to lock down all your techniques. I felt your tekki was very strong. The #1 thing I noticed right away in your video was the constant floating heel This is a common problem with students and one I had to work on hard. besides that, consider looking into "in breath" forms, it will improve your kata rhythm.
