ALAN JAY LERNER must be the greatest lyricist who ever lived. I did not know that these clever words were his handiwork too. ON TOP OF all that I know that came from him, 'The Street Where You Live' , all of My Fair Lady and the whole book of Camelot. He is like the gift that keeps on giving. 'Atta guy.
As usaul Mr Laine does a terriic job with this song. Some of my favorites, Shine, Black & Blue, Black Lace, Kiss for Tomorrow to name a few. I had the priviledge of seeing him many times in person and even attended "The Gandy Dancers Ball" that he had in NYC in the early 50's. He's one of the best of all times.
What a talent Frankie was! Yet, as talented and famous as he was, he never let it go to his head, and he always remembered his fans. I was lucky enough to be invited to Frankie's home and call him friend -- what a priviledge that was. There will never be another Frankie, and I miss him.....
was when I was seventeen years old, and entered a ballroom at Leith (Edinburgh Scotland). He was singing his song JEZEBELLE,
The lights were low with a rotating crystal
ball reflecting coloured light spots throughout the ballroom. Just then a lovely girl approached me and asked me to dance with her. With that scenario, I thought for a moment I was close to heaven on this earth. Alistair Ritchie
I was the lead trumpet player on this video, and I traveled with Frank on almost all of his British Tours. When he became aware that my young bride and I had never had a honeymoon, (Ray Barr, our dear friend told him) he insisted that we treat our occassion in Plymouth, England as a belated honeymoon without restrictions. He also made a gift of our favorite Waterford crystal. Beyond the great talent that we all recognize, he was a kind and generous man and we miss him.
Mr. Laine would come to Palumbo's in South Philly to perform for the annual Police & Fireman Dinners in the late 60's & early 70's...by the end of his gig, every cop and firefighter would be on their feet singing with him and he was the Greatest!
After the show, he would shake every cop's hand and sign every photo, however long it took...and this was 30 years before 9/11!!
Wow. what an exciting life you must have had, sir. I am glad to hear kind words about Frankie. He was a part of my early teen years - I played my first of his records on a Victrola record player - it was Lucky Old Sun. Only now, tho, do I truly appreciate the power and great sound of his voice. Wow!!!
You are right he is a legend. There will never be another person even close to Frankie Lane. When he sang this time you gave me mountain and had tears in his eyes at the end of the song, shows the emotion he puts into his songs. He is a true legend.
It looks like Frankie still had it up until near the very end. It's a great performance. Thanks.
Even though he was largely ignored by the media, it's great to see from the video that he was still appearing in classy venues with orchestras and performing in front of ample, appreciative crowds.
The clip is from the early 70's from one of Frankie's concerts in Europe. He toured extensively in England and the rest of Europe well into the late 80's. Always attracting large audiences.
@rphull Up until about age 85 Frankie's voice was still strong and impressive. I can't think of another singer who sounded as good at such an age. I saw Ed Ames on a PBS special just shy of birthday number 80 and he sounded great. Perhaps he will carry on in the Laine tradition. As regards the song here, Steve and Eydie had the best selling recording on this one.
Wow, Frankie Laine was great on this ditty ... loved it ... great post, too, thank you!

I prefer Sinatra's version. It has more authority.
No big complaints here though.

Frankie Laine does a great job of this - Robert Goulet also does a great version.

The lyrics are tough to sing yet Frankie made it look easy. A class act.

Has anybody come across anybody on this planet that sounds like Frankie? No? I thought so. And that's why he's a legend.
