I've used the backhand shot a few times in games, its useful for shooting rebounds that land on your offside... definatly worth learning if you are a forward.

and don't forget the fake shots. Fake a forwardshot then go in backhand, topshelf. The goalie thinks you're going to shoot forward and does a butterfly or lay himself down, then you go in backhand and have all open net above the goalie.

It can be done in a different way as well, starting at the toe, and turning your wrists so it rolls to the heel. My brother finds this easier, since this kind of wrist movemet is already strong from forehand shots.

i agree..its totally preference...havent heard of that way actually..might try it but wouldnt u have to have ur toe completely on the ice to get under it...i think in theory & from experience itd be easier to get under it from the heel but ill check out ur brothers way
