Well, we don't have NO idea of the age of the earth. The reason people say that it's 4.6 billion years old is because the only evidence we have points to the earth being that old. So it's not definite, but it makes most sense to assume that the earth is 4.6 billion years old.

A lot of YEC stuff is goofy like all animals (including TRex lol) ate plants. It makes their entire case look silly. Hovind reads a lot into the text. There was a flood, but the extent YEC makes it is exaggerated beyond belief. And you're right...there is a lot of stuff we don't get in the bible. For example, wouldn't you like to see how Mary raised Jesus? That would be helpful to parents! Personally, I think God knows we can't even get the "Believe in Jesus part right" so he cut it short. ha

He gets it more wrong than that, since he's obsessed with one of the worst English translations available. The description isn't of the animal's tail at all. It's the animals genitalia. The word translated at 'tail' is actually 'penis' and the phrase isn't 'sinews of his thighs' but 'cords of his testicles'. That does sound like a VERY strange way to describe an animal, though.

But we DO have a good approximation of the age of the Earth. That one is not "an unknown". That's a "pretty reliable known". When scientists say the Earth is 4.5 billion years old, they don't mean EXACTLY 4.5 billion years. They could be out by a couple of hundred million. It's a ballpark figure, based on several different observations from different fields of science that (coincidentally?) happen to give the same rough figure.

That said, you seem a wiser man than a year ago.

I don't know if he will talk himself into atheism. But he will at least lead into a more rational view of other realities of this universe.

Perhaps one day he will believe in evolution since it is so backed by evidence. But even that doesn't mean he will give up a belief in God. As we know many christians believe in evolution so its possible.

We don't have an exact date on the earth, but we do know it's really old. Radiometric dating and Carbon dating do work, they've been tested on objects with a known age.

Problem is, in the scientific community, the term theory does not mean the same thing it does in our daily vernacular.

One reason that there are many sects is because it's really impossible for people (who believe the bible is truth) to all interpret it the same way. This is one of the reasons I am not a fan of "organized religion." People join some church, and in a way they are told what they believe instead of searching for themselves. The only time people need to be told what to believe is if their beliefs are hateful in some way. Some things we just don't know and perhaps we should admit we don't know.

I'd say I definitely agree with that notion.

People who focus extensively on any part of a grander religion or faith are being willfully ignorant of the rest of what their host faith holds dear.

This is not to say that people who hold these denominational kinds of religions are bad people, but that they're somewhat misguided in their rationality.

People who search for answers shouldn't settle on something that has all the answers, but should be able to understand the potential of inquiry.
