Sounds GREAT! The reason you can run that engine without a cooling system for a little while is that those engines don't really make a lot of heat. They're made not to. Plus it not being closed up by a hood and fenders/grill will let enough air pass over it to keep it cool enough. Can't go a long time like that but.......

WHAT CAM? I'm looking to stroke my 460 out to like 521 for a truck project. Need some suggestions...  late 70's F-150 long box. 2wd street/strip truck. pump gas, C6 auto and a Ford 9" setup.

@bigorangetrucker You could run a solid cam if you dont mind adjusting valve lash on a regular basis. Just dont go over kill, too much cam will be crap on the street. If you have manual brakes you wont have to worry quite so much about vacuum. Happy medium cam I guess LOL.

Are the Howards Cams grinds any good. I dont know anyone that runs one, but they are pretty cheap and made in Wisconsin, just a couple of hours from where I lived for 25 years.

P.S. whats a good compression ratio for regular unleaded pump gas?

A set of D0VE-C or C8VE-A or E cylinder heads mixed with stock pistons on a pre-72 block or a set of Keith Black flat-tops with the same heads on a 73+ block and any choice of cams ( I use a performer rpm ) will make upwards of 425hp at the crank, add a good set of headers and a Weiand stealth intake and you have a damn strong engine.

I picked up a '86 Ford Ambulance box van about 2 years ago with a 460 and a C6 in it. 86,000 original clicks. Runs and drives, althoug the choke doesnt work on the carb so its a PITA to start.

My wife and I are in the process of closing on our first house, so funding for my project has diminished somewhat. I was thinkin of just porting the stock heads, add a Magnum 280 cam, or XE 274 and just hone the cylinders for new rings on some 10:1 pistons.

Stuff it in my '68 Galaxie.

The 390 that's in it is huffed, needs to be rebuilt. cakes up the spark plug on Number 8 cylinder really bad and compression is 125 instead of 150 like the other 7.

Just a street cruiser, not into drag racing, but would like some more snort.

I could just do a quick rebuild on the 390 and save the 460 for something else... A ranger or a Fox Mustang possibly...
