i want to know if is it ok to have mandriva 2008 or 2009 and if these runs the actual programs and aplications, and if these two are capable to run KDE 4.2 or later
@trasmethrash Mandriva 2008 and 2009 are both unsupported. If you want KDE Mandriva 2011 comes with version 4.6.5. I've since switched to Mageia Linux. It comes with KDE 4.6.5 as well. I hope you like Mandriva, but unfortunately, they no longer support GNOME. GNOME and KDE should be supported by all Linux distro's in my opinion. Mageia dot org
@Nextwave1980 how unfortunate :( mandriva 2009 is the best os i have ever use, it recognized everything and it runs great in my hp pavilion a518x with only 512 mb of ram, i could even use compiz fusion at almost full power
@tenpor07 Yes, Impress. Comes bundled with Mandriva. Allows opening and saving of PDF, PowerPoint, and ODP formats. Time to do a new video I think. I haven't touched 2008.1 in years. I'm running Mandriva 2010.0 GNOME now. :)
Can someone tell me what the best linux is? For someone who likes to play games (Wine) and youtube, and pretty much anything else. I need a well rounded linux that has pretty much everything.
just get windows then if your after playing games, I still find wine to be a pain in the arse to work with or just duel boot...but persojnally I use linux mint or open suse.
Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora, openSUSE, Mandriva are good operating systems. If you want total control of your PC, use Gentoo, ArchLINUX, and Slackware!
I just installed Mandriva on an older laptop I've had for a while. I've been wanting to play with a Linux distro forever and now that I have it I really don't know where to start. How did you get that OS X-like dock on the bottom? Is there a download somewhere?
im not very experienced with linux but what you can do is download a style that works with compizfusion (you will need to look it up if you dont know what it is because i really cant explain it quickly) that will have it... if you need anymore help just ask id be happy to answer... i havent though actually done the dock before... oh ya you will need to make a new pannel... hope this was helpful but you should ask someone who has done this already im working on it though
Thanks! The maker of the video is actually helping me out quite a lot (he's awesome!) and I now have my laptop looking and performing very much like his!
I'm still not as experienced as i want to be and playing with it seems to be the best teacher.
Thanks for your input, I'll let you know how it works ;-)
Mandriva beats everthing else hands down and so does KDE. KDE+Mandriva=love Nextwave1980 save yourself the trouble Ubuntu is not worth it. It fails everything. Flash lags like hell and so does everything else and dies about a month after installing it...
I'll have to be honest here.. i've never used ubuntu.. I'll have to try it on one of the PC's i've got kicking around here.. I'm using mandriva mainly.. and I have linux mint on another older P3.. the system that I'm using with Mandriva is a AMD Athlon64 x2 4400 w/2GB of ram and runs wonderfully.
Hey.. its the end credits from the soundtrack apollo 13.
glad you enjoyed it. I'm loving linux more and more each day. Multiple monitors is wild.. unfortunately i can't capture both screens at the same time :(

KDE/MAndriva/Linux Has 3 programms thats really worth the switch.
Ktorrent
Amarok
K3b
They are the reasons i go to linux and they are the reason why i stay there.
Mandriva itself is excellent, very nice controlecenter and the fonts are godlike.

ya i just did some more research and the dock is made by a program that right now i cant remember what it was but you could probably find it
sajasio 3 years ago
The dock program at the bottom is called AWN
Avant Window Navigator
Its in the Mandriva's install and remove section. Its part of the GNOME, but works great in KDE. I'd be lost without it. Its such a great tool.
