@dman1311974 Uummm they do that to avoid broken hands, it is very easy to do with bare knuckles, open hands are still very effective!! Allot of hand to hand and street fighting (self defence) instructors will teach palm strikes instead of punches for the same reason.

I wish more fighters would take the Chris Lytle route and retire on a win to cement their legacy and not have to make the fans witness them get beat down in their old age. @leblaith you are going to have to work your ass off. I was released from the hospital following Brain surgery and once I was cleared to life, I built 25lbs of muscle within the month. I went from 225 to 250 but it is NOT easy by any means.

@martinez418 it is possible if he was on steds he could do that kind of growth ,the other factor is he was post surgery so he probably dropped a fair bit of his normal body mass during pre/post surgery, so he says he started at 225 he probably normally weighed 235-240 before the surgery so some off the weight could of been his body just recovering and getting back to its pre op weight

Man, Ken Shamrock was such a beast back in the day. I wish more fighters would take the Chris Lytle route and retire on a win to cement their legacy and not have to make the fans witness them get beat down in their old age. Then again, who are we to tell these guys when to stop fighting, they just have it in their blood.

@ItsThoseWhiteKids Ken Shamrock actually said himself that when a fighter bases his entire life on not giving up, it's hard to retire when he starts getting old.
The ironic thing about that is that Ken probably didn't even realize he was describing himself.

@ItsThoseWhiteKids afaik, ken shamrock and bas rutten are almost the same age. i am the complete opposite of an expert when it comes to martial arts, but my guess why ken shamrock beat rutten 2 times is that his style of fighting somehow "counters" rutten's? could that be true? i mean i am just wondering how it can be that bas rutten never won a fight against ken shamrock, though shamrock has way more losses than rutten in his career. anyone got a good explanation for that?

@Eischpiehkgutinglish pancrase didnt allow closed fist strikes the rules favoured submission guys which shamrock was bas was a striker learning to grapple in an mma match most would agree bas woud have the advantage

@repairmanjack82 In regular MMA rules, Shamrock would be able to blast Rutten on the ground with punches (where he couldn't here) which levels out not being able to punch with a closed fist.

@Minowaman1 yeah i take that its a valid point, but theres a big difference in trying to shoot for takedowns and worrying about getting a slap as opposed to a solid punch! it tends to change the range of the fight , its very clear here that bas was inexperienced on the ground the timing of the fights in bas's career were the defining factor but ken did beat him twice cant knock shamrock on that he was decent back in his day but would of loved if they fought in the ufc

@Minowaman1 no, "R" stands for "rustig" (in Dutch), which means "calm". "relax" is "ontspannen" in Dutch.

@Minowaman1 Actually, during Rutten's career, whenever he had a fight, he would write two capital "R"s on the back of his hands with a magic marker. The "R" stood for Rustig, the Dutch word for "calm". This was intended to help him remember to stay calm during his fights.

@leblaith you are going to have to work your ass off. I was released from the hospital following Brain surgery and once I was cleared to life, I built 25lbs of muscle within the month. I went from 225 to 250 but it is NOT easy by any means.

@frtknokr i dont believe that. even those genetically inclinde to build muscle easy only put on about 20lbs per year. 25 in 1 month is not possible, not even with roids i dont think.

@frtknokr You gain 25lbs of muscle within a month? not possible man! you can gain 15/20lbs of just fat; if you're in-taking lots of fatty foods, but no muscle even if you train very hard.

@martinez418 it is possible if he was on steds he could do that kind of growth ,the other factor is he was post surgery so he probably dropped a fair bit of his normal body mass during pre/post surgery, so he says he started at 225 he probably normally weighed 235-240 before the surgery so some off the weight could of been his body just recovering and getting back to its pre op weight

Many of the japanese fights are worked so who knows if this is real or not. Although there is no doubt in my mind that Ken is a better grappler and all around fighter than Bas
