The way Doc says "Marty, you made it!" here is completely different from the way he said it in recent home video prints.
Apparently this was done because Bob Zemeckis didn't think Doc sounded excited enough. Shame on you Zemeckis for going down the George Lucas route (something you normally wouldn't do)! That's the worst thing ANY filmmaker can do!
I just threw my blu-ray in and you're right. The "Marty, you made it!" is different but it is synced with the lip movement perhaps the clip in the Siskel and Ebert review was just a review copy that was pre-final cut of the film? I dunno.
Doc actually sounds slightly less excited in the blu-ray. Maybe they just changed the pitch of the phrase so that it didn't sound like he's yelling it. Odd.
@aBigSaltyDookie Actually no. It's a redub. If you listen carefully to the audio in Doc's voice in the blu-ray, the "You made it" part sounds much clearer than the rest of the audio.
I sampled the audio from this video, ran it through Audacity, and tried to experience that line by lowering the pitch several times. The only conclusion I came to is that there's no way that line was changed by lowering the pitch. It sound distorted if they did that.
@nonplayerzealot4 ha! i remember, i saw it in the theater, i remember the year of the showing being 1984, because in the movie marty says it's "1985" and i remembered it because the year was a year ahead.
SIskel describes Christopher Lloyd as "pretty good" and said his character was based on Jerry Lewis' nutty professor. Come on! I've always liked Siskel, but Lloyd was more than "pretty good," and his character was original!!!!!
@Monkofmagnesia The more one watches the film, the more we grow to love the character. One has to watch the film over and over again to realise how great the character is.
I'm very glad that Siskel loved this classic so much. However, it's probably not right to give *all* the credit to the screenplay. There were so many important factors perfectly done that allowed BTTF to be so good: the perfect tone of the leads, Silvestri's classic score, etc. An obvious demonstration of how the script alone wasn't enough was how they had to recast the lead to MJ Fox because the humor or liveliness that Zemeckis was going for reportedly wasn't there with Stoltz.
@gspendlove Sorry to hear about your loss! It makes you wish, you could go back in time either to prevent his death, or bringing the BTTF bluray box, a bluray player and an HD television!
Did this got "Two Thumbs Up" from them? cause this is one of my favorite teen comedies of the 80's and I have the 25th anniversary trilogy on Blu-Ray,cause Michael J Fox and Chris Lloyd are legends and also are "Siskel & Ebert", so 5 stars for this flashback review for the Spielberg/Zemeckis iconic classic.
It's so good to see a classic Siskel and Ebert review that I agree with for once!
I saw this movie at the cinema on the re-release last year - one of the best moviegoing experiences of my life. The audience were laughing out loud throughout.
Ebert in the 80's reminds me of my Grandma, because she still sometimes wears similar spectacles (until I finally bought her Tag Heuer one for her birthday).
Saw this on the big screen last October (2010) 25, at 7:00 pm, exactly 25 years after Marty went back in time. I was too young to see it when it first came out. What a privilege. Fantastic to see it in the theater. If anyone reading this gets the chance to do the same, I highly suggest you do!
I'm a huge fan of SCI-FI and Adventure movies. Back To the Future is pure classic - interesting storyline, great acting and visual effects. Michael J.Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson and Crispin Glover did a great job. I miss the 80's and its sci-fi/adventure films - Back to the Future , Aliens, Empire Strikes Back, RoboCop, Mad Max 2 & 3, Ghostbusters, Rambo trilogy, Batman, DeepStarSix, Romancing the Stone, low budget films Sheena, Masters of the Universe, Elvira Mistress of the Dark etc
if you think about what movie won the academy award for best picture in 1985 you xould not name but you would know it was a drama yet a comedy like back to the future a scifi comedy would never got nominated and is seen as probably one of the best of 1985 if not the best of the year it says to me there is a fundamental flaw with the acedemy awards process
@videowatcher2268 Dude, this review was made 25 years ago when the film first came out, and S&E saw it for the first time, so don't blame them for such minor problems
@ae86miami I think top 3 movies in the 80's. Simply awesome if you grew up in the 80's and you have this movie as one of the first you really remember watching as a kid.
@AnalyticalMenace Because it's from 1985, when Siskel and Ebert was still called "At the Movies". Buena Vista took over the show in 1986, and all of those episodes are more readily available.
@AnalyticalMenace True, but there's more to it when the show was picked up by Buena Vista they catalogued them more efficently then they were before. Since the show was Public Broadcasted it probably could be said that the original masters for that era are now lost. The only way to see these pre-86 tapes is if someone uploaded their original VHS recording.
@AnalyticalMenace The website that had all of their reviews never even had this review on it, they only had everything up to 1987-'88. It's hard to find because someone recorded it and hadn't loaded it yet. It's kind of cool, actually.
