gudpeder: Can you please tell me where I can buy a CD with this version of Vladimir Miller singing this song? Please . . . nothing else will do! Thanks
@Joan18706 The CD is just called "The Male Choir of St. Petersburg". I ordered it from Amazon. I will put up a direct link in the description. I would encourage everyone to buy the CD to support the choir!
TenStarsplus!!!! Vladimir Miller is my hero, even though I don't speak Russian, the feeling of the lyrics comes through in his tremendous voice!!!! I myself was a basso profundo, until I had surgury for throat cancer!!! They managed to save my speaking voice, for which I thank God but I can no longer sing in my church choir!! The cancer was caused by smoking!!! Thank you so much for posting this fantabulous beautiful piece of music my friend!! Stephen
@BigDuckKetterer Thank you for sharing your story. I'm sorry to hear about your illness, hope you are better. And I hope that the other smokers out there will learn from your mistake!
Vladimir Pasjukov is one of the other octavists on this recording and if one listens carefully you can hear him on all of the very low pitches including singing along with Miller on the final note. This is a great recording!
@bega99 yes ...he is from Siberia....you are right.... his not from antarctic ( as some people wrote here) or from Germany....he is Russian and he is from Siberia....
well pavelkostov, when I said he might be jewish,I was talking about his physical features.I think you misunderstood the word ''jewish'' with the religion of the jews from Israel,He could be jewish and be a atheist,he could be a Christian, anything.
I see where your coming from, however Miller sings almost exclusively Orthodox Liturgical music, and belongs to the Valaam institute of music which is part of the Valaam monastery renown for its strict adherence to Orthodox Christianity. In light of this I highly doubt he is Jewish. He is also certainly not German.
@pavelkostov Hello from Russia, Vladimir purely Russian, Orthodox Christian, a parishioner of the temple in St. Petersburg, throw pry, he always sings in worship services in St. Petersburg, Valaam, and of course in the academic choir
I'm Norwegian, I speak several languages. I don't think English is better than any other language, but the majority of YouTube users knows English better than Russian and German, so I think it is reasonable that English should be the language used in this discussion.
Besides, you should be careful with those homophobic thendencies, as it is quite revealing that you yourself is insecure about your own malehood.
... although admittedly bigoted of me to use that sort of insult in this context, way to go for being equally stupid for calling me "insecure". I know quite well how I'm "aligned".
There is no good Cyrillic rendition of "Müller"; the best that can be done is "Миллер". Re-Romanization of that gives "Miller", which can thus appear English even though it is not.
I think it likely that he may be partly of Volga-German descent and that the original name was most likely "Müller."
Haha, that's only in English pronounciation. In German it's not pronounced "iu" but [y] (using the phonetic alphabet). It's like an "i" with your lips rounded.
A agree with OlDoinyo, the name is of German origin.
Thankyou (danke) for introducing Vladimir's beautiful bass voice. WOW....his voice vibrates in one's chest. I'm sorry I do not understand German but I'm guessing you are wondering why a Russian's last name is "Miller". Am I correct? What's in a name anyway, right? It's the voice that counts. Happy New Year!
My older brother passed away just before this past Christmas, and for whatever reason, this video makes me think of him. It's such a peaceful and wonderful song, thank you for posting it =)
may i say few words? seems to me he can project his voice as its needed, so, in different places he can go deeper and louder, or deeper and soft; i think he has a wonderful tecnique, because of this; and his voice is heaven.
@tehen162 I'm sorry about that. Yeah, I know what you mean--this song sounds so heavenly, but it's acutally about thieves I think. It's like the music and the song title don't go together!!
@djlucy1 You obviously don't know the lyrics do you? It is about the conversion of ataman Kudeyar . I copy the last two verses: He lied with the girl in the day While making the raids at night. But one day the fiend was awoken By remorse sent from the Lord. Kudeyar left his band And ceased making raids. He went to the cloister To serve God and men. And the beginning of the refrain: Let us pray to the God, our Lord .. etc. As you see, the lyrics go well with the wonderful music.
Vladimir Pasyukov will always be my favorite octavist, but this is quite wonderful. Miller's voice is like a deep cushion of velvet; a person could sink into it on a cold winter's day for a long, long time.
At the end he does a low Ab. There are some videos on youtube where he does a low G. I dont know how low he can go but I have never heard that anyone except Pyotr Mihailik could do a low E.
Im just learning bass clef. is the low E lower than the double low C and for that matter where is the low Ab and low G, which apparently can only realy be reached by wichniakov. very confused
At the end he does a low Ab. There are some videos on youtube where he does a low G. I dont know how low he can go but I have never heard that anyone except Pyotr Mihailik could do a low E.
Nikolai Korniev (director of the St. Petersburg Chamber choir) said he has a bass (Viktor Wichniakov) who can sing a low F, and yes Mihailik could sing a low E, I also heard that claim
Damn, this really is a great song. I must agree with Pavelkostov- everytime I listen to it, I like it better... I also sing this piece (of course, it can never be compared to this performance...Vladimir is just class A...) If you would like to hear our version with our sextet (I sing the solo part...), just type in youtube search: 12 razbojnikov. you will find only one hit, that's us. But I say again, don't expect anything, cause compared to this one here, I'm a tenor:D
yes pyotr mihailik is more powerfull on his low notes than any other basso profondo I have ever heard. He is not as well trained as miller or wichniakov however. He sang with the don cossack choir in the 1960's! he could sing a low B over an entire choir by himself (I have plenty of recordings unfortunately not on CD), it is said he could reach bottom E!
I always thought that Miller is the most powerful among those three (Miller, Pasiukov and Wichiniakov...). I guess I was wrong. So the one with the most powerful voice in low range (below low A) is Wichiniakov? or is it Pasiukov?

I haven't really heard or read about any other basso profondo. Is that because these three are considered to be the best in the world, or are there more of them but I don't know them...?
I'm not so sure about that. In the little lyrics paper that comes with the CD "The Male Choir of St. Petersburg", it says "By the end of the 19th century, the choir were numbered 90 [...] Of the 22 basses seven were bassi profundi, who could easily reach down to bottom G. These unique voices have been produced in Russian soil up to the present day"
I don't think there are still seven of them, and none of them sing in the Male Choir of St. Petersburg only. At least not Miller and Wichniakov.
The Male Choir of Saint Petersburg has four bassi-profondo currently, 4 basses, 5 baritones, and 12 tenors. They have info on Vladimir Miller on the Male Choir of Saint Petersburg website under actors.
@47krat For other names, check out the wikipedia page on oktivists. I wrote half of it myself, so it might not be 100%, but you'll find some more stuff there.

There are more than a few "Miller's" in Russia.
There are also more than a few Russians of partial German descent. This was especially true in the Baltic area but also along the Volga and elsewhere.
If a German ancestor came during Catherine's reign (250 years ago) you might be 3% German maybe.
