I can never hear bluegrass with out thinking about the lose of duffey. It felt like family and i never personally met him. being brought up on this band makes it hard to let go of the old. Nice job guys keep it up
I Love this song! It got me thru many a bad time so long ago. Had the pleasure of seein' the Seldom Scene a few times...very moving! Thanks for the vid!
As great as Duffy's tenor was, John Starling had ( has!? ) the most beautiful pure voice for bluegrass i ever heard. Close seconds in my book would be Larry Sparks, Tony Rice ( before he lost his voice ) Ricky Skaggs, Cliff Waldron and Tom Waller...but John's my favorite...Last Train from Poor Valley, etc, etc!!
We all miss Duffy, but this is still a great band. Who would have thought that almost 12 years after John's passing that the Scene would still be making great music.
Glad to see the Scene carrying on but I'll never forgot the night I went to the Birchmere in the dumpy shopping center off Walter Reed Blvd in Alexandria ( before the one on Mr Vernon Ave. )....we got there too late to get in but stood there watching Duffy thru the glass door and listening to him sing the tenor on this song and i was absolutely mezmorized....completely blown away. I made it on time the following Thursday and began about a fifteen year love affair w/ the band.
Dudley is a good singer, just he is not a fit for the seldom scene. There will never be a group like the original five. Phil Rosenthal was a great singer but they did not like him. Too Bad. I would not pay to see them now. Lou
@pedalman Y'know Ive had a change of mind on my last comment . Having listened to other versions this does sound "not quite right".........but I still like it a lot.
This version is pretty good but it sure don't beat the studio version with John Duffy and John Starling and Mike Auldridge in the 70s. I miss that line up. Lou is a good tenor but I don't think hes quite up there with John Duffy
I think the best version of the song was the one on the 20th Anniv. Reunion album with Lou singing lead and Duffey singing tenor.....when you had those two voices combined it was unreal.
I saw Alison Krauss & Union Station this summer & thought they'd do a great job on this, which made me buy a new copy of Herb Pedersen's Southwest LP from the UK
Dudley does good on a lot of songs but make no mistaKE THIS IS LOU REED song through and through

yep duffy made this song--maybe they should retire it--it sounds strained

Hate me if you must, I think this song calls for a more subtle lead vocal.

Lou Reid's version and John Duffy's version are done with different styles. Personally, I love what Lou Reid has done with the song. Sounds great.

If I live to be a million years old I could never come close to making the impact on the world that John Duffy did. He WILL live forever!

john starling was the best.nobody can argue that.he just fit

well Lou can certainly hold up to the original version but i'm just not quite sure about that dudley's voice, not a good mix for the seldom scene.
sorry, but doesn't blend well with much of anything or anyone.

I gotta disagree with you there, hardpicker - I love Dudley's singing.

I agree with you. He could even sing the phone book and it would sound great.
LisaU15 3 years ago
@hardpicker Well if you dislike this then maybe you should go listen to some Taylor Swift " country " Ha! ....Then come back to real country music.

You're comparing apples to oranges. I love the old seldome scene linup. But the new one is great too in their own way.
