Very sad indeed. Captain McVay was punished for losing a ship during wartime? Admiral Nimitz was against the court martial, so are other admirals, however politics are very strong inside the navy and the powers that be made him a scape got out of him. Captain McVay killed himself years later no doubt due to this "punishment" he took. Losing a ship and its crew and surviving is torture enough for any captains. Note, they had been escorted by a destroyer than can do ASW.
