Bob I love your rants but you got this one wrong. You need to research how Social Security works. The working generation of today is taxed to pay for the retired people of TODAY. When the working generation of today retires, our childrens paychecks will be taxed for us. There is only such a problem because the current working generation cannot support the large group of baby boomers that are retiring.

I've been paying in to SS for 25 years and I get a notice in mail stating I will get approx 1/2 of what is due me when I start drawining SS, unless Congress makes changes before then.

@HemiHead66 My husband has worked for the rr 45 yrs and he's only 62. He can retire now but when he does, my medical is cut off. We're getting every test done possible to be sure a medical problem does not exist. With the shit Obama has done with the health care, we won't get the med care we might need later on. I retired early at 62 so I could collect at least something out of all I've paid my into it. It really sucks and it's not right. Like I said before we're fucked.

But if you wait for full retirement age you can make as much money as you like. And I wouldn't worry about Medicare, the only thing you'll see happen is drug prices get cheaper. It is rather hard to make false claims when they look at the doctor's reports, x-rays, medical tests, and the piles of doctor's reports. The reason the program is understaffed is because they had to cut down due to the budget cuts. Anchor babies have been a drain on the system due to illigal immigrants in this country.

I believe that's why Congress threw such a fit when President Bush just suggested that 2% of SS funds be invested for the individual from whom it is being withdrawn. Congress doesn't look at that money as OUR money, they look at it as THEIR slush fund to use any way they want.

No, I don't hate old and disabled people. But there was a time when families, Churches, synagogues (and mosques too, I suppose) and communities in general took care of those who could not take care of themselves. This was all done privately and voluntarily. It built a better society. Now, the gov't has stepped in and we have the world we have now. Do the math.
The systems is broken and this is an accepted fact. At some point in the future, more money will be going out in the form of SS payments than will be coming in in the form of SS taxes. That's what the issue is and it isn't debated at all. The debate is on how to fix the system and increasing taxes has already proven to NOT be a FIX.

Try to be a bit more open minded about why I think the current system is flawed. That we pay now is being paid right out with the promise that the same will happen when we retire. It has been accepted that there will not be enough people paying in to support the outflow by 2041. That's a broken system and needs to be fixed. If you can't agree to that point (which you seem to not be able to) then I guess the conversation is indeed over because you have your head in the sand.

It's not a lie, both sides have agreed that this problem is indeed coming. Right now people paying now are basically funding someone else's retirement and not their own. I think it should be setup to where you fund your own retirement with some kind of min. payout guarantee for lower income retirees.
People pay into SS every time they get paid and can't draw from it until 65. 12.4% of your salary gets taken from you and your employer by force every pay period. Over 35-40 years, that money invested even for a near poverty income would pay you more than social security when you retire. This makes social security not so secure. People say they can't save on their own but yet the government has already put it in place, just change it to a savings plan and let people keep their money.

You don't get it. Social Security used to be in a Trust Fund (untouched). The democrats voted for it to be in a general fund for Congress to spend (democratic congress). Couple that with the baby-boomer generation who will be collecting. It's gone.
Social Security dollars are spent as part of the general budget. My payroll taxes pay for pork and war, thus it is a tax. Why should a poor person pay payroll taxes on 100% of their income while a wealthier person pays a much lower rate. The wealthy person pays no payroll taxes on capital gains, dividends and corporate distributions.
Social Security is virtually impossible to acquire for trumped up claims. I speak from personal experience when I say that one person I know who actually requires social security disability payments was turned down.
My question is why does the government take 15% of my earnings and keep it. And if I need it they only pay me a small fraction of what I am owed. For instance an average wage earner after retirement should be pulling down a minimum of $15,000 per month and have more than $3 million in his "LOCKBOX WITH MY NAME ON IT" to leave to his children for healthcare, education and housing

people who really need disability for health problems have a very hard time getting it, i have a friend who lost his home , car , and everything he owned waiting for something he paid into for 26 years. he is almost dead , and he still has to wait. mental conditions get pushed through almost overnight.
My friend got hit by a car while riding his bike and was denied financial assistance that he was supposed to get as a victim of a crime. He had a $10,000 hospital bill to pay and no insurance. He was told, "You're white. You'll bounce back." to his face.

Now for the railroad retirement and my ss, It use to be that wife could collect hers ss along with her husbands rr retirement but that was changed around 1972. ss called it double dipping. We're getting every test done possible to be sure a medical problem does not exist. With the shit Obama has done with the health care, we won't get the med care we might need later on. I retired early at 62 so I could collect at least something out of all I've paid my into it. It really sucks and it's not right. Like I said before we're fucked.

But if you wait for full retirement age you can make as much money as you like. And I wouldn't worry about Medicare, the only thing you'll see happen is drug prices get cheaper. It is rather hard to make false claims when they look at the doctor's reports, x-rays, medical tests, and the piles of doctor's reports. The reason the program is understaffed is because they had to cut down due to the budget cuts. Anchor babies have been a drain on the system due to illigal immigrants in this country.

Not only is it going to other parasites, it is going to fund the war in Iraq, pet projects for Congressmen, and generally any project Congress wants to tap into SS for. I believe that's why Congress threw such a fit when President Bush just suggested that 2% of SS funds be invested for the individual from whom it is being withdrawn. Congress doesn't look at that money as OUR money, they look at it as THEIR slush fund to use any way they want.

Not only did the US Gov't during Clinton's administration take the SS surplus, but not one Congressman or Sentors pays into Social Security, the gov't puts it in for them.

A bit testy are we? Let's be clear, I don't support destroying SS, I support changing SS to something that makes sense. I do support a system that would let me own my own retirement account that I can manage myself. Not everyone feels that way so I'd also support a system that gives you that choice of letting the government manage your funds for you like the current system. I support the freedom of choice and the freedom to have control over my own retirement, my own future.

Try to be a bit more open minded about why I think the current system is flawed. That we pay now is being paid right out with the promise that the same will happen when we retire. It has been accepted that there will not be enough people paying in to support the outflow by 2041. That's a broken system and needs to be fixed. If you can't agree to that point (which you seem to not be able to) then I guess the conversation is indeed over because you have your head in the sand.

The fundamental math IS the problem that we will be facing, that's what I mean when I say it's broken. There will be fewer people paying in once baby boomers have retired which means less money. It's not a lie, both sides have agreed that this problem is indeed coming. Right now people paying now are basically funding someone else's retirement and not their own. I think it should be setup to where you fund your own retirement with some kind of min. payout guarantee for lower income retirees.

People pay into SS every time they get paid and can't draw from it until 65. 12.4% of your salary gets taken from you and your employer by force every pay period. Over 35-40 years, that money invested even for a near poverty income would pay you more than social security when you retire. This makes social security not so secure. People say they can't save on their own but yet the government has already put it in place, just change it to a savings plan and let people keep their money.

And just to add. Opponents like to say "we can't trust the markets". Well the reality is, the current system relies on markets and overall economic conditions. Pay-Go assumes that there will always be enough people working to pay for those receiving benefits. In poor economic conditions, unemployment is high, tax revenue is low and there are fewer people paying into the flawed pay-go system.

You don't get it. Social Security used to be in a Trust Fund (untouched). The democrats voted for it to be in a general fund for Congress to spend (democratic congress). Couple that with the baby-boomer generation who will be collecting. It's gone.

Social Security dollars are spent as part of the general budget. My payroll taxes pay for pork and war, thus it is a tax. Why should a poor person pay payroll taxes on 100% of their income while a wealthier person pays a much lower rate. The wealthy person pays no payroll taxes on capital gains, dividends and corporate distributions.

Social Security is virtually impossible to acquire for trumped up claims. I speak from personal experience when I say that one person I know who actually requires social security disability payments was turned down.

Reconsiderations won: 16.6% (nationally: 15.1%)

My question is why does the government take 15% of my earnings and keep it. And if I need it they only pay me a small fraction of what I am owed. For instance an average wage earner after retirement should be pulling down a minimum of $15,000 per month and have more than $3 million in his "LOCKBOX WITH MY NAME ON IT" to leave to his children for healthcare, education and housing

Abolish Social Security. It is a unlawful tax, a bad idea and unfixable. If I had all the money I've paid into social security now, I'd be retired. Instead, i get to bust my butt while unwed mother, drug addicts and criminals sit around and watch cartoons all day. Thanks America.

eflyerman, Social Security has been one of the most efficient systems ever, with only one penny per dollar going to administrative costs. And just because that turned out badly doesn't mean that removing the salary cap altogether is a bad idea. There must be an independent variable here

You should really do some research. It is the other way around. The government both federal and local,thrive with tax money from illegal immigrants. For instance, social security, medicare, sales tax, gas taxes, property taxes.

And as for sales tax and gas tax? give me a break. do you even know the percentages on sales tax? and alot of states do not have taxes on gas.

people who really need disability for health problems have a very hard time getting it, i have a friend who lost his home , car , and everything he owned waiting for something he paid into for 26 years. he is almost dead , and he still has to wait. mental conditions get pushed through almost overnight.

Do the math. If you make $15 p/hour from age 22 to 67 the GOV will take $6.20 from you and $6.20 from your employer for a total of $12.40 out of every $100 you make. That is expressed this way $15 X 40 X 52 = $31,200 X 12.4% = $3,869, which is contributed to Social Security each year. Compound that using 10% per year and you should have $892,437 in your Lockbox when you retire.

That is a FACT. the 3 people I personally know who are on it, pulling in free RENT/UTILITIES/ELECTRIC/FOOD STAMPS and $600 extra spending money a month for their video games and Chinese food. They ARE ALL SCAMMING THE SYSTEM, and it PISSES ME OFF every time I see them.
