  • just for the record, that is not the concert I have been waiting for.

  • Hey look at 0:39 , they had a laptop in 1983!

  • SCOTLAND!

  • The song does make me sad because the lead singer, Stuart Adamson, killed himself. He hung himself in 2001. Very sad...

  • One report was "self strangulation," by which he might have meant to finish rather than die.

  • aww, he's kinda cute!

    i love this song. too!

  • Can't decide if it wants to be a James Bond film or like Beavis and Butthead said an Irish Spring (I know they're Scottish, although Stuart was born a Manc) advert. In the 80s people made videos with shite in them for the same reason a dog licks its bollocks, because they could.

  • the national alligator!!!!!!

  • what?

  • RIP Stuart Adamson

  • Hey I am a kid I wish I lived in the 80's this Halloween I was a 80's girl! The clothes were Soo cool and the music was AWESOME!!!! I wish I lived then I dont like now how there are so many kids with cell phones and I hate the clothing and the music is all horrible! BUT I like country! I LOVE 80'S MUSIC!

  • It was a very good time!!! I wish I could re-live it!!

  • (dogdoggie12) I feel the same way, the 80's in my opinion is the best decade for music as well as style!!!!

  • that is soo true. im 16 and i swear i was born 30 yrs too late ;)

i dunno if i really like the women's fashions in the 80s, but the guys were really hot. - not like now a days :( -

  • It's a shame there are no good songs like this anymore.

  • Don't throw in the towel, The Cure still has an album or 2 left in them I am sure!

  • Oh not me. I am thrilled to have been a teenager of the 80's! We had the craziest music and clothes and the underground club scene in NYC was amazing. I wouldn't want to be a kid nowadays. My kids have no real talent to look at or up to.

  • Then you're not looking hard.

The National, Wolf Parade, ...by the Trail of Dead, Deer Tick, Radiohead, etc...

Not to mention all the 80's bands still touring.

  • SHAAA!!!!

  • Really sad he committed suicide...many years of alcoholism

  • ...and depression, which perhaps was the reason for the alcoholism.

  • Q: When Tears for Fears released the song "Shout!" in 1985, where do you think they got their inspiration from???

A: Clearly from Stuart Adamson's use of the Scottish battle cry in this song from 1983 (although Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith are from Bath, England, I think). Many others have tried to duplicate it since then. In today's world, even Lady Gaga uses it.

These guys really were amazing innovators...

  • My favourite band!

  • god damn i wish i grew up in the 80's i hate now days music

  • hey, growing up in the 80s wasnt so great. i wish i was growing up now. Growing up in the 80s, i wished for the 60s . ... so it all seems great on the otherside of the fence; but its not.

It is better where you are right now :)

  • could NOT have said it better brother. amen.

  • Saw the Cult at the Albert Hall last month and Mark Brezicki (I know thats spelt wrong!) made an appearance on drums

  • Oh Stewart, Why the fuck did you do what you did! What a waste. Saw BC several times in the 80's. Brilliant

  • BIlly Burr.

  • @We4get1918

Monday Morning Podcast! woo go bill burr! XD

  • adamson was the man...R.I.P

    wasted talent thru suicide :(

  • @ThERoGuE76 Yep what a waste.

  • they played guitars like bagpipes nobody has ever perfected a sound like that since

  • I cannot believe I'm finding these songs in youtube people!!Here you are not finding them anywhere...

    Kostas,Greece

  • I have found a lot of stuff like this too ! God bless the internet

  • Scottish music, as far as we know. Most definitely Scottish, it's written in the tunes!

  • i think there is really something wrong with me.

  • Yeaaaaaah thats a classic section from the no friends 1! Really good old dayssss

  • 3 wheelers '80's music oh yeah love it

sorry for the metal heads that see my name on here but i see this is your guilty pleasure too

  • I looked up the hotel where he died in hawaii and it is very sad. I lived in hawaii for some years and was always a big bc fan and this hotel is just so far from waikiki and so isolated and sad.

  • don't forget the feeling he gave us with this song!!

    GOD BLESS

and as always its a BIG COUNTRY!!

  • I think this song is awesome always puts me in a good mood, so the singer passed away?!

  • Stuart Adamson was a big country member, and we do remember!

  • Brilliant band this, I do find the whole Scottish angle amusing though baring in mind none of the band were actually born in Scotland!!!

  • A part of ireland called scotland brilliant song

  • Thanks for a great song Stuart. RIP

  • What a great 80's band! Brings back great memories. Rest in peace Stuart.

  • they should have had more hits in the u.s. they were talented i just recently became a fan of theirs but after i heard this song i was like who is this and i cant believe how some bands from the 80's weren't bigger than what they should have been and Big Country is one of those bands

  • @ibelievein30STM

you can put "Slade" in that category too, my friend!

  • ohhh yeah i know slade they are awesome noddy holder has great vocals im remembering listening to run runaway as a kid i wouldnt know such great music if it wasnt for my parents lol

  • i like 1:15 when that guy makes his guitar sound like a keyboard set on bagpipe, its rare when a guy takes his skills in that direction

  • The part of Ireland called Scotland?? Wow, world maps must have changed over time..I've always thought Scotland was the most northern part of Great Britain:) I hope you were only joking mate...

  • I'm pretty sure mashtones was just correcting unremoved and being sarcastic

  • i got this cd and is written on it they are from Scotland but they love the eletronic band Pin Number

  • RIP Stuart :(

  • They are from the part of Ireland called Scotland.

  • Am from the west of Ireland and 20 years ago these guys were huge over there, must be some celtic strings in there somewhere, class song amongst many.Good on yer Stu !!!

  • wow, they look like they're having the adventure of their lifetimes. i love outdoor stuff.

  • Where is this wonderful music from?

  • They're from Ireland! The most inspiring line: "I'm not expectin' to grow flowers in a desert, but I can look and breathe and see the sun in wintertime."

  • I love this song but are they really riding cross country, checking tides and repelling just to bang this below average girl?

  • Comment removed

  • i stand corrected. while i still blame the eighties, she is tina, a band member.

  • a never took the smile away from anybodys face !!!! rip mate !!!!

  • love that song!!!!

  • i'm love this song a lot it's great, and i wasn't even born when it came out haha

  • Dreams stay with you like a lovers voice on a mountain side! Always love this....Love from Detroit!

  • Cool comment Detroit friend....nice one brother....

  • theres at least 2 from Detroit that like this...me....u

  • they should have gone farther, they were a good band. and this is a classic song.

  • This is one of those great songs thats sounds new & has a timeless sound.

I hated to here of the singers demise.any gets a chance my band tattoo billy has a new video up called man you love to hateif any one gets a chance to view

  • adventurous lads, weren't they?

  • good song i remember hearing it during a mission on gta vice city, i think it was called the driver

  • it's only kool to name ur album after ur band not a song. good song though

  • no black sabbath for mr metal? great song also, kidding i gave you a thumbs up.

  • Big Country...a very unique band in their own right wit a lot of celtic influence.

Doubt anyone else will repeat their sound in our life time

  • thi is mine n my uncles song n i love it n i dont care who takes the piss is the best song i have herd n iv known this song for years n years

  • Not sure I follow your entire explanation, but you & your uncle are freakin' cool!

  • great song but they got their asses kicked by one woman ok there was five of them and they got their asses kicked????

  • hey, be fair... there was only FOUR of them!! LOL

    And she was in leather.

  • im just 15 year old but i like it and i dont even know the 80's =P but i like there music ^^

  • Here's a blast from the pasI saw them in one of their reunion concerts in Scotland back in 1999.

I will never forget the 15, December 2001.

The day I heard that Stuart Adamson had killed himself in a hotel room in Honolulu.

I heard that for years Adamson would dissapear for months on end., never telling anyone where he was.

Does anyone know why he did this?

Did the guy suffer from depression?

Adamson and Big Country changed music forever! RIP Stuart Adamson

  • No matter what your favorite genre of music is you cant help but like this song! <coming from Metalhead

  • Big Countrys music will never fade away... unlike the X-factor winners one hit wonders etc

Big Country are as big as the beatles in my opinion, just not as well known...although they should have been!

  • Big Country had many hits! Perhaops not in America but they did in Europe; "Fields of Fire," Look Away," and of course,"In a Big Country!" I agree with you 100% Big Country Changed music and openned the door for many other groups! I'm still missing Stuart Adamson! RIP

  • R.I.P. Stuart Adamson

  • AMAZING SONG!!!! It's kinda a shame that this was pretty much there only song that made it big...but whatever. I still lover this song!

  • love this song. they really didn't make it as a band though.

  • One hit wonder, but AWESOME!

  • Rest in peace sweet Stu for you have achieved something that billions of people can only dream of which is to bring joy to so many people during your lifetime.

  • poor quality

  • HUM..... A molecadinha de hoje não deve nem saber que essa banda existe ! kkkkk - Nada melhor do que um bom e velho som de qualidade !

  • verdade.. to pra fazer um site sobre músicas e filmes antigos, Big Country certamente será mencionado.

  • I love must have lots of songs I Love)))))))thank Umusic from the 80"s, i tried to sub & I allreay dyd thank U)

  • R.I.P STU

  • Love it.

The fact these guys never went commercial and stadium (as loads at the time thought they would) and stayed kind of unsanitised makes them more appealing than contemporaries like U2.

  • Sometimes life is unseen and I close my eyes to regain meaning. With eyes closed I still am missing the point, so further behind I fall. Sadness of being left out starts to become fuel to meet my maker. Stop missing and start living. I must appreciate what I have. There is fact not opinion, I am alive.

  • back when videos and 3 wheelers were cool

  • A great Countryman..fantastic band,,,,how sad..I loved these guys........we cant replace them.......ever....outdoors and music and culture rocks! God bless! Kickin ass!

  • what did he say at 2:35 - 2:36 ?

  • LOVE it. So sad that the lead singer died.

  • My Favorite song of all time! I wish they would remaster.

  • I remember first seeing this song on Friday Night Videos and was blown away! This song still rocks 26 years later! RIP Adam - you are missed!

  • My dad used to watch that when I was really little. That is why he is so knowledgeable about 80's music!

This is one of his favorite 80's tunes.

My mom still gripes to my dad that the reason she doesn't know any of these pop 80's classics is because she was too busy raising my sister and I:)

  • shut the hell up erikmann.

  • Comment removed

  • Wasnt that Michael Hutchence...or was that David Caradine? Or was it...

  • i think there was a suspicion that david carradine died that way

  • The tragedy is he left behind his children, and he was a talented singer and guitarist

  • It makes me very sad...to watch this and know the lead singer is dead.

  • hes so hot

  • So he had probs...poor comments..it can happen to us all...poor comments...look at yourself!

  • WHAT HAPPENED TO THE MOTORCYCLE!?!? @ 1:36 it turns into a 4th ATV!?

  • yeahhh good song

  • no he did not drink himself to death. He drank until he was drunk then he hung himself

  • Yeah so if he wasn't drinkin......he wouldn't have hung himself. He drank to the point of killing himself. He drank himself to death.

Or of course it may have been a tragic case of "spontaneous hangus yourselfus" that interupted a perfectly harmless cocktail.

  • he hung himself in hawaii, at a best western motel i've been to many times. ah, scottish poison.

  • how long ago.... never mind ill google it.

  • He drank himself to DEATH!

  • Ha, I love how they close with the dude abseiling (rappelling) to rescue the girl (looks cool and is pretty easy) and then they hook up to go... where. Unless there's a winch or something up top you've got to get out by climbing (doesn't look as cool and is not very easy). Fun song.

  • Tell me about it. I've just started to rock climb. I am at like pee-wee level and I'm 27. So sad:(

  • He's rappelling on what looks like a Figure 8. I use a figure 8 ALL the time. Even with the new rappelling devices I find an "8," still works best for me. I climb using a "Shunt." It locks onto the rope and allows free (upward only) pulling provided it is not weighted. Right before he is on the ground it shows the figure 8, but even then it is hard to tell. They could have an ascender to get out with. Or a boat. That little "Rap," looks fun though!

  • Lovely song! Sad about lead singer though:(

  • WoW...True awesomeness. I remember back in the early 80s when all seemed possible & all seemed infinite, Simple Minds, U2, The Alarm, The Call, Big Country, & Tears 4 Fears were all gonna B huge mega-stars & change mankind & the world & rule the universe 4 all eternity.........SIGH

  • You mean they never did?

Of course they did. For every single person they touch -- and change that person's world for the better (and I would argue, the universe and mankind)-- they already did the job a long time ago, for many thousands (or millions) of people.

It depends on how you look at things. From all times.

  • Not to change the subject of the comments but I have had this song stuck in my head ever since I stumbled across this video a few days ago. Does anybody know if Big Country released a greatest hits album? And if so is it something I could get in the states. Just curious. Thanks:)

  • Their greatest hits is called THROUGH A BIG COUNTRY on mercury records ref no 846 022-2 its one of the bast albums i have

  • Thank You! Much appreciation:)

  • this song was stuck in my head all day for some reason lol

    awesome song!

  • I was a year old when this came out but I do remember my father having the record and listening to it on weekends. Not when I was one of course!

Love the song, the message, and the video.

BTW, thinking of traveling to Scotland. Is there a good time of year to go? ( I'm in America BTW)

  • RIP Stuart Adamson....You were Big Country! You are missed.

  • loads of songs chance and feilds of fire are the best in my opinion

  • one of the greatest songs from the 80s. It never gets old. Too bad we never heard anything else from them.

  • are you nuts, do you know how many albums they had out, do you know how many concert tours there were, I saw them in jock land. i saw them twice in my home town, london, get an understanding, and knowledge before commenting

  • fuck you , you inbred gap tooth cock suck and I've been to London and it stank like piss and shit

  • yes i remember that smell, it was fine once you left

  • man, the guy below is an idiot, no doubt. but if you're going to generalize and further hate, than you're no better. you don't see me going around saying EVERY brit has horribal oral hygiene, do you? generalizations are dangerous. stooping to his level is none better..

  • not quite sure why you have written a rotten comment? my comment was not rude or mean, but I guess you being american, it's in your blood to be rude and mean.

  • hey redredreds!!! Don't lump all Americans in the same category as that moron!!! We're not all rude and mean, just like not all Brits are arrogant and pale!

  • just look you will find an amazing treasure of big country

  • Coming for BAND HERO.

  • great post

  • I forgot how much I loved this song as a kid. IMO a metal version of this would be a geat cover for a set.

  • its a scottish thing your not ment to get us or any video for that matter, its a great song dont focus on video mate

  • can someone explain the vid? I don't get it...:\

  • very Scottish sound <3

  • Awesome song! Makes me want to dance!

  • brilliant song and the video is still awesome!

  • wow i love this song yerrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  • singer reminds me of Corey Feldman.

  • lol. Off topic but love him (Corey Feldman) in License To Drive....

  • My friends think it's weird i like this song.

But man, i'm in love with it, it's brilliant.

Just reminds me of a good time.

  • It's a feel good song nothing weird about it if u ask me!

  • Really good early MTV music video. RIP Stuart.

  • Doesn't Stuart Anderson look like Morten Harket of A-ha? :-}

  • first time I saw the guy I thought same thing. :D

  • Stuart Adamson had a 'square chin' like Morten Harket; end of; both handsome blokes;1 totally unique and never to be forgotten; the other; hmmm...not bad looks and voice; but totally nothing in comparison...jeez...i got teased about this yrs ago...my bro who'd rather watch paint dry; he ended up with free ticket to see Queen at Knebworth; whilst i had to pay; then declared that Big Country actually weren't that bad....hmmmmm

  • that singer has such a baby face

  • great song. That's a pitty I knew it only after 2000.

  • I've heard it as teenager age 16/17. Where does time go ....... i'm 44 now?

  • know how you feel mate. seems like only a few yrs ago.

  • This is going to be in Band Hero

  • Mountain Lab

  • one of the coolest videos from the MTV cool days. Love the way that lass lays those boys out, very funny.

  • My favorite thing about this is the 3 wheelers. A hilarious anachronism now that they have been illegal for years.

  • I have said that Jim Kerr of Simple Minds was my first Scottish crush but noting the time this song came out it was probably Stuart first. Either way the Scots are the finest people ever. I was very bothered when Stuart died.

  • The singer looks like a cross between a Jewish Patrick Swayze and a Scottish Dan Akroyd

  • Can we please stop saying 'the singer'? His name is Stuart and he is the best singer and song writer of all time. He isn't a cross between anyone, he was solely himself. There's no one like him and there never will be.

  • love the guitar sound on this

  • Heard this at this RI Air Show in June (it wasn't with the planes- I was waiting for the bus back) and I've been in love with it ever since.

  • Scottish singing legends were definitely Stuart Adamson here and Billy Mackenzie of the Associates - RIP to you both !!

  • This singer guy is a cross between Patrick Swayze and Dan Akroyd

  • Love BC.

  • Corfe Castle, Swanage seafront & the cliffs near Old Harry's Rock. Welcome to the Isle of Purbeck!

  • great lead melody, makes me want to wear Harris Tweed
