although i like her songs, i disagree with people's opinions that she was better than madonna...madonna was not only the best female singer of the 80's but she's the GOAT = Greatest Of All Time
And please could some New Yorker (or any American) please pronounce with AUTHORITY precisely what part of New York Cyndi's accent comes from for us Brits who love these accents but who have only ever heard them on films/videos !!?
The insight into Cyndi's working methods at end is what fascinates me: Listening to the mistakes or unintended random effects and getting inspiration from them to develop the arrangement. HOW TRUE THAT IS! And how wise too. What an ear she's got. Yes - and what a mouth too (both singing and speaking modes!). I cannot tell you how grateful I am for you uploading this classic, historic performance (& interview)
If anyone here wants to hear the original version, performed exactly as the author intended, you can find it under "All Through The Night-Jules Shear". It is a GHASTLY thing:a kind of Polka/Country song that is barely listenable! Cyndi was somehow able to hear it and detect the song had "good bones" whereas she proceeded to literally rebuild it from the ground up. With her delicate, exquisite voice and a complettely new arrangement she breathed new life into the song, turning it into a classic!
I heard this one morning before the show. This is the of the greatest live events ever on Stern. He really wanted her to make this right..... AWESOME !!!!
Leaving Howard Stern's vacuous, cringeworthy and embarassing comments aside (and it is clear that Cyndi found them so too) this gave some fascinating insights into Cyndi and her band's working methods. Thanks
@Babyhowdy Ooh thx for gettin me to listen again! It's incredible isn't it? At 53 she delivers this staggering performance which melted my heart once more. ''We have no past...". ooooh - those gorgeous top notes! It's a fusion of the old and new versions. It's not better -but brillliant all the same & a tribute to potential in original song. She made this song out of a bland original. That's some skill. But the lyrics are so moving too - makes you nostalgic and treasure every moment doesn't it?
Brilliant video ... thanks for posting. I love how you edit perfectly, at certain points, Cyndi's interview/performance to match her live performance. And 4:09 was so random, but funny...
Chez , this is the original written by Jules Shear and performed on his album Watchdog . This is so much better than the pop tune isn't it ? Cyndi Lauper is the best female RandR singer of all time ...no contest .
As far as 80s chicks go, Cyndi had it all over Madonna as far as I'm concerned. Cyndi is pure awesome....so talented, down to earth, and still sexy as heck.
omg loooveeddd ur comments.. made my day!:... cyndi is a wonderfull person I MEAN SHE LOVESS HER FANS and she really take care of them . and madonna is a fuckin asshole beyotch who practicly splited on my friend's face.. and she is not talented as cyndi is !
I stumbled upon this version in another video on youtube, this one is great too. She is really talented. Hard to believe she is 55 years old now. I honestly do not know which version I like better, this new on or the original, but I am leaning towards this new one!
AMAZING! I loved her when I was a little kid back in the 80's, but I had no idea back then that she was so damn talented! I can't get enough of this! Ten times better than anything she recorded in the studio!
Still gorgeous at 53 years young :)

Cyndi Lauper was doing those unconventional, beautiful things with her voice years before Shakira even exist as a pro singer.

Good editing job. It even makes Stern not sounding too
offensive.

It's a shame people focus on Stern's offensive statements when he gives us gems like these.
