  • Which head is best for Metal/punk

  • Great Video! Very helpful!

Personally, I'll stick with my Ambassadors and use removable dampeners as needed. I can't afford to purchase new heads for everything I do. If I'm playing a Latin/Ska/Reggae/Surf Rock vibe I don't want anything on there. If I need my snare to sound like a pillow, I'll add some Moon Gel or Tape. Removable is good. Keeps my sound versatile.

Anyway, that's totally beyond what I wanted to comment. I just wanted to say this was a great video! Really intuitive comparison!

  • Powerstroke 3 <3 :)

  • I like the powerstroke. It doesn't have the "ping" that the others have, just a pure beefy snare sound.

  • I'm an evans guy but much respect to Remo and their quality products. I'm a fan of the PowerStroke 3.

  • evans EC or G1 coated

  • Thanks (:

  • are they all tuned to the same point?

  • Personally the Coated Ambassador has the best "metallic" sound that I like to get out of my steel snare. It also isn't too muffled like the controlled sound head, but rather has a good ring as it tapers off.

  • So I know the round baffle that is placed in the middle of the snare

  • @CHayes1993 If youre talking about the round bit in the middle of the remo coated controlled sound, it comes with it, you dont put it on afterwards. but if you're on about the rongs that people put around the outside of the snare, they're called 'o-rings' :)

  • @theobjectivesband *rings

  • You could tell me how to call the round object to muffle the snare drum

  • You could tell me how to call the round object to put the snare

  • powerstroke 3 for me

  • @XTheSonofTheSunX yeah it sounds the best

  • bought controlled sound today, after 30 minutes of tuning, got very good and soft sound, its a very good head, got tama imperialstar, tune it good ;)

  • Powerstroke 3 hands down.

  • i guess thats a question about what u want to play, should it be warm und clear or cold and not so clear, so i would say all of them are good ;D

  • Its that sabian troll again :D

  • I have Controlled Sound heads on all my toms and snare right now-really nice, fat warm tone, very little ring.

  • coated ambassador

  • That Ambassador is begging to be cranked up.

  • Remo coated controlled sound sounds pretty good.

  • Power stroke 3

  • I like to use Powerstroke 3, defs sounds the best, in my opinion

  • 7545445455445454545454454545454454545445454554454545454545544554545544545454545445845454546456454564554887878787878878779778798787978979879879879879879879879887978978987978878787787787878788787878798777877978798797879887979879879789797777877777789787788777878787887877887878788778787878787778788778787878787

  • Controlled Sound, you only have to pitch it high

  • id rather dampen the small amount of ring on the ambassador or the controlled sound then use the powerstroke 3 and take away all the character of the drum

  • power stroke 3 sounds so good.

  • The second is the best

  • I know this guy, i think he's from sabian videos.

  • rapais coloca uma pele porosa ai e estica o maximo q poder

  • idk, I like my coated pinstripe. but going G2 coated soon.

  • my snare came with a genera hd dry and i'm trying to get away from that sound. it's way to snappy and does not have resonance or body in my opinion, i hear way to much wire sound and it's not deep sounding, unless that's just my snare but i don't know yet, haven't had it for long. it's an artwood, anyway, i notice the powerstroke doesn't have much resonance but still seems to have a body. does the genera hd dry sound similar to the power stroke?

  • they all suck.

  • @IronFabianSteel evans guy huh!

  • @xDaNiEldrummerx nah bro, aquarian drumheads XDD

  • put a piece of alufoil on that snare and it would sound nice

  • Get it, Head to Head?

  • shitty snare comapny so it doesnt matter

  • I think the powestroke sonds great, but I think Remo coated ambassador sounds incredibly good!!!

  • Used the Powerstroke 3 for a while, like the short tone a lot for Metal. Switched to Evans Genera Dry Coated at the moment and liking that a lot as well. It's all down to flavor as always :)

  • Powerstroke 3 can sound so much better. I have it on a regular Pearl Sensitone metalic snare and it brings out all the punch with a very good tone.

But on this video yes, the Coated Ambassador sounds great. Depends on the snare, the recording equipment (and crew), and ultimately, depends on your taste!

  • I'll take an Evans Genera dry, thank you

  • That Ambassador sounds sexy.

  • Remo Coated Emperor X still rules. :))

  • What torque on the Drum Dial would this be on top and bottom?

    Thanks.

  • Is it a clear powerstroke or coated?

  • @beaulolp dude, look at it.

  • @xEverAfter Hahaha I was gonna say the same thing!!

  • just switched from controlled sound to ambassdor for a recording...live go with CS because it will last twice as long as an ambassador...go with the ambassador for extra sensitivity so you can hear all those ghost notes

  • I have the controlled sound, but the ambassador is awesome

  • i like power stroke and after coated ambassador

  • I'm using the controlled sound and I think its pretty good for my style. I might grab a coated ambassador soon for shits and giggles.

  • got the coated controlled sound and i love it!

  • Comment removed

  • anybody know what kind of snare this is? love the punk rock sound it gives with the CS coated

  • ps really really helpful video cheers!

  • I've always been told go ambassador but in general I really don't like hearing high overtones hanging on well after the attack, for me Powerstroke 3 sounds the best just because it gets rid of that ringing.

  • @pjftl i totally understand what you mean dude! i mean, personally, i like a little bit of it if im playing like, straight rock or old punk, but if im playing anything else like metal, pop punk, etc, an almost dead sound is more appropriate

i like one with overtones to the left of my hihat as like, an extra :P haha

  • @pjftl without killing the drum completely! I agree.

  • AMBASSADOR, the standard for excellence.

  • Coated controlled sound

  • my choice is power stroke, but i think they all are great!

  • Remo Coated Controlled Sound FTW! Very Metal ^^ \m/

  • powerstroke 3 is so bonham :)

  • i'd choose the powerstroke 3

  • Not a remo guy myself, but definitely have to go with the p23 in this case. They should do a head to head with the Hi-velocity, High Energy and Texture Coated from Aquarian

  • @JerryCymurderborg Ps3 I meant

  • not a remo fan, but power stroke 3

  • Coated Ambassador by far

  • I've actually have a CS coated and it sound a lot lower than an ambassador and it look otherwise in the video lol on my supraphonic keystone (60's) aluminium snare (14 X 5) with an ambassador for reso but I think ill go with a NON hazy diplomat for reso hazy sound like crap too thin...

  • its a matter of personal taste! I vote for the powerstroke but the other two are great too!

  • Ill put my nutts on the powerstroke all day

  • Coated Ambassador all the way.

  • @TheSkylie In my opinion Evans Genera HD dry is way better then remos

  • @newbiepl i got a snare that came with one of those and i couldn't make it sound right untill i changed it to a really dented and bent ambassador and it made it sound way better to me. i probably was just tuning wrong for that head but it sounded to snappy. i got it to sound good but then i went to play with my band using it and it sounded the opposite, hummy and pappery, not even like a snare it was weird, did cut through very well. i'm very confused, i'm sure it's a great head.

  • @newbiepl i feel you. the genera hd is the tits

  • i'm going to say powerstroke but that's because i like a short snare sound instead of one that rings out. but if i did like it to ring out i'd go with controlled sound

  • love the pop in the Coated control :D sounds awesome !

  • Thank you for this video! Power stroke 3 is the best for Rock Pop. I never have heard it before. I will buy it.

  • i like the heads but i dont like the tuning so i cant decide

  • power strock 3

  • i like the ambassador

  • I use an Emperor coated on the snare. Not bad, but my snare is just very loud all the time, I've tried a lot of snare heads, any suggestions?

  • @lpjdrummer12295 if it is loud and you want to control it you can use emperor x with dammpening or maybe an HD genera dry

  • Power Stroke!!!! Full!!!!! =)

  • I just bought the REMO Coated Embassador about a month ago and I love the sound you can get with it. However, the controlled sound head sounded more like what I, personally, am looking for. I'll have to try that one out soon.

  • 1:11 sounds like a piano Sound! :D

    But very nice video...

    Ambassador!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • PS3>Ambassador>Controlled

  • coated controled sound

  • powerstroke 3

i dont like a ring in my snare drums

  • coated ambassador. i use them for my snares

  • 1.) Coated Ambassador

    2.) Coated Controlled Sound

    3.) Power Stroke 3

That's my opinion... three months before I were in studio with my music group and it sounds really beautifully... You can hear it there: /watch?v=aS1bKN-6lYE (3x w.yt.com)

  • ill gonna buy me the controlled sound next time.

  • Press 7 to hear a drum roll of the three

  • man Powestroke 3 sounds so dead

  • @HEYYitsMEyou I like how the powerstroke 3 sounded, probobly my favorite out of the 3

  • @HEYYitsMEyou and that's why i prefer it.

  • @HEYYitsMEyou Works well on a 14x6.5 steel snare though because the snare is really open sounding and has that steel 'ring'.

  • @Oli4drums i have a 14x6.5 steel snare but i use a controlled sound, it gives a lot of attack and a nice amount of ring

  • @HEYYitsMEyou Hmm. Powerstroke is really dense. I crank my snare up pretty damn tight so it has shit tons of attack. And rimshots sound incredible. What's your snare? just out of curiosity.

  • @Oli4drums it's a mapex black panther... it's fucking sweet.. love the sound on it.

  • CONTROLLED SOUND!

  • powerstroke 3 is the best for me!

  • PS3 (nothing with Sony :-)

  • All 3 are great, I'd use all for different songs. Although controlled sound is really heavy, that would be the main head in the studio, for the stage I'd go for p3, cuz its clean and gets out of the way quickly.

  • Power stroke 3 :D

  • still loving the ambassador

  • @devilzreality93 I totally agree!!!! Nice pop and lets the drum breathe. Has more life I think!!

  • Power stroke 3 sounds awesome

  • @UnitFmX11 If your snare drum is made of a metal (Supraphonics, Pearl Exports, Luwwig Acrolites, and so on) Then, itll be fine. But, if yours is made of wood, then I wouldn't crank it up TOO high. Like if it feels hard to tighten, and it's a wood snare, LOWER YOUR TUNING! But, if it feels that way and you have a metal snare drum, then don't sweat it.

  • Remo Power Stroke 3 |m|

  • powerstroke 3---> BAM

  • I like the power stroke 3.

  • AMBASSADOR is where it's AT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mostly because it's the one I have lol

  • power stroke 3!!

  • POWER STROKE 3

  • i don't really like any of them. i use an emperor on my snare.

  • Powerstroke anything on a snare is like playing a guitar with mud on the strings. Powerstrokes choke the drum and give you NO sensitivity whatsoever, which basically defeats the purpose of a snare drum. All the baddies who like the P3 are the same types of drummers who do nothing but play shitty backbeats all day with no variation.

  • AMBASSADOR

  • I WANT THEM ALL! they all sound differant D:

  • Just got coated ambassador and would DEFF recomend for any one love it!!!!

  • Lol notice how he's putting marks on the head

  • @KDWorldBrickPix Implying this isn't normal?

  • I like the coated ambassador best and i gotta get a new head soon and i think ive found it so thanks a ton gearguruz

  • Controlled sound 24/7

  • power stroke is where its AT!

  • @TheSchoolsux345 Yeah it has a nice sound.

  • with the powerstroke, every single hit is visible, bad for ocd people for me.

  • Personally, I liked Power Stroke 3 best, but then again, you could probably take the coated Ambassador and stuck some gaffer tape on it...

  • ambassador is the best.

  • All good, depending on your snare and sound you want to produce..... But on this test with this Spaun snare drum, I'm going with the PS3..... The controlled sound had a tinny overtone to it, and the coated Ambassador is the standard work horse and did sound good on this snare as well..... Thanks for the cool test video!!!

  • could you please do a video like this but comparing heads for the kickdrum instead? :) would be cool.

  • Gotta be the Powerstroke 3!!!

  • so what was the torque? the tuning sounds amazing

  • i prefer ludwig heads.

  • REMO FREAKING CONTROLLED SOUND!

  • CS Coated for sure.

  • I have Lars Ulrich snare, Which Remo drumhead would be the best that didn't sound like a 'tin can'? After this video I like Powerstroke 3. But what do you think about Emperor X Coated ?

  • @kRetman4 I use a CS on my Lars. It's what he uses as well.

  • It's that sabian troll again!

  • coated head

  • @UnitFmX11 Haters be learners.

  • my snare batter head is a black suede emperor and ive tuned it up way sharp so i can easily do things like open rolls and other rudiments. is this in any way damaging to the head or the drum itself?

  • Coated controlled sound!! Lovely sound.

  • skip to 1:18 and listen to the three different heads repeatedly

  • Hi Doug,

It would be great to have you Review Lento Percussion's Products:

The Triplet Drum Gloves and Super Sticks Drum Sticks!

    Best

  • DO EVANS VS REMO!!

  • @yoshiskato Bro Evans heads are terrible compared to REMO

  • @yoshiskato Remo wins

  • My S.S teacher uses a Marching snare head cause he brakes all the other ones lol

  • Im all about Remo heads, but i have an HD dry Evans snare head hahaha I will live with nothing but remo, except for that snare head haha

  • I just love coated cs with my old ludwig acrolite.. They're perfect pair :)

  • i bought powerstroke 3 but i didn't like it that much. i like ambassador more

  • CS dot is the one for me.

  • I'l play metal alt ... what kind of drum heads should i use ? PLEASE.

  • @Yaden1412 Controlled Sound.

  • @joshuachan56 THANKS ... but I've heard that emperor x is better than it

  • @Yaden1412 I'm currently using the Emperor X lol. That head is good but it has a lot setbacks...

    1. The head is SO THICK that you have to crank the head ALL THE WAY to make it sound good. Low or Medium tension is a bad idea.

    2. The stick rebound is pretty bad. If you want more rebound, get a thinner head.

    3. It doesn't sound as good as 1-ply drumheads. But still, it can sound good.

Other than that, it's a good drumhead and it is durable as hell. I recommend you get the Controlled Sound though :)

  • @joshuachan56 ouh ... thaks! I really appreciated ur help, have u listen Breaking Benjamin or three days grace? i want a sound like this! like metal alt. again, thanks

  • i think that controled sound is the best :)

  • Comment removed

  • Coated ambassador

  • Nice editing job on this video. Did a great job of distinguishing the differences in heads in a really concise, easy to follow way. Oh, and I like the CS the best. The Ambassador rings too much and the PS is too dry.

  • Team PowerStroke 3¡¡¡

  • powerstroke!

  • I throw the controlled sound on my black beauty and my tiny little pearl snare has the powerstroke make the Ludwig fat and punchy and the pearl higher and very crisp

  • Coated Ambassador... I just love the tone without all the ringing.

  • PS3.
