Personally, I'll stick with my Ambassadors and use removable dampeners as needed. I can't afford to purchase new heads for everything I do. If I'm playing a Latin/Ska/Reggae/Surf Rock vibe I don't want anything on there. If I need my snare to sound like a pillow, I'll add some Moon Gel or Tape. Removable is good. Keeps my sound versatile.
Anyway, that's totally beyond what I wanted to comment. I just wanted to say this was a great video! Really intuitive comparison!
Personally the Coated Ambassador has the best "metallic" sound that I like to get out of my steel snare. It also isn't too muffled like the controlled sound head, but rather has a good ring as it tapers off.
@CHayes1993 If youre talking about the round bit in the middle of the remo coated controlled sound, it comes with it, you dont put it on afterwards. but if you're on about the rongs that people put around the outside of the snare, they're called 'o-rings' :)
id rather dampen the small amount of ring on the ambassador or the controlled sound then use the powerstroke 3 and take away all the character of the drum
my snare came with a genera hd dry and i'm trying to get away from that sound. it's way to snappy and does not have resonance or body in my opinion, i hear way to much wire sound and it's not deep sounding, unless that's just my snare but i don't know yet, haven't had it for long. it's an artwood, anyway, i notice the powerstroke doesn't have much resonance but still seems to have a body. does the genera hd dry sound similar to the power stroke?
Used the Powerstroke 3 for a while, like the short tone a lot for Metal. Switched to Evans Genera Dry Coated at the moment and liking that a lot as well. It's all down to flavor as always :)
Powerstroke 3 can sound so much better. I have it on a regular Pearl Sensitone metalic snare and it brings out all the punch with a very good tone.
But on this video yes, the Coated Ambassador sounds great. Depends on the snare, the recording equipment (and crew), and ultimately, depends on your taste!
just switched from controlled sound to ambassdor for a recording...live go with CS because it will last twice as long as an ambassador...go with the ambassador for extra sensitivity so you can hear all those ghost notes
I've always been told go ambassador but in general I really don't like hearing high overtones hanging on well after the attack, for me Powerstroke 3 sounds the best just because it gets rid of that ringing.
@pjftl i totally understand what you mean dude! i mean, personally, i like a little bit of it if im playing like, straight rock or old punk, but if im playing anything else like metal, pop punk, etc, an almost dead sound is more appropriate
i like one with overtones to the left of my hihat as like, an extra :P haha
Not a remo guy myself, but definitely have to go with the p23 in this case. They should do a head to head with the Hi-velocity, High Energy and Texture Coated from Aquarian
I've actually have a CS coated and it sound a lot lower than an ambassador and it look otherwise in the video lol on my supraphonic keystone (60's) aluminium snare (14 X 5) with an ambassador for reso but I think ill go with a NON hazy diplomat for reso hazy sound like crap too thin...
@newbiepl i got a snare that came with one of those and i couldn't make it sound right untill i changed it to a really dented and bent ambassador and it made it sound way better to me. i probably was just tuning wrong for that head but it sounded to snappy. i got it to sound good but then i went to play with my band using it and it sounded the opposite, hummy and pappery, not even like a snare it was weird, did cut through very well. i'm very confused, i'm sure it's a great head.
i'm going to say powerstroke but that's because i like a short snare sound instead of one that rings out. but if i did like it to ring out i'd go with controlled sound
I just bought the REMO Coated Embassador about a month ago and I love the sound you can get with it. However, the controlled sound head sounded more like what I, personally, am looking for. I'll have to try that one out soon.
That's my opinion... three months before I were in studio with my music group and it sounds really beautifully... You can hear it there: /watch?v=aS1bKN-6lYE (3x w.yt.com)
@HEYYitsMEyou Hmm. Powerstroke is really dense. I crank my snare up pretty damn tight so it has shit tons of attack. And rimshots sound incredible. What's your snare? just out of curiosity.
All 3 are great, I'd use all for different songs. Although controlled sound is really heavy, that would be the main head in the studio, for the stage I'd go for p3, cuz its clean and gets out of the way quickly.
@UnitFmX11 If your snare drum is made of a metal (Supraphonics, Pearl Exports, Luwwig Acrolites, and so on) Then, itll be fine. But, if yours is made of wood, then I wouldn't crank it up TOO high. Like if it feels hard to tighten, and it's a wood snare, LOWER YOUR TUNING! But, if it feels that way and you have a metal snare drum, then don't sweat it.
Powerstroke anything on a snare is like playing a guitar with mud on the strings. Powerstrokes choke the drum and give you NO sensitivity whatsoever, which basically defeats the purpose of a snare drum. All the baddies who like the P3 are the same types of drummers who do nothing but play shitty backbeats all day with no variation.
All good, depending on your snare and sound you want to produce..... But on this test with this Spaun snare drum, I'm going with the PS3..... The controlled sound had a tinny overtone to it, and the coated Ambassador is the standard work horse and did sound good on this snare as well..... Thanks for the cool test video!!!
I have Lars Ulrich snare, Which Remo drumhead would be the best that didn't sound like a 'tin can'? After this video I like Powerstroke 3. But what do you think about Emperor X Coated ?
my snare batter head is a black suede emperor and ive tuned it up way sharp so i can easily do things like open rolls and other rudiments. is this in any way damaging to the head or the drum itself?
@joshuachan56 ouh ... thaks! I really appreciated ur help, have u listen Breaking Benjamin or three days grace? i want a sound like this! like metal alt. again, thanks
Nice editing job on this video. Did a great job of distinguishing the differences in heads in a really concise, easy to follow way. Oh, and I like the CS the best. The Ambassador rings too much and the PS is too dry.
I throw the controlled sound on my black beauty and my tiny little pearl snare has the powerstroke make the Ludwig fat and punchy and the pearl higher and very crisp

@joshuachan56 THANKS ... but I've heard that emperor x is better than it
Yaden1412 3 months ago
@Yaden1412 I'm currently using the Emperor X lol. That head is good but it has a lot setbacks...
1. The head is SO THICK that you have to crank the head ALL THE WAY to make it sound good. Low or Medium tension is a bad idea.
2. The stick rebound is pretty bad. If you want more rebound, get a thinner head.
3. It doesn't sound as good as 1-ply drumheads. But still, it can sound good.
Other than that, it's a good drumhead and it is durable as hell. I recommend you get the Controlled Sound though :)
