  • love this song much than the others....it reminds me of my childhood realities....

  • Try not to create a story of sadness, but tell a story of myself!

  • Awesome!! kj

  • it's amazing--the first time i heard this in 1st grade like 7 years ago, i thought it was just about her friend and their imagination (as i didnt understand it) and now that i can listen to it again, it's a whoole [a]nother thing.

  • the most beautiful and sad story of innocence lost. Cindi always draws you in.

  • Love It!...

    :)

  • i 1st herd this on Cyndi's myspace and fell in love with it<3

  • yes,it's julia as the young cyndi.

  • 1.32 - is that julia styles?

  • yeah she is

  • wow, this song is actually really nice on the ear

  • i love this song...

  • Went to see her on Saturday at Southampton, she forgot the words to this. But we played it all the way back home in the car.

    Great show. Great song.

  • I'm real undecided on the issue because eitha way somebody dies.If abortion stays legal, many potential lifesavers will continually be killed and there are girls who won't learn responsibility. But then again if it becomes against the law, many women will die like Sally, or worse, spend the rest of their lives permanently scarred from the back alley jobs.So I won't take a side.

  • This is a great song...With a sad topic

  • this is why abortion must NEVER EVER be allowed to be illegal again. You will never stop people having them, but you can stop them from being dangerous.

  • From the very first time I heard this song (I bought the "Twelve Deadly Cyns" album) it struck me as being so full of emotion. It makes me cry most of the time.

At first I didn't realize that it was about abortion, but now everytime I hear it, it just makes me very glad to live in a country (Netherlands) where church and state are fairly separate, and abortion is legal.

  • i read that this song is based on a friend that cyndi lauper had that died from having a back alley abortion it so sad!!!

  • Cyndi is not stupid

    she sings beautiful songs

  • Oh thats sad

  • i just listened to this song for the first time and its amazing. and ya know what else ? i dont care what anybody else thinks what this song is about unless its in a positive way. this song is beautiful. if a 15 year old guy can appreciate this song everybody else should to. cyndisnumber2

  • The little girl, not Sally, is Julia Stiles! Have a look :)

  • Isn't Sally the man with the pigeons?

  • No! Sally is the girl who went on to have a back street abortion. The man is her Dad.

  • Not as if Cyndi told me herself, but if you listen, "Sally" is definitely a guy; it's undoubtedly short for Salvatore. I knew plenty of guys in Boston that were called "Sal" for short (and one even owned trained pigeons)... so alicewendon's probably right on the money. 'Kay? it doesn't change the meaning of the song...

  • I like this song its sad I think its about a girl loseing her friend

  • THIS SONG IS ABOUT ABORTION, when cyndi was young she has a friend and she died because of abortion look at the lyrics pay attention

*She had her eye across the street

On someone shy and tall> she fell in love with a boy, and obviously the had sex

*In tears she told me she was late> her menstruation didnt come so she was pregnant

*She left one night with just a nod: she left with just a nod > she was going to make the abortion

*She never saw those birds again>> SALLY DIED

  • alright well you know there are churchs that help the mother and there is always adoption!!!!! You can't punish someone for your actions and you know what the baby is alive I don't care when they get the abortion but it's still a baby it's pretty much like murder!!!!!!!

  • Gotta say, first off this song is based off something that actually happend. Second off, think of how many lives were lost (And I'm talking about the person functioning and living on their own, not reliant off another human body) when abortion was illegal so they went to "doctors" who used knitting needles and the such? People will always see abortion as an option even if it is illegal, may as well make it possible to be done in a safe manner so 2 people don't die...

  • Ok well then that's how you feel. My parents raised me to believe abortion was wrong and i've known that my whole life. Obviously you don't appreciate life that much!!! Have a nice day and hope you enjoy killing babies

  • I have never killed a person nor animal in my life. But you have to understand, not everyone shares your view point. Some people see in certain situations that abortion is the only option, and when abortion was illegal, it lead to more innocent lives being ended. I do appreciate life. But you have to learn to look at it from the other side. What woman would want to carry the child of a rape for 9 months? I know thats not what is represented in the song, but you get the idea.

  • Ok then again that's how you feel about the situation and I respect that but I also respect the way I feel about it

  • what if you got raped and pregnant?? what would you do then? Or if having the baby was going to kill you? I think it depends on the circumstances.

  • If I did get raped I would still have the baby and then give it to my parents....besides even if I did get raped I couldn't get pregnant. Oh well I would give up my life anyday for my child.

  • dancedancer1234 :I'm afraid it's not as simple as that. Why should your parents take care of YOUR baby? How would you be able to look a that baby knowing that the only reason it's here is because of some sex addict taking advantage of you? And it's easy to say you'll die for your baby but when you're actually in that position, what would you say then?

  • they would rather take care of MY baby until i was out of college than kill MY baby. I would be able to look at it and think of he/she as a blessing even with the circumstances I would I know plenty of people who would give up their life for their child since you have had a pretty long life you should give that baby a chance to live.

  • That's fine that you would be strong enough to do those things, but I'm not.

  • Ya and that's fine because everyone is entitled to there own opinion.

  • This song really makes you think in the abortion debate. If abortion is illegal, that isn't gonna stop it, instead girls will choose for themselves, and possibly die. By making abortion illegal, it would just make more girls suffer.

  • from the cd "hat full of stars"

    i still play this record...

  • This song is beautiful. Abortions still took place when it was illegal. Crimes still take place whether they are legal or not. Is it a crime? Its sad either way.

  • So you're saying the innocent baby should be born into a family that never wanted it and possibly be unloved or even abandoned? Or maybe kept by a mother who wasn't prepared for it and can't provide a good quality of life, ruining the lives of the mother AND the baby? I'm not pro-abortion of course, but you have to take circumstances into consideration before you make comments like that.

  • I love you Cyndi... Good lyrics!!!

  • so wait,

    is she pro-life or pro-choice...

  • she's very active pro-choice. Her friend, Sally, died from a "back alley job" - meaning she had an illegal abortion before abortion was legal and died from it.

  • If woman lose the right to have a safe and legal abortion there will be many more Sallys again.

  • When Abortion was illegal, abortions still took place. The fact is, since Roe v Wade, there have been less abortions in the US... the reason: Doctors are careful to counsel women prior to the actual operation, giving them an idea of other options. Prior, if a woman felt there was no option, a "back alley" job was all they thought they could do. Make Abortion illegal. The next time a child is found dead in a trash can, you can say.. well at least it wasnt killed before it was born.

  • Beautiful song. Co-written by Mary Chapin Carpenter.

  • Cyndi L. Is the best star:) I love Cynd:*

  • Oooh! Been so long since I heard this. Thanks for posting...I love this song, got me through my own hard times and loss of innocence....long live Cindy!

  • i think i m about to cry.

  • nice song..I just heard..

    and I like it..!!

  • de frente a favoritos

  • i lov this songbut makes me upset because my best fiend died a few years ago and this song was her favourite and so was played at her funeral but i love to listen to it as it brings back hapy memories of her thanks for adding it

  • powerful!

  • i have loved this song for years and i really love the fact that the music video shows the story she's singing about

  • I had the honor of seeing Cyndi doing this song at a National Abortion Federation annualn meeting. NAF is a professional group for doctors and nurses working in abortion medicine. She talked about the message of the song and her reason for writing it. It is, indeed, about a young woman who died from a back alley, illegal abortion. The song is so simple but so damn powerful.

  • it recalls me to think of Eva, used to be her favorit...what a moment.

  • A poetic and beautiful song from a woman who really has great artistic depth and range. Really speaks to me.

  • Images of the childhood friends appear throughout the video, and one may be led to believe we are simply looking at images inside adult Cyndi's memory. But toward the end of the video, as adult Cyndi walks away from the camera and is in the far distance, an image of the children appears in the puddle near to the camera. Does this image suggest that the girls still exist, in their innocence, somewhere in space and time?

  • I think in the lyrics it's apparent that "Sally" was "lost"... perhaps the imagery at the end was a memory or a wish.

  • I was asking whether the video's end, given adult Cyndi's distance from the images in the puddle, was perhaps suggesting the eternity in spirit of the young innocents. As you say, the girl's body was "lost." Sally is the pigeons' owner Sal. The pigeons' flight may stand for the hope or dream of freedom, even in a world that cages our natural instincts-- "We had a fool's confidence that the world had no boundaries."

    Cyn directed vid., I think

  • Perhaps, more so the pigeon's flight signifies the flight of innocense.. forever lost, like Sally's pigeons.. and yes, I think somewhere, in memory or time/space somewhere all of us, lost - still exist.

...But innoncense, and common sense, they come in different quantities...

  • I believe Sally actually died in a "back alley" abortion.

  • Sally was the pigeons' owner. Cyn's friend died

as you say. From 3:12-3:17, however, images of the

innocent, wild friends appear in the puddle, as

adult Cyn's back is turned and she is about 70 yds

away. My question is this: does this image suggest

that the spirit of the young friends could not be

killed, and that they exist still? Is it a possible

    interpretation,remembering in poetry that unicorns

    and spirits can be real?

  • Two examples of souls living after death in song:

"John Brown's body lies a mouldering in the grave,

but his soul goes marching on."

From Joe Hill: "The copper bosses killed you Joe,

they killed you Joe, said I"

"Takes more than guns to kill a man, said Joe,"I

    didn't die." Said Joe "I didn't die."

These songs remain fighting songs of activists

decades after the actual death of the abolitionist

Brown and the strike leader Hill.

  • I love this song ... very cool to see a video to go with it. It's always nice to have a visual to go with the audio.

  • This song always wants to make me cry. Does sally really run away?

  • Sally is the guy who owns the pigeons. Her friend's name is never mentioned.

  • Merveilleuse mélodie

  • i love this song but cant download it or nothing!!! if anyone has it can they send it by email? let me know please!! xxx

  • GOF BLESS CYNDI LAUPER

  • Grown up loving Cyndi's music...will probably play a Laupersong at my funeral.

  • Bellissima canzone,

    veramente emozionante,

    Great Cindy Lauper.

  • FUN FACT: The blonde girl in the video is a young Julia Stiles.

  • this song DOES make me cry. i made an amv for it, because it's such a beautiful song.

  • She has a beautiful voice.

  • Thanks for posting this video. It makes me want to cry too!

The song is about 2 childhood pals who grow up together and 1 of them falls pregnant. The girl goes for a "back alley job" which actually refers to illegal abortions which were carried out at great risk and caused many deaths. Sadly in the song the girl was killed by this medical practise.

  • awe.. I love that song.. it kind of makes me want to cry..

  • I love sally's pigeons!

  • ugh...beautiful video/song. some critics who gave the whole album a low rating dismissed this song because they thought cyn was actually writing a song about a bird. STUPID. i'm sure radio stations thought the same thing. STUPID.

  • a beautiful song co wrote with mary chapin carpenter a real good country singer

  • COOL!!! Love this song :)<3333
