there were and will be many piano players and each impertinent things on hos or her way...they not GODS .but. there is only one "GOD" that his Music we carry with us anywhere and everywhere and wherever and whatever we do at all times and places.... and all others are clergy s ....
Comparing Gilels to Richter is a fool's errand, both are extraordinary.
But the fact is Gilels was a surreal musician and artist from when he was young until we lost him.
Gilels is the one disciple of Rachmaninoff in pianism, as Rach personally acknowledged that Gilels alone was worthy of being called his successor. Further, Rach gave the medal and diploma he was given as the chosen successor to Anton Rubinstein to Gilels, and added Gilels' name to the document. That means everything :-))
yes indeed ,I read on a site dedicated to Emil Gilels how he was bold ( till he succeeded ) to apply for Heinrich Neuhaus during WWII ( when every citizen of german ascendance was suspected to be a traitor , I believe) . Of course , Emil Gilels has never been timid as far as justice is concerned .
That's great. Richter's playing brings me myself, in any case, more feeling of pathetique. Is there any version of Maria Yudina? My teacher says it's a must-heard for Beethoven.
Sorry, but I am Richter lover. Richter was truly giant of piano. But, I think, Emil Gilels was also true giant. Gilels was second to noone! No, not even to Richter, or for that matter, Rachmaninoff or Horowitz, etc, etc. They all are number one. Piano history will be deprived of great play if we dispense with even one of them, piano history will be that much impoverished.
So, I think, we cann't say Richter was better or Gilels was better. Both were better. Thank you and sorry wrong English and naive opinion, but I think this is mature Gilels of later years and this is just superb, no? We can hear this playing from Gilels only. Nobody else. Thank you.
I agree, the musicians are so great that they cannot be compared between each other. It is only now you can say that the pianists had descended to the level of hang-hang or bang bang...whatever....
thank you for your profound comment. I totally agree. What sense does it make to say Rubinstein is better than so and so or Kogan is better than that violinist. none at all!
Thank you for the compliment. Come to think of it now, perhaps mine was just a gratuitous remark. But, I felt the urge to say it. Many (many many) people (especially in my country, which is Japan) seem to think Richter was number one and Gilels was in some way only number two. Too bad. Gilels had qualities that Richter did not.
lol, my feelings exactly after I heard him playing Rachmaninoff. I was in awe, & thinking "Jesus, how am I supposed to appraoch the piano & attempt playing that now?!"
I agree with you completely, & I find that that is the case most of the time. Gilels is very loyal to the style he's playing, & it' apparent he studies every piece beforehand. Richter, in my opinion, puts more emphasis on his technique & coordination skills.
impressive!!! I don't think i'm even half as good ><

Pour moi, Gilels est tout à fait parmi les meilleurs pour Beethoven

In France , too , Richter was supposed to be upon Gilels ; may be it was because of the man : Emil Gilels seemed to be humble , not a star .
Though both pianists were sovietics , they came not from same social origin.
In a way , that can explain what Gilels expresses when he is playing .
May be he had more understanding for social being and he turned that deep feeling into music .

Humble? yes, he was. But he was bold enough to apply for his repressed teacher.

I keep seeing these comments posted by people like "oh, this is ok, but it could be better"
F off. Unless you can play as well as Emil Gilels than STFU

I like your comment. I think its okay, but it could be better.
Like when you say F off. That part could be brought out a little more.

The style isn't really as good as it can be. But his sound is very good. Thank you~.

Hmm, his playing on his box set of Beethoven Sonatas is also wonderful!

En mi humilde opinion , nadie nunca ha interpretado esta sonata como Pollini lo hizo.

No, my friend,
it's his live performance from 1968. Recorded in Moscow, Great Hall.

I'm gonna strat playing this wonderful piece, and Gilel's version has some good parts.

Absolutely fantastic. This is, I think, my favorite rendition of one of the most marvellous pieces of music ever written.

Better than richter IMHO!
Gilels fallowed all dynamics accurately and sound.
Richter only showed his technique...

@lastnaturemistake Utterly ridiculous of you to deal with Richter with such a throwaway remark. Gilels and Richter were both gods.
