the "opening" on the white iPhone 4 is the proximity sensor / light intensity detector.. the phone dims / brightens the screen according to the user's lighting environment, and turns off the screen when you are putting the phone close to your ears for a conversation..

most importantly it is not exclusive for the white iPhone 4 just that the dark color blends in with the black frame on the black ones...

Moreover, this little thing existed since the original iphone... nothing new!
