The thrash metal stuff of the eighties was more because the guys were influenced by both stuff like Minor Threat and Iron Maiden, and the influences came into the music naturally. Also, metal has come into its own quite a bit since then. It's very much its own thing with no longer much obvious similarity between a lot of it and punk, especially genres like Melo-death
Just to add a little. There was some kind of scene out East with the Roxy and the band that got me started on punk...the Plasmatics. Minor Threat, I must agree is the most intense punk music around. No Joke. Awesome sound, raw energy and great messages. They were my favorite through the mid-80's and now, too.
