The USA does not target civilians of other countries. War is horrible and there will always be civilian casualties of war on both sides. That being said, the world trade center was not a military installation and it was chosen as a target specifically for this reason.

If a country takes over and occupies a city you live in and you are found aiding a solder of the opposing force. Many countries soldiers are instructed to kill the family of the household that aided the solder. This has always been the way it works.

But, NYC didn't have so much as one carrier near it. No active military in sight. Keep in mind that the world is watching anyone at war. "There was no war"? The enemy would disagree. They would cite (accurately) an ongoing campaign of political and military actions on the part of the United States going back decades. And attacks on your enemy's infrastructure are not uncommon in war. We routinely bomb civilian sites like power plants and refineries because of the tactical advantage of robbing your opponent of resources. Our own "rules" of war can justify virtually any violent act.

That's the craziest thing I've ever heard. The Japanese didn't have any steel left, and the Germans lost key oil fields in the Caucus. Towards the end of the war, Germany was sending out old men and youngsters to fight for them, while Japan was training civilians to use sharpened bamboo sticks against invaders.

Take one innocent man in Iraq, or Afghanistan, or Pakistan, and kill him with a bomb meant for a bad guy. Now take all of his friends and family and all of the strangers who hear about him, and watch the fear, hate, and resentment that create the next generation of terrorists grow inside them. Now multiply by tens of thousands.
Military action against terorrists needs to be limited, precise, surgical, and slanted toward preventing colloteral damage and civilian casualties. Police work and espionage are the most valuable tools for removing the terrorist threat, not cruise missiles and unmanned drones.
What you are talking about costs more money and time. We simply can't afford it and neither can they. No one can afford the resources to be that heart felt in a war. In the time we are sneaking around and being so sugical, they are hopping on planes and using them to blow up our buildings. If we blow them up, wala. No one making plans to kill us.
As for our foriegn policy. How about after we help someone, they get up off thier asses and help themselves. If that country would simply unite against it's oppressors as this one has, maybe they could take care of themselves instead of leeching off us. Maybe if their citizens would be willing to get off their asses and fight for their freedom they wouldn't have to die in the wake of us fighting for them

In Georgia, and many lower states, the civil war is known as the war of northern aggression. ( and that's printed in history books down there ) Also, their printed views of the start of the civil war is different than in all non-southern states. Actually, the 4th of July does not represent "the birth of democracy." If anything, it represents the birth of a separate, free country from imperial Britain. Later, after the revolution and the framing of the Constitution, the US was born as a "Republic." The framers, our founding fathers, were not fans of the concept of democracy. Franklin stated "Democracy is but two wolves and a sheep deciding what to have for dinner." In a democracy, the voice of the minority is always oppressed.

The USA does not target civilians of other countries. War is horrible and there will always be civilian casualties of war on both sides. That being said, the world trade center was not a military installation and it was chosen as a target specifically for this reason.

If a country takes over and occupies a city you live in and you are found aiding a solder of the opposing force. But, NYC didn't have so much as one carrier near it. No active military in sight. Keep in mind that the world is watching anyone at war. Multiple countries will either sanction or condemn any of these actions on either side.

Seems to me that the rationale for "militant zone" is pretty flimsy. New York City has a great many American serviceman, both active and retired, and is a vital lynchpin in our national infrastructure. By most conventional military thinking, its fair game. And these folks living in New York know that foriegn militants want to destroy their home. Should they not, by your logic, relocate, or else be all but inviting violent death on themselves? You've all but rationalized the attacks.

"There was no war"? The enemy would disagree. They would cite (accurately) an ongoing campaign of political and military actions on the part of the United States going back decades. And attacks on your enemy's infrastructure are not uncommon in war. We routinely bomb civilian sites like power plants and refineries because of the tactical advantage of robbing your opponent of resources. Our own "rules" of war can justify virtually any violent act.

1. We "helped" the Afghans for selfish reasons; we didn't give a damn about them, we just wanted to weaken and emberass the Soviets.
2. It was largely our foriegn policy failures that helped the extremist Taliban government take control of the country. Just ask Charlie Wilson.
3. The thousands of civilians we've killed didn't do a damn thing to us.

Without our help the Afghans would probably have been steamrolled by the Soviets. Back then Afghanistan wasn't even a "bird" to us back then, no one could even have dreamed that such a nation would be a threat to our national security. And it wouldn't have been if we hadn't left them in the lurch after the war. As for "nations helping themselves", there are revolutions in these countries all the time. And they often install the very same governments we later come and knock over. See: Iran.

But you assume that a populist uprising creates a government that's lovey-dovey with America and doesn't sponsor terrorism. But in fact the currently-hostile governments of lots of countries rose out of just such movements. Good foriegn policy gives the common people of foriegn nations reasons not to hate us, thus reducing the threat of terror no matter what government they have, but bombs dont' accomplish that. Besides, Afghanistan had an anti-Taliban movement, but a revolution takes time.

That's the craziest thing I've ever heard. The Japanese didn't have any steel left, and the Germans lost key oil fields in the Caucus. Towards the end of the war, Germany was sending out old men and youngsters to fight for them, while Japan was training civilians to use sharpened bamboo sticks against invaders.

Japan wanted to surrender about 7 months earlier, but did not want to give up the emperor under the "unconditional surrender" terms. All those deaths over one man. The worst part is the US pardoned him after the war. Still I believe the dropping of the two bombs was the right choice.

AND the U.S. was not in the war alone we had many many allied forces helping us. The U.S. has or had, a great military but we could never have won WWII alone. Wars are the least effective way to guard against terrorism. They're sloppy, expensive, ineffectual, and for every one genuine bad guy you kill, you create countless. Take one innocent man in Iraq, or Afghanistan, or Pakistan, and kill him with a bomb meant for a bad guy. Now take all of his friends and family and all of the strangers who hear about him, and watch the fear, hate, and resentment that create the next generation of terrorists grow inside them. Military action against terorrists needs to be limited, precise, surgical, and slanted toward preventing colloteral damage and civilian casualties. Police work and espionage are the most valuable tools for removing the terrorist threat, not cruise missiles and unmanned drones.
