Detroit has needed this speech for a long time. I have a hard time feeling sorry for (corporate) Detroit. Since the 19700s, they've resisted change, building larger and gas hungry vehicles, while foreign auto makers saw the writing on the wall and started working on fuel-efficient vehicles.
