Love this song. The theme is so mellow and melancholic.. To me it just evokes a beautiful ,mysterious girl. i guess the instrumental bit was the band trying to be a bit experimental. Most rock bands in those days saw themselves as 'progressive' and expanding rock away from pop, not sure if it really worked. Most of the fans didn't mind a quiet 9 mins instrumental cos they would have been st@ned at the time anyway:)
9:04 is just freaking awesome. does anyone know if they ever branched off of that and put in into a full song or was it just for kicks? i need more damn it!
there's no need to defend your music. only you are the observer of your experiences of sound. you know whats right in your mind. keep it there and shut the fuck up haha that is all
This (for some reason) reminds me of the same indescribably, painful, bleak, creepy head-space I was left in toward the tail-end of being raped as a child. Like I'm dead. But I wasn't dead. It took a while for my brain to catch up with that. Sure as fuck felt like I was being murdered- STABBED to death- torn in two. Horrible, evil, overwhelming pleasure that was pleasure indeed, but was infinitely, eternally painful, and I couldn't fight it. That's the most disgusting part. This reminds me.
I used to freak when something would pull me back into this headspace, and fight it, and avoid it. I became OCD, I guess, because it's like I was fighting the evil desires in me, running away from them. Suicide became an escape from the pain of OCD. OCD is about fear of death. Right about the time I started to become suicidal, I let what I feared overtake me, and started FANTASIZING about being raped/murdered. At least the fear would finally end. So, I guess I'm self-harming with this song.
I've read a lot of the comments that wax philosophically about this group and enjoyed them. KIng Crimson, which I do like, is still a really weird group to me. And I still don't like that album cover.
You guys crack me up. Can you not just listen to a song a take it all in for what it is worth? Must there be some intellectual conversation from everyone as if they were music critics,or like you were all academics? It's a really kewl song.... leave it at that and be very happy that there are those out there that like to put music out for it's artistic sake instead of trying to make a fast buck!
@MapleStreetFilms There is one Foreigner song that sounds somewhat similar to King Crimson's "RED", that song is "At War With The World" off their s/t debut.
I don't understand why so many people dislike the improv section of this song, I actually love it, I remember the first time I've heard the full length version of this song I was riding my bike close to the Columbia River and this song was on my IPod and the improv section totally blew me away
Historical song. The aching beauty of the opening part is overshadowes by the avant-gardist following instrumental. The sounds are scattered and everchanging, which puts the listener into submission by making them bewildered. Try to memorise the sounds you hear. Fat chance. The cohesiveness also comes from how the thing unfolds and also having something, so quiet, yet bubbling with hidden fury. It's calm, but try calling it mellow! Moonchild fits the album's fury whilst giving it variety.
Okay, perhaps the extra 9 odd minutes after the introduction are meant to be deeply spiritual and expressive, but I honestly don't see anything worthwhile in them; to me they just droned on a bit too long after what started as another great track.
@Possesssed666 Learn to have some patience and take it for what it's worth. Try to see what they are trying to convey in their choice. It was obviously intentional, therefore there is a meaning behind it.
@eskobar979 Lol trust me if there is one virtue I possess it is patience, the patience to evaluate progressive rock songs that clock in at 20 to 30 minutes plus as well as classical compositions lasting over an hours length. The majority of this song still does nothing for me and it would be mature of you to respect that opinion.
I have never quite felt a more celestial feeling listening to this song during the few years I have spent on this earth. Makes you want to know more about whats out there in front of your door other than what you see. Magical. :) Pure Art
@jabforallmankind Because beauty and art is based almost solely on opinions. People have, sometimes, completely different ones. Thus, one person feels compelled to say something "negative" where they shouldn't. Another person's opinion is probably very strong for this music, so they feel as if they should correct them, or maybe even defend the music, or their own thoughts. Music is a very reasonable thing to argue about, but it is very annoying and unnecessary.
@jumpinjoe88 "Above all I have learned from the Jesuits. And so did Lenin too, as far as I recall. The world has never known anything quite so splendid as the hierarchical structure of the [Roman] Catholic Church. There were quite a few things I simply appropriated from the Jesuits for the use of the [Nazi] Party.
@jumpinjoe88 "In the agreement to rescue Rome [i.e., the Roman Catholic Church's hierarchy] from the predicament of losing its world control to Protestantism, and to preserve the spiritual and temporal supremacy which the popes [had] 'usurped' during the Middle Ages, Rome now 'sold' the [Roman Catholic] Church to the Society of Jesus [i.e., the Jesuits]; in essence the popes surrendered themselves into their hands."
@jumpinjoe88 Alexandre Dumas pere wrote over 400 historical novels exposing world tyranny(Roman Catholic Empire). He was born near Paris in 1802 and 'coincidentally' in 1902 the Society of Gesu(Jesuits) were expelled from France for the 3rd and last time. The Society of Jesu(Jesuits) have been expelled from 83 countries, city states and cities and their pope is ARAMIS AND HE IS ALSO KNOWN AS THE COUNT OF MONTE CHRISTO(GENERAL OF THE JESUITS).
@jabforallmankind Michael Tsarion is the worlds premier conspiracy researcher/lecturer/author. Leo Zagami, Jordan Maxwell and Alexandre Dumas pere are highly informative as well. p.s. Melting Euphoria is similar to Ozric Tentacles and Gong.
LiteracyLabyrinth2 has a point. The song really does lose its meaning after the singer's entry. I really don't see why it had to be twelve minutes long with 90% that's just non-melodic.
@Poisonnachos Yeah but sometimes just looking at that horrid red face, it's just disturbing. It's a good album cover but frightening. I mean I remember I was on iTunes browsing through albums and this one came up unexpectedly when I was scrolling through the covers on album cover flow mode. It just stopped randomly on this one when I let go of the mouse. I nearlly screamed in terror =P
@ToxicTurquoise454 Plus, I hate my generation. My entire grade listens to crap music. No one will find out the true joy of King Crimson and Emerson, lake & palmer :(

there is no description for the style. if you look up the beginnings of King Crimson they required all of there members to play completely unique to what they had been taught previously.
I have to admit I lose interest at about 6:00 minutes - the edited version on the boxset is way better. But here is is in all its glory for us to ponder over. Filler material for my ears though.

But then this crazy section starts. And I just don't like it somehow. I mean it isn't difficult to play and it doesn't sound good in my opinion. Can somebody explain me what is good there and worthy to hear??
Please don't get me wrong. As I explained I really love this band but this part just doesn't make sense to me somehow ;)
@RPBassIllusion If you're not used to hearing ambient or minimalist instrumental sections in prog rock, then this might sound a little odd. But I've always enjoyed the chaotic and dissonant latter half of the song because it's essentially a polar opposite of the beautiful and poetically structured beginning part. King Crimson was most likely trying to achieve an effect by contrasting these parts and I think they were successful in doing so.
@RPBassIllusion I agree. The problem is the track experiments with variations of sound and it is rather dull after the first listen or so. Of course Crimson were simply playing music out of the box but it does not mean we have to like this. We can admire their bold approach and I guess the album stands alone as a legendary prog classic due to these type of innovative approaches. Soft Machine were another band that I could never get into for the same reasons.
pretty awesome stuff. i'm 33. my parents had a tape of the crimson king album, amongst bowie, springsteen, beach boys and others. we used to holiday by car, driving across france , listening to these tapes. I will never forget the impression this album made on me, 3 tracks in particular, 21st C, In the court & this one.
I like the HD. This is one of my favorite pieces of music of all time, a lot of people dislike the improv but I find it beautiful, especially toward the end. :)
@ProcolHarum1967 Ah yes, we criticise because we admire the band. It is no more than that. Opinions are valid and that is my opinion, you are entitled to yours, as I am. You do not have to agree with it, but you can understand we all have different ways of listening to music, with different tastes..
@LiteracyLabyrinth2 I don't know why ur comment was eliminated but it should've sucked. If you can't recognize what music is really about, then don't come here
@alvifegan It is my opinion. Just like yours it has validity as an opinion and that's all. We are entitled to one so I wish people would just remember that. I love King Crimson but not everything they do is gold, even they would admit that. 21st Century Schizoid Man is a masterpiece as is all the material on ITCOTCK. I also think they have brilliant tracks on Larks Tongues in Aspic, Starless and Bible Black, and of course Red, the other masterpiece. Wonderful band and ingenius virtuoso Fripp.
@wozza1066 I'm ten years old, and I feel bad i found out about king crimson from guitar hero. Now, I only know about ten or fifteen of their songs, but theyre still awesome.
...marvelous!

@LiteracyLabyrinth2 It's neither awful nor is it called art rock. No one is making you listen.
