He's not dissing Joseph Campbell, but those people who write about it as the end-all, do-all for writers. What they're missing is describing the process, which is what he's teaching.

He bashes Campbell and then just says in a "simpler" way the exact same things that Campbell pointed out, even using other stories to give examples, the same thing Campbell did! And by the way, Campbell never said the Hero's Journey had to be rigidly followed or that it was all that was needed to tell a good story. That was never his goal.

If Campbell seems a little imposing, I would suggest Christopher Vogler's "The Writer's Journey".
