2 Cars were driving past when David was running to lend assistance. So they would have known that somebody was trapped in the inferno. If they had of stopped, jumped out & lent assistance also then maybe Roger would have survived? David Purley had more balls then the Marshalls & other drivers combined. Roger would have looked down & said "You were there for me giving your all" Ill save ya a beer when ya visit which he did, David passed away in 1985.
A lot of people who saw the incident thought that actually David Purley was the driver of the crashed car so they did not realized that the real driver was still in the car...painful mistake

they did what they could do nothing the driver had all the gear on, if you have ever stood near a fire with that much heat just being within a few feet can peel your skin, racing safety has come leaps and bounds, but will always be a risk,,,,! those guys are not to blame it was a large fire, david receved a medal for his bravery. trying to save the driver... lesson learnt.

To some comments here, i wouldn't say "stupid marshals", etc.. I think it was more the problem in this years, becouse the only man there, who was wearing a fire/heat protective suit was David, so the marshals realy couldn't do much more. This burning gas is realy wery hot...

Hi inthaclouds. Purley did not have a broken leg here. The incident you are talking about when he decelerated from 173 km/h (108 mph) to 0 in a distance of 66 cm was 4 years after this at Silverstone.
Why didn´t they stopped? They could have helped him. Fire protected clothing, not like these stupid marshalls. They continue driving like hell. Blame them forever. Incredible David Purley

By my own admission I am a hard nosed bitch, but this is the one clip that reduces me to an absolute mess. To see the helplessness, frustration and ultimately loss of life is just horrific. I live on the Isle Of Man and am very used to racing (albeit motorbikes) and have marshaled races - how different it is now.
It really could have been avoided and that is what creases me up the worst.
Quicker action with fire extinguishers might have meant the difference between life and death. It certainly wasn't going to be possible to put the fire out with one, but it might have smothered the worst of the flames long enough for the other marshalls to assist David Purley in righting Williamson's car. But who knows? If, if, if....If life were fair, we would still have this forever young promising racer and the hero who tried to save him.
He didn't die because of the fire, he didn't have any air. He called for David and begged for him to help him out. It took several minutes before he died... Sad.

Okay, I've been ready alot of opinions about this incident, I can you that there should have been manslaugher chargers against the orginazers of this event and Formula One. They should have helped Roger from the moment he crashed and his car came to rest. I hope the Williamson family filed are wrongful death against the organizers of the Dutch Grand Prix and F1 because had this had happen in 2009 there would have been a world outrage!

How is it the marshall's fault? Williamson 'lost control' of his car. He knew the dangers of Formula One and paid the price. sad but true. Ultimately his actions killed him.

As Jackie Stewart has said many times, he thought it was David Purley's car and that he had got out of it, F1 cars travel that fast that they didn't realize that anyone was trapped inside it,they just saw David running around and thought he was OK! they had no 2 way radio's in those days. I'm sure many of the drivers from that day have asked themselves many questions since, such as "why didn't I stop to find out?" Life is full of "What if's".
It's shocking to think people like Jackie Stewart just drove past, some of the drivers not even changing line or slowing down, just driving flat out through the smoke while Roger was dying at the side of the racetrack!
Such a powerful tribute. Where purley is battling to try and push the car the right way up with no help nearly makes my shed a tear, so sad knowing that the poor driver burned alive.
One can clearly see David Purley going first backwards after jumping out of his car.
In the confusion and the emergency, he thought for a second that Williamson's March had stopped well before the turn. He then quickly realised that what he took for the car were in fact only burning detached pieces. That'a why he had to run several meters to reach the actual upturned car.

I think your bang on, its just annoying knowing all the technology and money in F1 and there was'nt fire and accident services strategically placed, i know with motor racing risks are involved and they know that but what a way to go, its just a real waste of life that need'nt have happened thanks for your comment

How is it the marshall's fault? Williamson 'lost control' of his car. He knew the dangers of Formula One and paid the price. sad but true. Ultimately his actions killed him.

Wasn't Rogers actions mate. He suffered a tyre deflation while negotiating a corner. Thats why he crashed.

david purley was the only one who offered his help, but then again the drivers thought Purley was the driver of that burning car and that no one was actually trapped inside. Still, he deserves a lot for trying to save the life of a fellow friend.

No one mention in comments the one of the possible reason of Purley he served in SAS commando, where self-sacrifice for mates or someone else is natural reaction, that is an elite force... Humour of the destiny he have to die in an another dangerous sport, stuntplane-racing few years later. Nobody can help for him that moment. That was the heroic-age of Formula One and never come back, like 60's of America...

i can imagine what sorrow david had after the death of roger.. roger's last words propably were "david, get me out from here".. and you can see how he almost falls on the ground after they haved pulled him away from roger..

As Jackie Stewart has said many times, he thought it was David Purley's car and that he had got out of it, F1 cars travel that fast that they didn't realize that anyone was trapped inside it,they just saw David running around and thought he was OK! they had no 2 way radio's in those days. I'm sure many of the drivers from that day have asked themselves many questions since, such as "why didn't I stop to find out?" Life is full of "What if's".

when David is running towards Rogers car many other drivers are passing by...
this video is a pretty short version.. David even tries to stop cars afterwards but noone did that.
David is the real hero, for sure!

It's shocking to think people like Jackie Stewart just drove past, some of the drivers not even changing line or slowing down, just driving flat out through the smoke while Roger was dying at the side of the racetrack!

Such a powerful tribute. Where purley is battling to try and push the car the right way up with no help nearly makes my shed a tear, so sad knowing that the poor driver burned alive.

One can clearly see David Purley going first backwards after jumping out of his car.
In the confusion and the emergency, he thought for a second that Williamson's March had stopped well before the turn. He then quickly realised that what he took for the car were in fact only burning detached pieces. That'a why he had to run several meters to reach the actual upturned car.

Really sad - let them (together with Purley) rest in piece. Maybe they have found the better world...
ps. Roger had blow up of the tyre or suspension problems - that probably caused accident, not just loosing the control.
