J Dilla the Don of Hip Hop as far as I'm concerned! I love the productions Premier, Havoc & those other Hip Hop Greats made but you can't touch Dilla. You hear the shit today and is no where near the talent Mr Yancey had. I've got the instrumental album and play it constantly. If they played more stuff like this in the UK, I'd go raving but sod it. I'll take instrumentals like this and start a lil mixtape to show rappers who don't keep their roots up. No balance in the music scene.
Since no one else is, I'll be the first to talk shit.
Illa J is too inexperienced too have rapped over these beats, the guy who gave him the beat tape should have gave them to someone with more years on their plate like Black Thought, Common, S.V., Busta, or someone else that was around for the golden era. You should buy this, but stick to the instrumentals, Dilla can do no wrong . . but Illa . . can do wrong and he did on this album.
My favorite song from the album, as well as "Sounds Like Love". I knew this album would be hot, but I never thought it would be as good as it turned out to be. Real Hip Hop!
illa j kinda strike me as a more main stream dilla, not in the bad way, mor ein the way that I could see him getting broader recognition. J dilla was fairly below the radar as far as a the majority of the hip hop community was concerned. I could see this on vh1 or BET or some such.
I wouldn't say BET. They like to block most good rap / hip hop music out there. "DO THE BIRD WALK" <-- Blahh... Anyway i love this song.. Puts me in that night-life mood.
illa j, keep doin what u do man....u r keepin hip hop alive w/ what u bring to the table..too many rappers afraid to be themselves nowadays...glad to see u arent one of them...illa j and j dilla forever ya diG!!?!?!?
