Well that's kind of a dumb implication, just because you have an identical clone doesn't mean you have to have sex with it. So I couldn't answer your question regardless, seeing as how I'm not into screwing family members.
Both Nia and Penn are wrong. They are taking too purist of positions. There is such thing as finding middle ground. I love Penn but like Nia he's being too extreme at times. Just cuz u let ppl get flu shots doesn't mean we should allow every single scientific possibility like cloning
if the process was perfect, perfect enough that the variation from the source was less than the normal mutation rate in a developing human (around 100 base pairs before birth more after),then why not clone?
why can't someone raise a clone of themselves? maybe a clone of their partner too. maybe a clone of the recombination of both of their genomes (for same sex couples) i dont see the harm myself.
@tuseroni i'm not necessarily against cloning in every case, but i'm just saying it's not a good thing IMO to have an all or nothing attitude. life is not black & white. even our free speech isn't absolute. u can't say that b/c we allow flu shots mean we should every scientific possibility...and this coming froma guy who loves most of penn's views lol
@SonicYouth5469 all or nothing doesnt enter into it, that's a red herring, the question is on freedom, if there is no harm there is no reason to disallow it just because you personally dont like it. you threw out "like cloning" as though it was accepted by everyone that cloning is wrong or bad, i asked you to justify that claim and you could not, you used weasel words like "in every case" to cover for the fact that you can't think of a specific case where abolition is justified.
@SonicYouth5469 Free speech is absolute or it isn't free. Freedom is absolute. Freedom Violations are why the government is there in the first place. Even hate speech as long as you're not hurting anybody is part of free speech. People that believe we should ban that are scared. They are saying that if we allowed people to say it large portions of the population would adopt racist ideas. How gullible and stupid do they think the majority of America is? The best way to end that is do nothing.
I don't know how Penn dealt with these morons, once you go atheist it's a natural reaction to not take these religious views seriously. It's like somebody arguing Earth is flat by saying "I believe!!!", it's a joke. Nia Long might as well have worn a clown nose making balloon animals. SMH, if you're religious then be religious but PLEASE understand it's just beliefs. You can't argue science with beliefs, leaving problems to get fixed by your imaginary friends is just fucking stupid.
I think her point is something like, "That's gross and wrong, someone stop him."
Thomas Sowell wrote a great article about people finding something "gross" and thinking that is sufficient reason to prevent free people from choosing for themselves. The ban on selling organs is an example of that.
What most of them should argue is that it's a fraud, but that would force them to answer the obvious question: do model eggs produce prettier kids on average? My guess is they do.
@ajdavidson11292 That's what makes Penn awesome. He really thinks about these issues in depth. On the rare occasion I don't agree with his ideas, he always has a reason that I respect.
i was like shit the host is stupid and i saw it was bill maher. and i was like oh i just realised it makes complete sence and ofc he will go on penn about hem being large and big
She is so miserable that she wants young people not to be happy. Well doesnt the constitution guarante you the right to pursue happynes how you like ? Doesnt that include getting married ?
@TheBoneheader No one is taking away their rights (for now), but Nia's position is that people under 26 shouldn't have the right to marry just because people who marry young get divorced a lot. And when challenged, her only defense was that people who have successful, early marriages are a minority, and therefore their rights don't count.
.....that moron can't even express a simple coherent thought, what the fuck did she even say? Stick to smiling pretty and flaunting your wares woman, this "debate" stuff may be a bit beyond you. In fact, the others aren't too much better, even Penn is a bit off in this segment. can you blame him? these retards are all over the place, like they drank to much energy drink backstage......what the fuck?
@LeftoverJedi The god of the desert is a cruel, mass-murdering, sexist, homophobic, immature, insecure, psychotic, maniac. With an attitude problem. At least the flying spaghetti monster has never been know to wish anyone ill-will.
The fact that these people weren't concerned about the intelligence level (IQ) of the models is more disturbing than the whole egg purchasing deal. Also, how homely do you need to be to pay a model for eggs? I haven't watched this entire episode so I might have missed something
Penn Jillette is consistent. Bill Maher on the other hand was a libertarian in the 90s because it was cool, then he became a progressive because that's the new cool. Be who you are, not what you think others want you to be.
@surfer53 I think that Maher feels like he was center-right in the 90s, and that the Democrats have nowadays moved into that position on the political spectrum. Also, I think it's more that he's against the far right than being for the left. It's kind of a subtle difference but it might explain it. Personally, I think Bush2 really galvanized him away from straight Libertarianism... just an opinion
Wow, that chick was smart at first. WTF happened? She sounded reasonable and sane on the donor egg issue but then, no marriage until 26? BY LAW? HOOGALY MOOGALY MOOGALY!!
@th3gr8juan Yeah, I have grown so tired of him constantly misrepresenting libertarianism. The only reason Bill Maher calls himself a libertarian is because he wants drugs to be legalized.
@IggyIrons I'm inclined to disagree with you since the views he express are incongruent with the ideas of the ideology he publicly claims to subscribe to, wether he's a social-libertarian as Noam Chomsky or libertarian in the same sense as Milton Friedman or Penn Jillette. He have a tendency to express paradoxical views, in some cases endorsing governmental coercion but when discussing the same principles, in a different context, he's rejecting the same principles and ideas he claims to live by.
about the law of marriage, back in the day, when families stayed together, they were married YOUNG....why did it work for them and not ppl now, nothing to do with age, but values and beliefs, and community involvement. Dating is so different now then it was back then...so no age isn't the issue, ideologies are...and motives are
Fucking Christ, every single guest is fucking retarded, except Penn. Even Maher is stupid, he claims to be a libertarian, yet he seems to be against allowing people to buy eggs.
Personally, I think it's shallow to "build" your perfect looking child, but I'm not going to ban people from doing that. Why should I, or the government, be included in their personal lives. THIS is the real libertarian position.
I'm with Penn why does everyone feel the need to correct other people choices with laws. Yes I would never purchase eggs from models, yes it's shallow, yes I think it's best that people to wait for marriage. How is it my business how others choose their lives. Isn't that what this whole US experiment is about, individual freedoms? Do we really want a society that protects us from ourselves.
I don't get what's so hard to conceive about enforcing a law that would require you be at least 26 to get married. We already have an age requirement on marriage, how would this be different? (Not that I agree with the idea, I just don't understand why it's so befuddling.)
@conyo985 I'm not saying it's a good idea or that I agree with it. I just don't understand why everyone in the video acted like it would be impossible to enforce that. It's already a legal requirement to be 18 to get married (with some exceptions), why would it be so hard to change the age?
with the exception of Penn. these are the kind of people who feel they know, what best for everyone else, bases on their own experiences. im getting really "intolerant" of this elitist attitude!!
"Of course it's stupid, and I wouldn't do it. But I don't want to stop other people from doing it."
Penn is the closest thing I've seen to a 100% genuine person. He doesn't let the ideals of others compromise his own, and doesn't let his ideals compromise others. He just believes in letting people be and do what they want.
If the measure of a true American is the belief that we should all be 100% free, with no restrictions, then Penn is the only true American among four impostors.
"We don't want a society where we control everything", yet she wants to control how people make their choices. So what if it's a stupid idea to buy eggs, with the hope of getting a model baby, it is STILL the peoples own choice if they want to buy these eggs. She has no right to tell people not to buy them, because she wouldn't do it herself. She's a selfrightious prejudice hypocrite fuck... Hats off to Penn, for being able to go through this without punching those religious morons in the face.
Not everyone believes in the same "higher power", so you cant just let things happen just because you think that theres some supernatural being in control. It slows down society, its basically saying "Well we cant solve all our problems so fuck it, let god(or allah or zues or odon or thor etc, fill in the blank) do his will. Religious people really dont think things through before they decide to say them.
If a technology exists then you can bet that a small minority of people, the richest, will have access to it regardless of legality. Why is a better start for our children opposed at all?
Penn's full of shit. Helping people? If we want to help women who can't naturally have children, encourage them to adopt. That way, we're helping two people. I started humming when Nia started blabbing about some sort of god.
@ProbableFiction He is for "choice"! People need to have a choice to chose whether they want to have their own baby or adopt. You are in no place to chose if others need to adopt or not!
@ProbableFiction "Penn's full of shit. Helping people?" I hardly see how we are agreeing on that sentence! Penn is actually the most libertarian out of them all who knows what he is talking about and has enough knowledge to back himself up.
You are 32, do you have any children or are you going to have any children someday?
@ShahnamPersia Providing a service that allows women to have children is fine within itself (we've been playing "god" since we figured out agriculture) but doing so by appealing to the ideal of beauty of supermodels is cheap. I work with underprivileged kids, real people that need loving parents, and someone is hitching his rope to the lowest common denominator, providing "beautiful children." I stand firmly by my stance that infertile women be encouraged to adopt. My wife miscarried in January.
@ProbableFiction Yes, I agree it is cheap, but people need the choice and if someone is dumb enough to pay for it -just because one is an ex-model- let them do it.
But why just encourage "infertile women"? Why not every family? One step is for government to pay extra to those families who adopt -providing they spend the money on the kid and his/her education- and the other step is to give "parenting license" to make sure not EVERYBODY is allowed to have kids. But is the later really practical?
@ProbableFiction I sympathized with you and your loss, I lost my step brother due to miscarriage -of course I can't truly feel your pain as he was not my son-, but I can relate to you in some ways.
@ProbableFiction The debate wasn't about adopting, so to criticize a person who haven't expressed their opinion about that subject, isn't really fair. But adopting isn't an argument for, why we shouldn't allow or explore the science of artificial insemination. And the other way around of course.
God gave people freewill for a reason. He is not a maid for you to call whenever you're too damn lazy to take responsibility for your actions. For example, when having kids you need to make sure you're ready financially, emotionally, and whatever else is necessary. Having sex while your wife is ovulating without first preparing for a child is not "letting God decide", it's pure laziness and irresponsibility. It seems that "let God decide" is merely used as an excuse to people to be lazy.
@Sicnalbtif People are getting dumber by the years and it doesn't surprise me actually....Stuff like Twitter, Facebook, iPhones, Jersey Shore, Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga is taking to much space in peoples lifes...It's a shame.
wow, no female-dog, those words came out YOUR mouth, penn didnt say shit haha... that woman is HORRIBLE, i thought that was just her act in movies like friday, turns out shes as fruity in real life as she leads on... ignorant self-defining christians, who needs em?
I don't know how I feel about this debate. I mean, right now, designer babies is a voluntary idea. But what about the future? Would that become compulsory? I mean, where do we draw the line?
I really hate how people simply ignore Penn Jilettte as a valid participant in a serious debate, just because of his job as an illusionist/ entertainer/ comedian. There's way too many instances of Penn being attacked about his lifestyle, than his views in this debate.
i just wish the nia would have just listened to penn at least a little bit instead of trying to run over him and not letting him get his point across.
What blows me away is Nia Long's comment, "You always trying to start some mess!" What? Just because he provided a counterpoint? Typical uninformed response -- you don't like the other person's argument, so you accuse them of being a rabble rouser
OMG poor Nia Long... She's just some actress on a circuit pushing some movie... Totally not ready to argue about anything, let alone a topic that would have required her doing some basic research, or at least having a mild comprehension of the implications of her own chosen argument. Penn, Bill, and that other lady-- whose name I missed-- totally destroy Nia's feeble argument.
@AJToad If I am not ready for an argument, I will not debate and that is what's expected from everyone else! She could say "in my opinion" and state the fact that she has no clue over the issue. After all, there were 3 other people excluding Bill to carry on a debate without her!
Why the flying fuck does it matter if a guy is consenting to selling consenting women's eggs to consenting women who can't really have kids on their own?
Nia Long has contradicted herself through this entire conversation. She is so frustrating!
Penn Jillette is so awesomely intelligent. I love how fierce and fearless he is. Also, Nia Long just lost my respect and shouldn't have commented on Penn's red nailpolish which is a tribute to his passed away mother. People love to comment on things that they know nothing about!

@th3gr8juan Yeah, I have grown so tired of him constantly misrepresenting libertarianism. The only reason Bill Maher calls himself a libertarian is because he wants drugs to be legalized.
DampNicklas 9 months ago
@DampNicklas He's a social libertarian, in my opinion he's been quite clear on this point.
IggyIrons 9 months ago

THIS is the real libertarian position.

albinoman13bt 1 year ago
I'm with Penn why does everyone feel the need to correct other people choices with laws. Yes I would never purchase eggs from models, yes it's shallow, yes I think it's best that people to wait for marriage. How is it my business how others choose their lives. Isn't that what this whole US experiment is about, individual freedoms? Do we really want a society that protects us from ourselves.
crazykeyman 1 year ago
I don't get what's so hard to conceive about enforcing a law that would require you be at least 26 to get married. We already have an age requirement on marriage, how would this be different? (Not that I agree with the idea, I just don't understand why it's so befuddling.)
doombuggy123 1 year ago
@doombuggy123
Well even if you require that kind of law then that already tramples on freedom. Think for a moment what's wrong marrying under the age of 26?
conyo985 1 year ago
@conyo985 I'm not saying it's a good idea or that I agree with it. I just don't understand why everyone in the video acted like it would be impossible to enforce that. It's already a legal requirement to be 18 to get married (with some exceptions), why would it be so hard to change the age?
doombuggy123 1 year ago

Sawkawraw 1 year ago 3
Not everyone believes in the same "higher power", so you cant just let things happen just because you think that theres some supernatural being in control. It slows down society, its basically saying "Well we cant solve all our problems so fuck it, let god(or allah or zues or odon or thor etc, fill in the blank) do his will. Religious people really dont think things through before they decide to say them.

Penn's full of shit. Helping people? If we want to help women who can't naturally have children, encourage them to adopt. That way, we're helping two people. I started humming when Nia started blabbing about some sort of god.
ProbableFiction 1 year ago
@ProbableFiction He is for "choice"! People need to have a choice to chose whether they want to have their own baby or adopt. You are in no place to chose if others need to adopt or not!
ShahnamPersia 1 year ago
@ShahnamPersia Agreed, which is likely why I said encourage women to adopt, not force them.
ProbableFiction 1 year ago
@ProbableFiction "Penn's full of shit. Helping people?" I hardly see how we are agreeing on that sentence! Penn is actually the most libertarian out of them all who knows what he is talking about and has enough knowledge to back himself up.
You are 32, do you have any children or are you going to have any children someday?
ShahnamPersia 1 year ago
@ShahnamPersia Providing a service that allows women to have children is fine within itself (we've been playing "god" since we figured out agriculture) but doing so by appealing to the ideal of beauty of supermodels is cheap. I work with underprivileged kids, real people that need loving parents, and someone is hitching his rope to the lowest common denominator, providing "beautiful children." I stand firmly by my stance that infertile women be encouraged to adopt. My wife miscarried in January.
ProbableFiction 1 year ago
@ProbableFiction Yes, I agree it is cheap, but people need the choice and if someone is dumb enough to pay for it -just because one is an ex-model- let them do it.
But why just encourage "infertile women"? Why not every family? One step is for government to pay extra to those families who adopt -providing they spend the money on the kid and his/her education- and the other step is to give "parenting license" to make sure not EVERYBODY is allowed to have kids. But is the later really practical?
ShahnamPersia 1 year ago
@ProbableFiction I sympathized with you and your loss, I lost my step brother due to miscarriage -of course I can't truly feel your pain as he was not my son-, but I can relate to you in some ways.
ShahnamPersia 1 year ago
@ProbableFiction SO WHY DONT YOU ADOPT YA HYPOCRITE PRICK
aaqilian 1 year ago
@ProbableFiction The debate wasn't about adopting, so to criticize a person who haven't expressed their opinion about that subject, isn't really fair. But adopting isn't an argument for, why we shouldn't allow or explore the science of artificial insemination. And the other way around of course.
simonwedege 1 year ago
God gave people freewill for a reason. He is not a maid for you to call whenever you're too damn lazy to take responsibility for your actions. For example, when having kids you need to make sure you're ready financially, emotionally, and whatever else is necessary. Having sex while your wife is ovulating without first preparing for a child is not "letting God decide", it's pure laziness and irresponsibility. It seems that "let God decide" is merely used as an excuse to people to be lazy.
