@Catherineone I just watched your clip, very interesting! Yes, looks like you got it spot on. I'll also check out your other clips of 1960s London clubs. I've been meaning to drop by where Tiles used to be but haven't done so yet. Wonder what that place is used for now? Thanks for sharing, it's fascinating to see then and now.
I'm reposting this comment by themummysbracelet, as I accidently deleted it. V. Sorry
'I went past it on the bus last night and 79 seems to be a Pizza Hut now. There is a club a few steps along from that that I've been to over the years with a similar basement layout, maybe it all used to be part of the same building back in the 60s. It would be nice if it was the same venue still hosting musical events, even if it's in a slightly altered state! It's more or less opposite the 100 Club'.
Does anyone know what or where this venue was, exactly? Or maybe went to that gig, or another one at that place? I'm assuming it's somewhere around Oxford Street W1 from the clip, but would love to know more as I'm around that area a lot. Thanks! x
I was trying to work out what building or shop it might have been near, but I can't see enough detail in the clip and am too young to remember from real life. I love old newsreel footage when gems like this pop up though, thanks for posting it!!
themummysbracelet, lol, you got me curious too, so I googled Tiles Club and found a few references which confirm it as a basement club at 79 Oxford Street. Many famous 60s bands played there, it was a great London gig venue. Probably long gone now..
themummysbracelet, thanks 4 the info. I read Tiles Club actually spanned 79-89 Oxford Strreet, I wonder if the club entrance was where Pizza Hut is now. I'll also take a look next time I'm in that area. Thanks for starting such an interesting thread! x
Hi Magus, not sure, Pizza Hut is on a corner & in the clip the club's not... maybe nearer to no.89? Makes you wonder what other interesting news clips are buried in film & tv archives, just waiting to be unearthed.
Thanks for all your videos btw, they've definitely kept me sane during stressful college & work deadlines in the last few months! There's nothing like a music break to lift the spirits, especially when it's Eric & the Animals! ps feel free to abbreviate my username if you like! x
TM'sB, oh right, the entrance had got to be a little further up then, :) but I'd love to know where exactly, wonder if that club you mentioned is the same place where Tiles used to be? Do those stairs still exist and what became of those underground shops? I tried to find old exterior photos of Tiles but failed. If anyone can provide fruther info, would love to know more! I got an interestinbg link to send you x
Just put a clip up of where Tiles was located in Oxford Street.
Looks like I got it spot on.
