I read this book after seeing this movie and enjoying the characters, but honestly this movie does not do the book justice. If you like this movie you will love the book and the orignal story.

If Mann disowns the film and is the reason it has yet to go digital, then he can go to Hell. I'd sell my balls to get this movie out. The Cloud Molasar sequence (Gloria) is worth the price of the whole film.
@WildBill6942 not sure about that, I think they are adapting a book with the same title by Jennifer Ehrgan (not sure if that's how you spell her last name) but not this film.
@Jess91ism - it was reported by Variety and Hollywood Reporter that Michael Mann's "The Keep" will be remade for a 2012 release. It hasn't gone into production yet so that 2012 date might be pushed back a year. Apparently there are talks with Mann to come back to provide some input into the remake. Stay tuned.
@WildBill6942 ah ok, just did some googling and your story checks out...i'm geussing the adaptation of Ehrgan's book will have to have a different title
It's based on a F. Paul Wilson Book, the first book in the Adversary series. I have to watch the movie to just to see how it stands compared to the book.
My favourite movie from May 1977 on until roughly March 2009 has been Star Wars and the rest of the films. My first experience with the Keep was seeing the softcover novel in this old mall near where I live. Now it is a big mall with a subterranean tunnel built to house an ALRT Transit System. Anyways, the Gothic look grabbed me the most. The rocky walls of the aforementioned. Probably around Spring 2009, I realized that I could watch THE KEEP over and over, more than I felt for Star Wars. Word!
@geigerwarrior Maybe Michael Mann himself is not too proud of it? Don't know why really or why he shouldn't be proud of it. It's not a good movie as it has many flaws but it's one of those movies you do want to see again because it had high potential.
The musical score is correct. There is some differences between the book and the movie. If anyone noticed, simply there is no bad TD soundtrack for any movie. There can be bad movies like the park is mine, or flashpoint, but the music is good and save part of the movie experience. In the other hand risky business and sorcerer are just great. Sorcerer is a masterpiece. Who can deny it?
Dude, you were lucky, I was only 6 in 1983, and I didn't see this movie or even know it existed until I saw it on TV in like 1994. BUt I would have loved to see it in the theaters in 1983, and been able to buy any of the movie memorabilia at the time.
I know that Europe is considered home to some of the Oldest Cultures but I wonder if outside the Druids if such mysterious places with no recorded ties to anyone really do exist. I would love to read a book on them and what the archeologists think they are.
Ok..... well the music seemed really out of place here. I mean, this is supposed to be a creepy, lovecraftian scene, coming across Molosar's lair and all that. instead we get some slightly mysterious upbeat synth. :|
i've done some research lately & here's what i've found: the theatrical version runs 96 minutes & i love it. there is talk of a dvd version (online petition to Paramount) that runs for three hours which apparently explains why it's so different from the book and why the ending seems so abrupt and confusing. who knows - we may see it soon. in the meantime, get any version of the film or soundtrack you can get your hands on, it's brilliant...
@UnkieMuzz If there ever was a film that deserved a directors cut, this is it!!! When you watch the abridged version(because thats what the released version is) you can tell that this was going to be a great movie had it had been presented in the original form Michael Mann intended it to be released in. I despair at the thought we might never get a chance to see the original cut of this, would be classic. A lot of movies these days are dishwater by comparison to the visionary movie making here!!
@UnkieMuzz Well, we have been waiting 2 years, since you posted this. Do you have any idea on what else us fan can do, to try and get this released? I am getting old, and only God knows how much longer I will be here. I so would like to have this on DVD, before I go.
The film focuses on a deserted citadel (the "keep" of the title) in WWII Romania within which lives a dangerous demon named (Radu) Molasar. When the German Wehrmacht occupies the castle to control the Dinu Mountain Pass, the demon is unwittingly unleashed from within the innermost walls of the citadel by a pair of treasure-seeking soldiers and he gratefully albeit ferociously snacks on their life energy.
I saw this on video years ago and thought it was visually stunning. Can't understand why it's hated so much ? I wish they'd put it out on dvd sometime soon.
This has to be one of the most underappreciated movies of all time. It is magical and hypnotic. It is a real shame that I have to live with a 20+ year old VHS copy. Mann and Paramount should just do the world a favor and release it to the public domain. Let someone who cares produce a DVD.
i heard there getting together to release the original 4 hour movie, with all the missing scenes.excellenct movie.dnt think its on dvd yet,bt its in the pipeline.
I totally agree with you; this is a true classic that only a few appreciated and even saw. I rank it as one of the finest movies I have ever seen...from the direction, the scenery right up to the music.
My only complaint is that this clip does not contain the whole "cloud Molosar" scene. Hearing him say "Why are you...here?" is chilling, as is the music for it. Anyone know what that piece of music is called? I think it is the most beautiful piece in the film.
Michael Mann wasn't allowed by paramount to release his true vision!!! so they ended up with a cut down disjointed movie that don't make a lot of sense released straight to video! cool score by the Dream....special edition on dvd might get released one day maybe even uncut!
I loved this movie from the first time I saw it! A special edition on DVD would be great. I really don't find it to be disjointed, Satanic. So, Mann had another version? Interesting. I wish I had it on DVD, dammit.
es una exelente cinta, lastima que fuera presupuestada para 4 horas y se recorto por razones comerciales. Lo mejor de esta cinta es la histoira basada en el exelente libro de f. paul. wilson "la fortaleza".
There is evidently a Bootleg version that has the track score "Brothers In Death" - Does anyone have it and/or know where I can download it. I have the remastered version straight from Amsterdam sounds great! I just need this score because it sounds great to me and I can't seem to find it. I also have another Bootleg copy but it doesn't have this score. Nonetheless, excellent movie all around love my 80's!
excelente pelicula obra maestra de tangerine dream a sido parte de mi desde el primer momento que tuve la fortuna de ver ...saludos desde tijuana mexico..
Wow, talk about "atmospheric" locations; that quarry in Wales is the ultimate. Michael Mann's people found a great location but sadly neglected to expend the same amount of effort in cutting the movie together properly.
I know studio exects justdon't know when to stop messing with films, and just let the director get his version out. I think after MV the studios let Mann get on with his films, as most of his work in the 90's to the present day has been written by Mann with somebody else, or by himself. So it's his project, whereas in his early working days as a director he took any project he could get, and were studio films, so they had high control over the final film. The saddest and funniest aspect to this whole situation is that many if not most of these movie "moguls" don't seem to have ever been film directors themselves. I mean, like, What The Flock? How in Bog's Name can that possibly happen? All I can think is that there's got to be some kind of massive Good Old Boy network in place which allows these nimrods to rise to their own level of incompetence even faster than any other less-connected wannabe in HollywoodLand.
By the way, did you see The Keep when it was first released...I'm only 15, and I love all of Michael Mann's movies, and I'm trying to find this somewhere on video as there is no DVD release. I've only seen the few clips of the movie on YouTube.

That movie was a 90 minutes Tangerine Dream's videoclip. How can be that there are no official OST of The Keep? Sergio
